Description

B. S. MAHAFFEY DISPLAY AND DISPENSING APPARATUS Filed Nov. 1'7. 1 92 AS ffczkaffdy Z ZW f gawd f Patented Get. 15, 1929 PATENT oFFlcE BENJAMIN S. MAHAFFEY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS DISQPLAY AND DISPEN SING APPARATUS Application led November r17, 1925. Serial No. 69,640.
rlhis invention relates to a display and dispensing apparatus for nuts and other food products, and particularly an apparauts which is adapted for displaying peanuts or 5 other nuts, or bags containing same for retail sale in stores.
The object of the invention is to provide a novel and simple display apparatus including containers of suitable vitreous material which is transparent, such as glass or other suitable material which will protect the nuts or the like against deterioration and which will also prevent access thereto by rodents, such as mice, which has heretofore presented a very serious difficulty in keepingsuch products, especially nuts, on hand and display for retail sale or otherwise. The invention embodies a novel means for 'readily dispensing the goods in question and for making provlsion to support the same upon a rotatable or other counter display device, such as a revolv ing display stand for selling salted nuts.
lVith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel comv25 hina-tions and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully specified and pointed out particularly in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings:
F ig. 1 is an elevation of a revolving display stand having a novel display and dispensing device associated therewith.
Fig. 2 is a plan View of the device.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary central vertical sectional view of the display stand.
F ig. l is an enlarged sectional view of the display stand taken on the line l-i of Fig. 1, and F ig. 5 is an enlarged sectional View of one of the vitreous orv glass containers and showing the mounting thereof on a removable slide or plate.
Referring to the drawings in detail, in which like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the display and dispensing apparatus is shown as embodying or associated with a revolving display stand including a base 6, of wood or the like over which a cover section 7, of sheet metal or the like and may be secured as indicated at 8y along the surrounding edges of the base. The base may be provided with a central vertical projection 9, adapted to take a pivot bolt 10, having a nut 11, secured on the lower end thereof and embedded in a recess 12, of the base, to permit the base to set flat on a showcase or other support while retaining the bolt in position. The bolt has a tapered head 13, at its upper end upon which a bearing arm or bracket 14, engages in the recessed bottom base theren of as clearly shown in Figure 3 of the drawings. This bracket is secured as at 15, to a bottom member 16, such as wood, having a central aperture 17, through which the bolt end is extended to retain the revolving part of the stand in position, but permit it to revolve on the bearing as it is thought will be obvious.
The stand in addition to the bottom portion 16, includes a shell of rectangular or other cross section forming an upright stand or body member 18, which may be composed of a series of side plates 19, attached to the members 16, and a top member 20, over which a sheet metal or other top portion 21, is secured Vas indicated at 22. The vertical side edges of the plates 19, are bent in opposite directions toward each other to form guides 23, opposing each other at opposite vertical side edges of the plate or respective sides of the stand, and these may be enveloped by corner sections 24, of angular formation having `their edges turned in around the oppositelydirected portions 23, as indicated at 25, to cover the exposed rough or raw edges of the metal to prevent injury to the hands and also serve to frictionally retain removable cards or display plates 26, preferably of sheet metal, therebeneath. These plates arek adapted to be slid in -at the top edges of the sides beneath such guideways to detachably mount the same on the stand proper and are supported at their lower ends or bottom edges by stops 27, formed in a suitable manner and by turning in the lower ends of the angular corner strips 24;, or by v,suitable lugs or stops formed on the lowerends of the side yplates 19.
In order to mount the packages of food or delicacies, such as salted nuts which may be in bags, usually five or ten cent packages to be disposed as in retail trade, as indicated at 28, suitable vitreous and transparent containers 29, such as glass, or the like are pro! vided. These containers may be suitably mounted upon the plates or sides 19, of the display stand or preferably mounted on the cards or removable side plates 26, which are detachably mounted in the guides and the containers are detachably mounted on the slides or plates 26, so as to be readily removed for removing the contents thereof for sale. or other suitable caps provided for the containers 29, and designated in 30, are mounted upon the .slides of plates 26, and secured thereto in any desired way as by soldering or welding as indicated at 3l, and theV con tainers may have threaded connection with the attaching means or caps 30, as indicated at 82. The cap and container may have an interposed paraflin disk or the like 83, to protect the contents by effectively closing the connection or joint. The containers and mounting means therefor may be arranged in any suitable relations on the slides or plates 26, and as shown in Figures l and 2, ot the drawing are preferably arranged in staggered spaced relation to provide an attractive display of the dispensing appa-1 ratus and also to increase the holding capacity of the device.
In view of the foregoing, it is evident that I have provided a very efficient and easily manipulated display and dispensing appa- ,A
ratus which is especially adapted for dispensing nuts or other foods products, and particularly the former, which will entirely protect the nuts against deterioration due to exposure, but will above all, products and especially nuts from access thereto by rodents, such as rats or mice or other animals or insects that will attack the same. The customer can then be sure of purchasing the nuts in proper condition. It is also to be understood that the glass containers or small jars may be attached to the plates or supports, by other suitable holding means, by means of the caps or jars by strings, rubber bands, steel clasps or otherwise, such as hooks and eyelets, or soldered 'or riveted as described to the stand or display card or plate. It will also be understood that various changes may be made in the arrangement and combination of parts shown and described, and that other materials may be employed without departing from the spirit and scope oit the invention as will be defined by the claims. It may also be apparent that suitable transparent material or containers other than glass may be employed to carry out the objects ot' the invention.V
Having thus" described my invention, what I claim is:
l. In a dispensing and display apparatus of the class described, a revolving stand hav- As shown in the drawing, screw caps protect the foodv ing guides, slides in said guides, closure meni- Ibers secured to the slides and transparent containers removably held in outwardly eX- tending positions by said closure members.
2. A device :tor displaying and dispensing goods of the class described including a rotatable vertically disposed display plate, a screw closure cap secured tothe same at its closed side and having its open portion projecting horizontally outwardly, and a glass container having an externally threaded open end screwed in said cap and detachably supported thereby in a horizontal outstanding position and sealing the interior 'contents of the container.
3. In a dispensing and display apparatus, a rotatable vertically disposed display plate, a screw closure cap secured by its closed end to said plate and having its open end projecting horizontally outward from said plate, and a glass container having an eX- ternally threaded end screwed in said cap and detachably supported thereby in horizontal outstanding position.
e. In a dispensing and display apparatus, a display plate, a screw closure cap secured by its closed end to said plate and having its open end projecting horizontally outward from said plate, and a glass container having 'an externally threaded end screwed in said cap and detachably supported thereby in horizontal outstanding position.- In testimonyv whereof I affix my signature.
