Application October 8, 1932. Serial No. 636,927 7 1 Claim.
Thev object of my invention is to provide a case adapted to fit over the top of the standard carton used for-holding sweet cakes and crackers and which permits of displaying cakes and 5 crackers similar to that contained in the carton, whereby to give the customer the impression that the carton is full inasmuch as customers will more readily buy if the box appears to be full.
It is also a special object of my invention to provide a case of this character having spaced depending flanges which engage around the upper edge of the carton to hold the tray of the display case on the carton, and to permit transfer of the device from one carton to another.
It is also an object of my invention to provide a hinged lid for the display case to permit of convenient access to the interior of the carton. I obtain these and other objects of my invention by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a top plan view of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of same; the open portion of the lid being shown in dotted lines;
Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the inven' tion; and
Fig. 4 is a section on line 4--4 of Fig. 3.
Like characters of reference designate like parts in each of the several views.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, there is illustrated a standard carton D containing crackers or cakes 4. Removably mounted on this carton is a display tray top B which is hinged at F to a base C. Base 0 is provided with spaced depending flanges 3 and 5 which engage around the upper edge portions of the carton D as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. I provide a suitable strap 8 having an adjusting device or buckle 9 for adjustably supporting the cake or crackers display holder 6 as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. This adjustment is necessary to permit of adjusting the device for this size cakes. I provide a lid G hinged at E to the display tray top B and having a glass or' other transparent pane A mounted therein to permit of excess to the cake or cracker 2 for the display tray top B as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The tray base 6 is provided with a large central opening 11 as shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
In use the depending flanges '3' and 5 of the tray base Care slipped over the upper edge of the carton to secure the display device on the carton. The cakes in the tray 6 are visible to the customer through the glass pane A of the lid G. When the Storekeeper wishes to serve the cus- Small cake makers ship their assorted cakes in metal or cardboard cartons about 10 by 10 inches square. 7 This device fits over the top of this standard carton and makes a fine display case out of the standard carton. When the contents of the carton are sold the carton is replaced with a full one and the old carton is thrown away and this display device is placed on the new carton. This device keeps the top layer of the case always looking fresh and the customers think these have just been opened and will more readily buy the cakes than if he sees a partial empty carton from which the first one or two layers of cakes have been removed. The customer is served from the successive layer of cakes until all have been sold from the carton proper and then the store keeper releases the latch on the display tray lid and tilts it back and the customer is served from thecakes in the top layer until the supply is exhausted. The customer buying the last layer does not see it is the last one but thinks it is the first one.
What 'I claim is: i i
In a display case for cake and crackers, the combination of a base having spaced depending flanges adapted to engage over the upper edge of a standard cake or cracker carton, said base having-a large central opening, a display tray top hingedly mounted on said base, a display tray positioned in a plane above the top of the carton, means for adjustably supporting said tray in said holder from said top, a lid hingedly mounted on the display top, and a transparent pane in said lid.

holder 6 when desired. I provide a suitable latch 7 for the lid G. I also provide a suitable latch
