JOHN RAUHOFER, 0F BETHLEHEM, PENNSYLVANIA..
BOOK CLAMP.
Application filed February 25, 192e.
To all 'who-m t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN RAUr-rornn, va citizen ot the United States, residing at Bethlehem, in the county oi Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Book Clamps, ot which the following is a specitication.
The object of this invention is to provide a clamp especially useful for holding a book on the music rack ot'an organ, piano, or the like, but also useful under all similar conditions.
A further object is to avoid the necessity ot holding the bool; open by the means usually employed, and to provide a device which may remain in position at all times, and may be employed as occasion may require.
A still further object is to provide a pivotally mounted arm with a transparenty plate for direct Contact with the page of the book or music sheet to be held, so that there may be no interference with the reading of the words or music.
1With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of elements disclosed, it being understood that modifications may be made within the scope ot' the claim without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanyingl drawings,
Figure 1 shows the device in front eleva tion. f
Figure 2 is a top plan view.
Figure 3 is an edge view or side elevation. Figure 4 shows the clamping arm in side elevation, and the devices connected therewith in section.
Figures 5, G and 7 are detail views, Figure G being a section on line 6 6 of Figure 1.
The base or rack 10 has a lower ledge or outstanding` element 11, formed at the central portion as shown at 12 for accommodating the devices mounting the clamping arm. This arm 14,- is connected by pivot 15 with a short arm or stud 16, the latter having a reduced threaded end 17 and serving to mount a glass or other transparent plate 18 shown as being of circular form and adapted Serial No. 695,106.
to engage a music sheet, or the open page ot' a book, from which the musician desires to play. Threaded end 17 is engaged by a nut 19, and the glass permits of the reading ot practically all portions ot the page, while the book is suitably held without the use of other means Arm 14tincludes a lower enlarged portion 20 having an annular channel 21 and an opening 22 accommodates a small bolt or screw 23 passing through the enlarged end oi the arm and through the ears or 'forked portion 2li ot screw 9.5. This screw has an outer bore 26 and a small inner bore 2T both extending longitudinally. Spring 21 in channel 21 is in t'rictional engagement with one of the ears.
Screw 25 is threaded into a sleeve 28 mounted as shown with reference to the central portion of ledge 11, and this sleeve or bushing is engaged by screw 29 passing throughl the base 10, and the screw includes a stem 30 entering the small bore oi screw 25. Spring 30 encircles stem 29 and is housed within the larger bore ot the screw, the spring providing rictional engagement at 31.
It willbe observed that the arm 14 is movable outwardly from base or rack 10, and is also movable to the right and left, about the longitudinal anis of sleeve 28, and is retained by the spring in an adjusted position. y
What I claim is:
In a device of the class described, a sup porting element, an arm pivoted thereon and movable toward and away from said element, rotatable means :for mounting the pivoted arm, and devices for retaining an adjusted position of the rotatable means and ot the am connected with the rotatable means, the device for retaining the rotatable means including a coiled spring pressing on said means, a tubular element receiving the rotatable element and spring, and a screw retaining the tubular element and imparting end thrust to the spring for forcing it against the rotatable means.
In testimony whereof I aiiixiny signature.
JOHN RAUHOFER.
