To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM DE LA BARRE, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Covers for Cans and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to removable covers for cans or containers used in dispensing cigars and like articles in retail stores and the like, and has for its object To provide a structural formation and combination of parts and connections whereby the cover or lid can be shifted to an open condition in a ready and convenient manner, while still preserving its attachment to the can body, all as will hereinafter more fully appear.
In the accompanying drawing Fig. 1 is a perspective View of the can and its cover, with the cover shown in a closed condition.
Fig. 2 is central sectional elevation, with the cover shown in an open condition.
Fig. 3 is a detail section on line 3.3. Fig. 2.

In the drawings 1, designates the can or container body, usually of a cylindrical. shape, open at top, and provided with a flat out turned marginal rim or flange 2, as shown.
3, designates the can cover, preferably of a flat disk form, which in the present improvement is formed with a pair of upstanding horns 4, arranged in opposed relation at the margin of the cover, with the inner vertical edges 4 of the horns having a re cessed or concaved form to provide a re taining bearing for the elastic connection now to be described.
5, designates loops of suitable elastic ma terial preferably india rubber, attached to the cover flange 2', aforesaid, by insertion through orifices in said flange, with the ends of each loop attached together underneath said flange, as shown in Fig. 3. the cover can be swung horizontally from over the mouth of the can, or said cover can be tilted vertically to one side of the can mouth as illustrated in Fig. 2.
In the preferred construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a pair of horns 4, with indi vidual loops 5 of elastic material are shown, with both loops in engagement with the horns when the can is not in actual use, and with one or the other loop cast off from its born, when the can is used for dispensing purposes.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An open top can, a cover therefor having a fixed upstanding horn, a vertical edge of which is formed with a holding recess, and a loop of elastic material attached to said can and deflected laterally to engage the holding recess of the horn, said horn having a flat end in angular relation to the plane of the cover and adapted to rest on the upper surface of the can and support the cover in an upright position thereon.
2. An open top can formed with an out turned marginal flange, a cover for the can having a fixed upstanding horn, a vertical edge of which is formed with a holding recess, and a loop of elastic material attached to said can and deflected laterally to engage the holding recess of the horn, said horn having a flat end in angular relation to the plane of the cover and adapted to rest upon the flange of the can and support the cover in an upright position thereon.
3. An open top can, a cover therefor having a pair of marginally opposed fixed horns, a vertical edge of each horn being formed with a holding recess, loops of elastic material attached to said can and deflected laterally to engage the holding recesses of the horns, each of said horns hav ing a flat end in angular relation to the plane of the cover and adapted to rest upon the upper surface of the can and support the cover in an upright position thereon.
4. An open top can formed with an out turned marginal flange, a cover therefor having a pair of marginally opposed fixed horns, a vertical edge of each horn being formed with a holding recess, loops of elastic material attached to said can and defiected laterally to engage the holding recesses of the horns, each of said horns having a flat end in angular relation to the plane of the cover and adapted to rest upon the flange of the can and support the cover in an upright position thereon.
