Be it lrnown that l, CARL CHRISTIAN Pr.- YrensoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chester, in the county of Delaware and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Carnient-Clasps, of 'which the following is a specication.

This invention relates to garment clasps of that general class shown and described in my copending application filed in the United States Patent Gihcc on the 10th day of January, 1919, under Serial No. 270,531, and of which the present application is a division.

The object of the invention is to provide a clasp of simple and durable construction apable of being readily attached to a sus- )eiision element and which will efiectually rip a stocking or other garment to be supported without liability of tearing or otherwise injuring the fabric.

The improved clasp forming the subject matter of the present invention is shown by way of illustration in connection with a hose supporter in which 5 designates the elastic supporting band, 6 the suspension element or pad and 7 the interengaging fastening devices for securing the ends of the supporting band in assembled position.

Depending from the lower end of the suspension element G is a plate 8 which constitutes one element of the garment engaging clasp, the other element of the clasp being in the form of a bail 9 the upper end of which is pivotally mounted in a suitable eye or loop 10 arrangedon the outer face of the plate 8 as best shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. T he upper end of the plate 8 is provided with an opening 10 through which eX- tenos the reduced end of the suspension element or pad G, the pad being secured to the plate 8 by stitching or otherwise, as desired. Projecting laterally from the outer face of the plate 8 is an enlargement 11 having its peripheral edge formed with a concave seating groove 12 adapted to receive the material of which the garment is formed when the clamping member or bail 9 is swung downwardly to lowered position. The lower end of enlargement or projection 11 is preferably curved or rounded while the free end f the clamping bail 9 is correspondingly curved or rounded so as to conform to and lit within the seating groove 12. The plate 8 at the lower or curved portion of the projection 11 is preferably cut-away at 13 in order to lighten the same and arranged directly above the cut-away portion is a transverse reinforcing web 14 which connects the adjacent side walls of the projection 11 and serves to prevent spreading of the walls thereof. Arranged at the rear of the plate 8 is a backing strip 15 so as to prevent the clasp from coming in direct .contact with the leg of the wearer when said clasp is used in connection with a hose supporter. The plate 8 is formed lwith a 'plurality of laterally extending attaching eyes 16 and the backing 15 is preferably secured to the plate by stitching the eyes 16 thereto as best shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. Projecting longitudinally from the free end of the clamping bail 9 is a finger piece 17 by means of which the bail may be conveniently released from engagement with a garment when it is desired to detach the clasp therefrom.

It will thus be seen that by positioning the upper Vedge of a garment over the project'ion ll and swinging the free endof the clamping bail V9 downwardly, the material atthe upper edge of the garment will be forced within the seating groove l2 and in which position it will be securely clamped by engagement with the bail 9, which as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings also enters the seating groove l2. A clasp constructed in accordance with the present invention. will effectually grip the .upper edge of a hose or other garmentI so that the same may be conveniently supportedV from a suspension element, without liability of tearing, fraying or otherwise injuring the fabric of which the garment is formed. 7While the clasp is shown yand described in connection with a hose supporter it will, of course, be understood that said clasp may be used with equally good results for any other purpose for Iwhich it may be found desirable or applicable. It will furthermore be understood that the claspsniay be made in different sizes and shapes and nickeled or otherwise coated or ornamented to give the same a neat attractive appearance.

i .Having thus described the invention, what isolaimed as new is:

l. A device of the class described including a suspension element, a plate depending from the suspension element .and provided with a plurality of attaching eyes extending laterally from the marginal edge thereof, said plate being formed on one side thereofV witha hollow projection Provided with a circumferential seating groove, i backing strip, stitching passing through the attaching eyes of the plate and engaging the backing strip, and a clamping bail pivotally mounted on the plate and having its free end formed with a continuous unbroken loop adapted when swunginwardly to force the material. of a garment within said seating groove at the sides and Vend of the projection.

A device of the class described including a suspension element, a plate depending from the suspension element and pirovided with a hollow lateral projection, the marginal wall of Vwhich, is formed with a continuous concave seating groove, a reinforcing web extending transversely of theV projection at the upper end thereof and spaced inwardly from the outer edge of said projection, and a clamping bail pivotally mounted on the plate above theV projection and movable into engagement with a garment for clamping the latter within the groove and against the outer edge of the projection at the sides and end of said projection.

A garment engaging clasp including 90 a plate having its lower end curved and its upper end provided with means for attachment to a suspension element, a hollowpro- Y jection extending laterally from one side of the plate and conforming to the curved lower end thereof, the marginal edge of said projection being concavo-convex in cross section t'o form a circumferential seating groove, a transverse reinforcing web connecting the convex walls of the projection and spaced upwardly from the curved end thereof and inwardly from the outer edge of said projection, said plate being provided with a transverse eye fitting within the upper portion of the groove of said projection, and a bail pivotally mounted in said eye and havingits lower end portion provided with a finger piece, said bail coacting with the groove in the projection for clamping a garment against the outer edge of 'the 110 `projection' and within the groove thereof when the bail is swung inwardly to operative position.
