Description

UNITED STATE$ PATENT OFFICE.
NEwToN D. HARDING ANDsTEPEEN w. COLV1N,OF LAPORTE CITY, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BAG-TIES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [55,302, dated S ptember 22, 1874; application-filed April 9, 1874.
To all whom it may co'ncm'n:
Be it known that we, NEwToN D. HARD- TNG- and STEPHEN WV. COLVIN, of Laporte City, in the county of Black Hawk and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Ties; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of our invention consists in the construction of a bag-tie composed of a short strip of leather with a string fastened at each end, and with beveled rubber blocks riveted at or near the center, one on each side of the strap, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and which represents a perspective view of our bag-tie.
b represents a short strap or strip of leather of suitable dimensions, provided at one end with a string, a, which is to be permanently fastened to the bag. At the other end the strip A is provided with a tie-string, a, as
shown. (I d represent two rubber blocks fastened on opposite sides at or near the center of the strap 1) by a single rivet, e, passing through both blocks and the leather strip. The edges of the rubber blocks d d are beveled inward, as shown, to facilitate the passage of the tiestring between the leather and either of said blocks.
After the bag is filled and ready to be tied, the leather strip 12 and tie-string a, are wrapped around the bag tightly, and the string passed under the rubber block, which is on the outside. This string is then held tightly by the pressure of the rubber upon it.
When desired, the string can be easily taken out and the bag opened.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isv v The combination of the leather strip 1), strings a a, and the bevel-edged rubber blocks (1 d fastened to the strip by the rivet 6, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
NEWTON D. HARDING. STEPHEN W. OOLVIN.
