COVER OPENING AND CLOSING MECHANISM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 17, 1920.
Application filed January 9, 1919. Serial No. 270,357.
To all whom z't may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS CHnIsKos, a subject of the King of Greece, residing at Muskegon, in the county of Muskegon and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cover Opening and Closing Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention has reference to covers or lids for cabinets, writing desks and the like; and its object is to provide improved means for opening and closing suchcovers.
This object is attained by, and the invention finds preferable embodiment in, the Structure hereinafter described and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an end view of a cabinet or desk, the casing whereof has been partially broken away to disclose operative parts;
Fig. 2 is a like view of the opposite end of the same;
Fig. 8 is a rear view of the casing being broken away; and
Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the same taken on a plane corresponding to line A-A of Fig. 3.
In the embodiment of the invention chosen for illustration by the drawings and for detailed description in the body of this specification, a cabinet 1 is shown, suitable for phonographs and the like. The chamber 2 (wherein may be mounted a phonograph, for instance) is inclosed by a mov able cover 3, shown in closed position in Fig. 4. This known forms or types, as a flexible curtain, traveling in grooves or guides 4: in the ends of the cabinet as shown. This cover is moved by a swingable arm 5 connected therewith, which arm is swung by reciprocative means, the manually-operated slide 6, through suitable mechanical connections. These connections may be of various kinds, and in the embodiment of the invent-ion illustrated such connections are as follows:
The arm 5 is pivotally mounted on the cabinet at 7 and is connected to the rear of the cover as by the rod or pin 8. The arm has a gear 9, concentric with its pivotal mounting, with which gear meshes a second gear 10 pivotally mounted on the cabinet,
of the same, a part cover may be of various welland having a third gear 11 concentric and movable fixedly therewith. A toothed seg ment 12 pivotally mounted at 13 on the cabinet meshes with the third gear 11. The reciprocative means or slide 6 having a manually-operating portion 15 extending outside the cabinet is connected to a lever 16 which is connected to the segment by link 17. Then the slide 6 is pushed down by pressure on the portion 15, the segment is turned 011 its pivot, the gears are rotated and the arm 5 is swung to move the cover to its open position.
To close the cover, a similar second reciprocative means or slide 14 may be pushed down, whereby the lever 18 fulcru'med at 19 is turned, swinging in turn by the link 30 the lever 20 fulcrumed at 21 in the back of the cabinet and connected by the link 31 to the lever 23 fulcrumed at 24: and whose V opposite end is connected at 25 to the slide This movement of the slide 1 1 causes the segment to turn in the opposite direction, thus closing the cover. Suitable springs 26 and 2'? may be employed to counterbalance the weight of the moving parts.
It will be seen that the cover is not hing edly mounted, but is displaced as a totality in opening and closing z'.. c. the cover is movable bodily.
The invention being intended to be pointed out in the claim, is not to be limited to or by details of construction shown or described.
I claim: Y
In a structure of the character described; a cover movable bodily; a pivotally mount ed arm connected to the cover to move the same and having a gear; a second gear meshing with said gear; a third gear concentric with the second gear and rotatable therewith; a pivotally mounted toothed segment meshing with the third gear; reciprocative means; connections between said means and the segment for pivotally moving the segment by said means.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand at Grand Rapids, Michigan, this 7th day of January, 1919.
LOUIS CHRISKOS. Witnesses:
JOHN FRAGOIS, JULIA C. OLSEN.
