BERTHA CRAWFORD SMITH, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
GARMENT.
Application filed September 25, 1922. 7 Serial No. 590,422.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BERTHA CRAWFORD SMITH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of San Francisco, county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented a new and useful Garment, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in garments and has particular reference to a garment commonly known as overalls. A particular object of the invention is to provide a garment of the character described that will be particularly simple in construction, that has as few buttons as can possibly be employed for fastening the same and is provided with removable buttons that may be taken out of the garment when the latter is to be washed so that the same may be wrung through a wringer and passed through a mangle flattened, thus leaving the wringer uninjured and rendering the ironing of the garment unnecessary. Further objects and advantages of my garment will appear as the specification proceeds.
The preferred form of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 shows a front view ofthe overalls, Figure 2 a rear view of the same, Figure 3 an enlarged detail view of the rear neck portion of the garment with the button for fastening the same removed and Figure 4: a central section through one of the buttons. While I have shown only the preferred form of the invention it should be understood that various changes or modifications may be made within the scope of the claim hereto attached without departing from the s irit of the invention.
My garment 1) may be made of any suitable material and is enerally constructed along lines similar to the overalls now com monly used. It comprises a tubular body portion (2) from which extend downwardly two sleeves (8) adapted to receive the legs of the person using the garment and two lateral sleeves 1-) adapted to receive his arms. The tubular body portion opens in the back as shown at (5) along a vertical line disposed centrally relative to the body and the lower rear portion of the body is provided with a flap connecting with the material along a horizontal line. The upper margin (7) of the flap is out to rise centerWise from both ends and is provided with a trimming (8) made of a comparatively narrow strip of material of a color preferably different from that of the main material. This trimming is preferably continued around the front portion of the garment in symmetrical arrangement as shown at (9) as to form a waist line around the entire body. Suitable trimmings of the same material are provided around the neck as shown at (11) and at the end of each sleeve as shown at (12). Folds (10) in the lateral portions of the flaps to give a certain amount of fullness to the same for covering the placket region. A front pocket is p(r0i3ided on the righthand side as shown at 14 It will be seen from the drawing that only four buttons are necessary to fasten the garment. The buttons are removable and the construction of one of the same is shown in Figure at. It comprises two members one of which (16) resembles a collar button and is adapted to be inserted into the garment through a perforation (17). Its head (18) is adapted to be pushed between the legs of the U-shaped spring (19) disposed centrally and slidably in the button (21) which latter is considerably larger than the base (22) of the collar button. After the head (18) is forced into the U-shaped spring (19) the latter may be pressed downwardly by the cap (20) into the bottom opening of the button (21) whereby its legs are pressed together so as to confine the head of the collar button. To remove the button it is only necessary to pull the central spring member (19) upward which allows the legs of the same to spread and to thereby release the head of the collar button. It should be understood that this removable button is well known in the art and n0 invention is claimed on the same except on its use in this particular combination.
Four buttons are all that are necessary to fasten the garment, two buttons (23) and (24) being used to fasten the garment along the vertical line and two more buttons (26) and (27) being provided at the upper corners of the flap for securing the latter. The lower button (24) is also used to engage the rising central portion of the flap for securing the same. The neck may be made round as shown in the drawing or square.
I claim A bifurcated union garment comprising an upper portion having sleeves and a band and (13) are provided disposed immediately oe'neath the sleeves and con'lperatively long lower portion the upper portion having a vertical opening in the back extending from the neek to the band with a single bu ton at the neck and a single button at the bend fastening the edges of the material together, a flap inthe rear of the lower portion overlapping the vertical 'opening having fasteners at opp0- site ends for securing the same to the upper portion and having upper edges tapering upwarcl'towarcl the center for engagement with the band button 01'': the upper portion.
