To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES E. STURGrs, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Belt Hooks, of which the following is a spec1- fication.

The present invention relates to belt hooks, and an object thereof is to provide a construction which may be readily attached to a waist belt to provide a hook ,from which key ring chains and other devices may be securely suspended. A further object of this invention is to provide a compact structure which will be ornamental in appearance and, at the same time, inconspicuous.

To these and other ends, the invention bonsists of certain parts and combinations lof parts all of which will be hereinafter described, the novel features being pointed lout in the appended claims.

Referring more particularly to the drawgings, 1 indicates the fragment of a belt in which the belt hook is shown arranged. The belt hook embodies a front member 2 which may have its front surface ornamented in any suitable manner as, for instance, by an engraved letter 3. Through the upper bend or connecting portion 4, a rear member 5 connects with the front member 2 to lie on the inner side or face of the belt 1. This rear member may be of less width than the front member and may have along opposite edges slightly inwardlyrvr turned portions 6 which are adapted to provide two parallel edges to frictionally engage the rear face of the belt. The front and the rear member with their connecting portions form a slide adapted to be fitted to a waist belt.

The front member 2 carries a limiting device for limiting the rearward movement ,-9 on the limiting bar 7. This forwardly projecting loop 11 with the limiting bar serves to limit the rearward movement of the member 5 with reference to the front member 2. The lower arm of this loop 11 also serves for supporting the hook 12 which projects forwardly from the rear end of the lower arm of said loop, thence forwardly and rearwardly, the upper forward end being carried above the lower end of the front member and above the upper end of the slot or opening 10.

With the end in view of preventing the device, such as a chain 13, which is suspende-d from the hook 12, from' being accidentally removed from such hook, a guard may be employed. In this instance, this guard is in the form of .a tongue 14 cut from the metal of the front piece to provide the opening 10, and extended downwardly from the upper end of said opening below the upper end of the vhook and in rear of said hook, its lower end being carried below the loop 11 in close proximity to the front arm of the hook 12, the extreme end of the tongue 14 being bent rearwardly and upwardly at 15 so as to lie in close proximity to the lower arm of the loop 11. y

In fitting a device 13 to the hook 12, the

device is passed over the upper end of the hook between the latter and the guard 14 passingV downwardly until such device passes below the lower end of the' guard to bereceivedby the lower hook 12. The front arm of the hook 12 yields outwardly and owing to the fact that this hook 12 is connected by the loop 11 with the rear member 5 of the device, the hook 12 utilizes the rear member 5 to give resiliency to such hook, due to the A lua fact, that loose bearing is obtained on the limiting member 7 rllhe guard prevents the device 13 passing from the hook l2 and its upwardly and rearwardly deflected end tends to direct the device 13 away from the passageway between the forward arm of the hook and guard 14.

F rom the foregoing it will be seen that there has been provided a compact belt hook which closely hugs the belt and has a hook portion which utilizes the rear member of the belt engaging body or slide to give resiliency thereto. A limiting or bearing member is provided which cooperates with a loop between the hook portion and the rear member of the belt slide or body to hold the front and rear member of the belt slide or body together. This loop portion projects into a slot between two rearwardly projecting sleeves on the lower part of the front member, and a guard extends over said slot in rear of the forward arm of the hook to prevent the accidental removal of the suspending device, this guard having its lower end so formed as to direct the suspending device away from the passageway between the guard and the hook.

TWhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent isz- 1. A belt slide formed from sheet metal and comprising a front member, a rear member connected at its upper end to the front member, a hook carried by the rear member and having a portion extending forwardly and upwardly in front of the front member and above the lower end of such front. member, and a connection between the lower end of the front member and the rear member at a point between the rear member and the hook, said connection permitting the hook and rear member to move forwardly relatively to the front member.

2. A device of the class described comprising a front member, a rear member connected at its upper end to the upper end of the front member, spaced sleeves carried by the lower end of the front member, a limiting device arranged within said sleeves, a portion carried by the rear member and oxtending in front of said limiting device, and a hoolr member having its free end extending in front of the device.

3. A device of the class described comprising a front member, a rear member, a forwardly projecting loop arranged at the lower end of the rear member having its upper arm connected to the rear member, a hoolr connected to the lower end of the loop and having its free end extending forwardly and upwardly, and a limiting bar cooperating with the rear face of the loop and carried by the front member.

A device of the class described comprising a front member provided with a slot near its lower end, a rear member resiliently connected at its upper end to the front member, a forwardly projecting loop at the lower end of the rear member movable in said slot, said loop having its upward arm connected to the rear member, a hook connecting to the lower arm of the loop and projecting forwardly and upwardly in front of the slot.

A device of the class described comprising a front member provided with a slot near its lower end and sleeves projected rearwardly from its lower end on opposite sides of the slot, a rear member, a limiting bar received within said sleeves, a portion carried by the rear member and lying in front of said bar, and a hook carried by said portion and extending forwardly and upwardly in front of the slot of the front member.

Adevice of the class described coniprising a front member, a limiting bar carried by the lower end of the front member, a rear member connected at its top to the front member, a portion carried by the rear member and lying in front of said limiting bar, and a hook portion carried by said portion and extendingr forwardly and upwardly.

7. A device of the class described comprising a front member, a rear member resiliently connected at its upper end to the upper end of the front member, a hooked portion carried at the lower end of the rear member and projecting forwardly and upwardly in front of the front member and above the lower end of the latter, means connecting the lower end of the front member with the rear member at a point between the latter and the hooked portion, and a guard extending from the front member at a point above the lower end thereof, downwardly in rear of the upwardly projecting portion ofthe hook.

8. A device of the class ydescribed comprising a front vmember having a slot near its lower end, a rear member connected at its upper end to the upper end of the front member, a loop portion at the lower end of the rear member opposite said slot in the front member, a hook portion carried from the lower arm of said loop portion and projecting forwardly and upwardly in front of the slot of the front member, and a guard extending from the front member above the slot downwardly in rear of the upwardly projecting portion of the hook and having an end turned rearwardly and upwardly to cooperate with the lower arm Vof the loop.

9. A device of the class described comprising a front member, a rear member connected at its upper end to the front member, a loop' at the lower end of the rear member having one arm connected to the latter, a hook portion connected to the lower arm of the loop and extending forwardly and upwardly in front of the front member, and a guard extending downwardly from the front member in rear of the hook and having its lower end deflected upwardly and rearwardly to cooperate with the lower arm of the loop.

A device of the class described comprising a front member, a rear member resiliently connected at its upper end to the front member, a hook carried by the rear member and extending forwardly and upwardly in front of the front member and the lower end of the front member, a connection between the latter and the book permitting the hook to move forwardly relatively to the front member, and a guard L extending from the front member downwardly in rear of the hook and having its end turned rearwardly and upwardly.

A device of the class described comprising a front member, a rear member con` nected at its upper end to the front member, a forwardly projecting loop having its upper arm connected to the lower part of the rear member, a book connected to the lower armof said loop and projecting up'- Wardly in front of the front member, and limiting means carried by said front member and arranged to engage the rear face of said loop. 12. A device of the class described comprising a front member, a rear member connected at its upper end to the front member, a forwardly projecting loop having its upper arm connected to the lower part of the rear member, a hook connected to the lower Y arm of said loop and projecting upwardly in front of the front member, and a guard extending downwardly from the front member at a point below the upper end of the hook and in rear of such end, the lower end of said guard being turned upwardly and rearwardly to cooperate with the lower arm of the loop.
