ilnrrno drnrns EMORY Q. DARE, OF SHELBYVILLE, INDIANA.
SW EAT= PAD FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 378,239, dated February 21, 1888.
Serial No. 247,193. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EMORY Q. DARK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shelbyville, in the county of Shelby and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sweat-Pads; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a sweat-pad and an improved device for securing it to a horsecollar, the leading object and purpose of the invention being to construct the padfastening in a novel and peculiar manner; and it consists in the construction and combination of parts, substantially as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the sweat-pad in the position that it ocou pics when on the horses neck. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective of the pad when extended for the purpose of reversing. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of pad and collar, showing the mode of connecting them by my improved clamp. Figs. 4 and 5 are enlarged perspective and side views, respectively, of my improved clamps or fastenings.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures.
A denotes a sweat-pad constructed of any suitable size and in any desired manner. Preferably it consists of a single strip or length adapted to encircle the horses neck.
At suit-able points opposite each other along the inner edge of the pad are located the fastenings by means of which the pad is held in place against the collar. Thus it will be seen that each half of the pad-that is, the portion on each side of the horses neck-is provided with a fastening, and their location as regards the meeting extremities of the pad may be varied as the judgment of the man who constructs them may dictate; but it will usually be found best to have them, as regards each other, oppositely located. lhe mode of their connection to the pad is as follows: A
strip of leather, a, arranged to pass from a point on one side of the pad near its inner edge to an opposite point on the other side of the pad, thus encompassing the edge more or less closely, said edge being usually preferably more or less thickened, as shown, by reason of the stuffing of the pad, is firmly riveted or otherwise fastened in this position. The clamp or fastening is adapted to slide upon the strap a from one end thereof to the other, and thus to be changed in position from one side of the pad to the other. Said clamp consists of a strap of spring metal, B, bent to form two curved spring clamping-jaws, and provided with a loop, I), cent-rally between the jaws which inclose the strap a. (See Fig. 4:.)
When the pad is to be attached to the collar,
.it will first be laid upon the horses neck, then the collar placed in position, and afterward the clamps B B sprung over the neck-roll of the collar, as shown in Fig. 8. It will thus be seen that my pad is easily reversible, so that either side thereof may be presented to the horses neck. In warm weather a reversible pad of this kind is especially desirable, for experience has demonstrated that during a days use a pad becomes so saturated with sweat as not to dry during the night.
WVhen the pad is reversible, the dry side can be presented to the horses neck and the saturated side be afforded additional time to dry during the following day.
I am aware that a reversible sweat-pad has heretofore been used with a horse-collar, and I do not, therefore, claim such reversible pad as broadly new with me; but what I do claim in connection therewith will hereinafter specifically appear in the claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with pad A, of straps (t a, encompassing the inner edge and secured on opposite sides of said pad, and clamps B B, having loops b b, that slide on said straps a a, substantially as and for the purpose specifled.
In testimony whereof I afix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EMORY Q. DARE.
