BELT BUCKLE.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I. MARY S'rAnMnu, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newport News. in the county of lV-arwick and State of Virginia, have invented certain new 7 and useful Improven'lents in Belt Buckles, of which the following .is a specification.

The belt buckle of my present invention is designed as an accessory or a part of wearing apparel for use with waist belts for either men or women, which device may be manipulated with facility, is effective in performing various functions, and presents a neat appearance when in use by the wearer. In combination with the buckle of my invention I also utilize means adapted to accommodate th chain-bar of a watch chain. and for suspending looped vest chains as will hereinafter be described.

The invention consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of parts whereby the belt may with facility be ad justed to the required length and its ends securely retained in adjusted position and whereby the belt may be connected or disconnected with convenience. and when connected will be securely retained in such position.

Iii-the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention wherein the parts are combined and arranged in accord ance with the best mode I have thus far dovised for the practical application of the principles of my invention.

The belt of which the two ends 1 and 2 are shown in the drawing may he of suit-able material and of the standard sizes customarily used for either men or women, and the ends are connected by the buckle of my invention to present an exterior appearance Serial No. 708,691.

The buckle which is preferably stamped from suitable material by machinery adapted for the purpose comprises a plate 3 which is here shown as rectangular in shape, but it will be understood that the plate may be embodied in other shapes, and may he ornamented to suit the taste of the wearer.

At the inner side of the plate 8 and along the top and bottom edges thereof are fashioned angular flanges l and 5 for the purpose of reinforcing the plate and affording a housing, open at the rear, for the connecting parts of the belt ends.

Near one end of the buckle plate a back plate 6 is fashioned at right angles to the flange 5 with which it is integral, and parallel with th buckle plate 3. The back plate is provided with a slit or slot 7 extending longitudinally of the buckle and terminating near one edge of the back plate in order that an upright extension or post 8 may be provided.

An upper portion of the back plate 6 is fashioned as a resilient tongue 9 extending horizontally. in which a vertical groove or socket member 10 is fashioned for a purpose to be described.

As best seen in Figure 4% the flanges land 5 of th buckle plate. at complementary ends. are provided with vertically alined. short pins 11. 11 bent downwardly andupwardly from the respective flanges 4 and The lower flange 5, has a flat upright bar 12 extending upwardly therefrom. and it' will be apparent that this flat bar. the back plate 6 and its post 8 together with the edges of the flanges 4 and 5. afford means for bearing against the clothing of'the wearer andholding the buckle in proper position when worn.

13 and 13 which. together with the bar provide means whereby a watch chain or other chain may be looped around the bar as in dottedlines Figure 2 for supporting the chain. A chain is also indicated in dotted lines as looped around the back plate 6. and in 4,- a. third form of loop is indicated in dotted lines in which the chain is looped around the notched flange 5 and ertends outwardly through the buckle between its front plate and back plate. A chain bar may also he used for anchoring the chain to the buckle by laying the bar on the flange 5 between the front plate 3 and the bar 12 and back plate 6, with the chain hanging through the notch 13. In the lower flange 5 an opening 5 is also provided through which a watch chain may be passed, or a chain for supporting other article of wear may be passed through this opening, the perforated flange thus forming a means of attaching or suspending the chain.

One end of the belt. as 1 is anchored to the buckle by means of the plate 142 that is fashioned with upper and lower sleeves- 15 secured on the complementary pins 11 of the buckle with a pivotal connection, the body of the plate extending inwardly of the buckle. The anchoring plate is provided with a resilient tongue 16 struck therefrom by suitable tools, over which tongue the belt end which is provided wi h an eye 17, is caught as best seen in Figure 3.

Between the two hinge sleeves 15 of the anchoring plate are located gripping test 18 which form a jaw disposed at right angles to the body of the plate, and it will be seen in Figure 3 that these teeth of the gripping jaw which hold the belt against the inner face of the buckle plate and the tongue 16 which projects through the eye 17 of the belt, afford a rigid and secure anchorage for one end of the belt in its attachment to the buckle.

The other end 2 of the belt is provided with a loop 19 and an adjusting buckle. which latter comprises a rectangular wire frame 20 through which the belt is passed and its extremity looped inside the adjusting loop 19. The frame 20 is fashioned with a horizontal tongue 21 which is resilient and adapted to pass through an eye in the belt end for anchoring the latter.

The adjusting buckle is provided with a front lever plate 23 fashioned with hinge sleeves 24 on th frame 20, and gripping teeth 25 disposed at the proper angle to the lever plate are designed to grip the exterior face of the belt as in Figure 3. Thus the pull on the belt tends to lock the looped end in the adjusting buckle through the action of the lever plate 23 and the gripping jaws or teeth 25. but the length of the belt may quickly be adjusted. by loosening the adjusting buckle and lengthening or shortening the loop 19.

An eye 20 is fashioned integral with the frame 20 for accommodating a short chain which may be attached thereto for suspending articles that may be worn by the wearer of the belt.

At the end of the loop 19 is carried the connection for the buckle, said connection comprising a rectangular wire frame 26 through which the looped end of the belt is passed, and a rectangular loop 27. As shown in the drawings the loop is of the proper size and shape to be slipped over the resilient tongue or hook 9 of the buckle and is designed to fit snugly in the socket member 10 of the tongue to prevent displacement. The loop 26 fits in back of the buckle plate be tween the upper and lower flanges 4 and 5 and is retained at the side of the back plate, with one bar of the loop 27 below and an other bar above the resilient tongue or hook 9.

The operating parts of both the belt buckle and the adjusting buckleare concealed from view and afford means whereby adjustments may readily be made as well as providing means whereby the belt buckle may be connected or disconnected with facility and convenience.

The belt buckle and the adjusting buckle may with facility be detached from one belt and attached to another belt when desired,

thus adaptingthem for use with different dresses or different suitsof clothes.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. The combination with a belt buckle having upper and lower flanges and alined integral pins thereon, of an anchoring plate pivoted on said pins and fashioned with an angular-1y disposed gripping jaw, and a resilient tongue in said plate adapted to receive the slotted end of a belt.

2. The combination of a belt buckle having upper and lower flanges and a back plate provided with a slit forming an upper longitudinally extending portion and a resilient tongue at the end of said portion, and an integral resilient hook member on said portion extended toward the front of the buckle and forming a socket adapted to receive the loop of a belt-connection.

3. The combination with a belt buckle having upper and lower flai'iges, of a back plate provided with a slit to form an upper extension-bar, an integral resilient hook member on said back plate extended toward the front plate and fashioned with a socketgroove adapted to receive the loop of a beltconnection, and an angular upright member on the lower flange co-acting with the flanges and said back plate to provide a support for the buckle.

4. The combination of a belt buckle having a lower perforated flange and spaced notches therein, an angular upright bar located between said notches, a back plate for the buckle provided with ahorizontally extending slit to form an upper extension-bar, and an integral resilient hook member on said back plate.
