Be it known that I, FRANCIS W. GIBSON, a citizen of the United States, residingat \Vest Roxbury, county of Suffolk, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Display-Racks, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a. display rack and particularly to a rack for exhibiting a line of canistered goods, as for example boxes of crackers or like articles.

-In devices of this sort it is highly desirable to make the display substantially solid in appearance not only as affording a more leasing effect upon the eye than would an interrupted display, but furthermore as being most economical of. space which is a most importantjactor. To the end therefore of providing a display rack in which these desired features are present, I have devised my present. invention, which I will more fully describe in the following specification. As illustrative thereof I have shown in the drawings, which form a part of the specification, a rack which has proved satisfactory from the practical standpoint.

Throughout specification and drawings like reference numerals are employed to indicate corresponding parts, and in the drawings, Figure l is a front elevation of a rack embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, Fig. 3 is a vertical section, Fig. et a detail, partly in section, showing one of my tie and supporting bars, Fig. 5 is a fragmentary detail of side wall and b'asesectioned on the line 55 of Fig. 1, Fig. 6 is a detail of an end of one of the swinging plates, and Fig. 7 is an end view of a swinging plate and bar.

My rack consists of a base 1 preferably of wood supported on cross blocks 2, side members 3 and a top 4-. The sides 3 have their edges-turned as indicated at 3'- in Fig. 5, thus giving a finished edge as well as affording vertical stiffening. The top 4 has down turned end flanges 4, which are riveted to the sides 3 and a front flange 4 which shields the upper-row of canistersand presents a substantially solid display front to the eye. The side walls 3 are transversely connectedbj rods 5 set in groups of three and so positioned as to support a. row of canisters or bones: 6 with their hinged covers 7 outwardly disposed in an inclined position. These covers 7 are usually set with glass to visually expose the contents of the box 6 for the purposes of display.

Hung on the front rod of each group is a swinging plate 8 which covers the gap between the tops of the boxes in one row and the bottom of the row next above.

In lodging the boxes 6 on the shelves defined by the rods 5, the plate 8 swings or yields so that the boxes may drop in place and as the box tops 7 are swung up, the plates 8 also swing as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3 to permit a full opening.

The rods 5 are threaded at their outer ends and ornamental nuts 9 are set up thereon against the sides 3. On the front rods of each group is strung a pipe 10 which acts as an internal brace for the sides 3, and this same bracing may be added to the other rods as may be found desirable. The case is braced on the back by diagonal strips 11 secured at the corners of the walls, top and bottom. The rack is filled with the boxes 6 which are supported on the shelf rods 5, as shown. lVZhen goods are to be removed from the boxes the covers 7 are raised, the plates 8 yielding to permit the rise of the cover. My rack thus affords not only a complete and effective display but also a convenient support for the packaged goods.

Various modifications in the construction and arrangement of the parts of my device may obviously be made all without departing from the spirit of my invention if within the limits of the appended claim.

lVhat I therefore claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A display device comprising a rack, a plurality of hinged cover containers arranged in superimposed spaced rows therein, combined with a yieldingly mounted filling plate filling the space between each row of containers and making therewith a substantially solid front, said filling plates adapted to be swung backward by the covers of the containers as the latter are raised.
