Description
H. GEHMAN BELT BUCKLE Dec. 15, 1931 Filed NOV. 6, 1930 v INVENTOR ffarrg/ G'e/vnazr W ATTORNEYS Patented Dec. 15, 1931 UNITED STATES HARRY GEHMAN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA BELT BUCKLE Application filed November 6, 1930. Serial No. 493,854.
This invention relates to belt buckles and, among other objects, aims to provide an ornamental buckle which may be used with almost any type of belt and which presents a very neat appearance without tending to deform the belt. The invention also provides means for preventing the belt from riding upwardly over the top of the trousers supported by the belt.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and showing a preferred embodiment of the invention:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a portion of belt shown with the improved buckle;
Fig. 2 is a bottom plane view of the same;
Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the same; and
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view through the buckle shown apart from the belt.
The improved buckle comprises a generally rectangular body preferably slightly curved to conform with the curvature of the body having a cross bar 5 preferably integral therewith. As shown, the cross bar is spaced midwa of the ends of the belt buckle and is somew iat offset with respect to the general plane of the buckle so as to permit passing the belt between the cross bar and the buckle without causing the belt to bulge materially beyond the outside face of the buckle. Attached to the cross bar 5 is one end of a belt 6 which is preferably held by means of a loop 7, the end of which may be secured to the belt by means of an ordinary snap fasrlfi tener 8.
At one end of the buckle, a hook-like member 9 is provided, said hook member being preferably integral with the buckle and having its point extending in the general direction of the cross bar. The hook 9 is designed to engage one of a series of perforations 10 provided in the other end of the belt. The hook is an inwardly projecting hook but as its point is directed toward the cross bar, and does not extend appreciably beyond the ably integral with and projecting at right angles to the cross bar 5. The fixed arm 11 is sufficiently offset with respect to the buckle to be entirely clear of the belt, as shown in Fig. 2. When the belt is being worn, the arm 11 engages under the top button of the trousers and thus prevents the belt from riding up.
The described belt buckle may be manufactured economically and presents a very neat appearance. It differs from buckles now widely in use, particularly in the elimination of the movable tongue which tends to make the belt have a shabby appearance after a few months of wear and unlike belt buckles now in use provides means positively to prevent upward movement of the belt relative to the trousers, thus exposing the top button and the shirt of the wearer. The buckle also presents a more pleasing appearance than other buckles'now in use as there is no movable part which loses its enamel by constant rubbin against the belt. Only the outer surface 0 the belt buckle is visible and this surface may be made highly ornamental and will maintain its original appearance for a long period of time.
Obviously, the present invention is not restricted to the particular embodiment thereof herein shown and described.
What I claim is A belt buckle having a substantially rectangular body; a cross bar integral with the body and spaced from the general plane of the body so that a belt may be passed between 8! the cross bar and the body; an arm integral with the cross bar and extending at right angles thereto andgenerally parallel to the body but offset therefrom so that the principal length of the arm is spaced further from the body of the buckle than the cross bar; and a hook-like member integral with the body at one end and on the same side as the cross bar and arm and having its extremity pointed substantially in the same direction as the arm. n
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my 0WI1,'I have hereto afiixed my signature.
HARRY GEHMAN.
