Description

Au 25, "1925. V 1,551,059
' M. SCHNELLBACHER SWEATER Filed Nov. 9, 1925 IN VEN TOR Patented Aug. 25, 1925.
UNITED STATES MARTIN SCI-INELLCBACHER,
OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
SWEATER.
Application filed November 9, 1923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTIN SoHNnLL- woman, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sweaters, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to childrens sweaters and particularly to the construction of the neck portions of garments of this class composed of knitted fabric and more particularly to the provision of a V-piece for the neck portion of the garment and means for mounting said V-piece in connection with the garment; and the object of the invention is to provide a simple and yet effective means for mounting a V-piece in connection with the neck portion of a sweater in such manner as to permit of the free placement of the sweater on the body of the wearer and the removal thereof; a further object being to provide a sweater of the class specified, the neck portion of which is provided with a V-piece which will give a finish or ornamentation to the garment when in use; and with these and other objects in view, the invention consists in a sweater of the class and for the purpose specified which is simple in construction, and which is constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are des ignated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my im proved sweater showing a V-piece mounted in the neck portion thereof and indicating the method of attaching said V-piece;
Fig. 2 a plan view of the V-piece shown in Fig- 1 detached; and,
Fig. 3 a partial section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, and on an enlarged scale and with parts in a different position.
In practice, I provide a childs sweater 5 comprising a body portion 6 of knitted worsted, wool or other material as sweaters are commonly constructed, said body portion 6 being continuous around the front, back and sides thereof and provided centrally of the top portion with a neck opening 7 Serial No. 673,670.
around which the sweater is provided with a collar 8 formed independently of the body portion 6 and secured thereto by stitching or otherwise as indicated at 9 in Fig. 3 of the drawing. To the opposite sides of the top portion of the body 6 are outwardly extending sleeve members 10, and the ends of the sleeve members are provided with cuffs 11 which are preferably ornamented, and the bottom of the body portion 6 is provided with a skirt portion 12 which is also preferably ornamented. The ornamentation to the cuffs andskirt portion is produced by different combinations of colors., f9rmed in bands or the like which differentiates from the color of the worsted or other material from which the entire sweater ismade.
In attaching the collar 8 to the body portion 6 around the neck opening 7 the collar is attached to the body portion in such manner as to form at the opposite sides and bottom of the neck opening 7 inwardly directed flaps 13 to the inner faces of which are secured one part of a number of snap fastening devices 14, the female part in the construction shown. In Fig. 1 of the drawing I have shown five of the fastening devices or parts thereof 14. on the flap 13, two at the opposite sides of the neck opening and one at the base of the opening.
In practice, I employ a V-piece 15 of shield formation which is adapted to be mounted in the neck opening 7 to form a closure therefor below the chin or neck of the wearer at the front of the garment. The V-piece 15 is provided with the male parts 16 of the snap fastening devices which are secured to the front face thereof adjacent to the opposite sides and lower corner portion thereof in such spaced relation as to coincide with the parts ll secured to the flap 13.
The shield 15 is also preferably ornamented by different combinations of colors in the fabric to make the entire garment more attractive, and in the use of the garment it will be understood that the V-piece 15 is mounted in the neck opening 7 for engaging the attaching devices 16 with the devices 14, and in placing the garment on the body of the wearer the attaching devices at one side of the V-piece 15 are disengaged to permit of the passage of the head of the wearer through the neck opening 7, after which the V-piece is retained in position by re-engaging the attaching devices.
It will be noted that the flap 13 is merely an extension of the body portion 6 of the sweater and is formed by attaching the collar 8 to the body portion 6 inwardly of the edges formed by the neck opening as will be apparent, and in this way I provide a very simple and yet effective means of mounting and attaching a V-piece to the neck portion of the garment of the class under consideration. It will also be apparent that I am not necessarily limited to the detachable mounting of the V-piece in connection with the garment as one side of the V-piece only need be made detachable in the manner herein shown and described, and While I have shown and described certain details of construction for carrying my invention into effect, it will be understood that I am not necessarily limited to these details, and various changes therein and modifications thereof may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A. sweater of the class described comprising a body portion, the top portion of which is provided with a neck opening, a collar secured to the body portion around said neck opening and inwardly of the edges of the body portion to form an inwardly projecting flap integral with the body portion, at the front and sides of the neck opening, a V-shaped piece for partially closing said neck opening, and spaced attaching devices on said V-shaped piece and flap for detachably connecting said V-shaped piece with said flap.
2. A garment of the class described comprising a body portion provided with a collar secured to the body portion around the neck opening and inwardly of the edges of the body portion to form an inwardly projecting flap integral with the body portion at the front and sides of the neck opening, and a part secured to said flap and adapted to partially close the neck opening.
3. A garment of the class described comprising a body portion provided with a collar secured -.to the body portion around the neck opening and inwardly of the edges of the body portion to form an inwardly projecting flap integral with the body portion at the front and sides of the neck opening, a part secured to said flap and adapted to partially close the neck opening, and means for detachably mounting said part in connection with said flap.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name this 8th day of Nov. 1923.
MARTIN SCHNELLBACHER.
