and especially to those adapted to be rapidly put on and removed by the wearer.
One of the objects of this invention is the provision of a single overall garment in which the trousers and the coat covering portions are combined. A further object of this invention is the provision of means in said garment, for covering the crotch portion of the trousers of the wearer, so arranged as to automatically adjust itself into the proper position when the garment is put on.
A still further object of this invention is the provision of a simple garment, economically manufactured and efiicient for the purposes for which it is intended, which can be put on and taken off by the wearer with a minimum expenditure of effort and in a short space of time, and which provides' ample room for the free movement of the wearer in any direction while completely covering and protecting his clothes,
whereby said garment is made particularly useful for automobilists, as for emergency repairing.
For the attainment of the aforesaid and other objects, we employ the constructions shown in their preferred forms in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Fig. l is a perspective view of our improved garment as it appearsin place on the wearer. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the garment as it appears when partly open, showing our improved crotch piece in its collapsed position. Fig. 3 is a front view of a portion of the garment as it appears before the crotch piece has. beeninserted therein, and Fig. 4: is a similar view showing a modified form of the crotch piece in place.
In the illustrated embodiment of our invention, the garment comprises preferably the two main sections 10 and 11 similar in all respects excepting that one is made right hand and the other left hand, said sections being preferably seamed together longitudinally along their rear edges 12 as by means-of the seams 13 positioned along the middle of the back portion of said garment. The usual sleeves, collars and pockets may be provided as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, and the usual seams 14 may be made to form the shoulders of the garment.
It will be seen from Figs. 3 and 4: that in making the leg portions 15 and 16 of the main sections 10 and 11, of the desired shape, each of the rear edges 17 and 18 re-,
speetively thereof, beginning from the bottom edges 19 and 20 of said leg portions are inclined inwardly toward each other and toward the edges 12, said edges 17 and 18 being spaced from each other and terminating in the substantially horizontal edges 7 21 and 22 respectively, whereby a trapezoidal opening is formed in the central rear bottom portion of said garment. It will be noted that the seams 13 do not extend all the way down to the edges 21 and 22, but that said seams terminate a short distance above said edges, whereby the lowermost portions 12 of the edges 12 remain unseamed until the insertion therebetween of our improved crotch piece as 23. Said piece 23 is made preferably triangular in outline, each of the side edges thereof being suitably seamed to one of the edges 12", the lowermost edge of said piece being made longer than the distance between the extremities of said edges 12' when the garment is not in use, whereby said crotch piece tends to assume a p-laited or creased position in which it extends laterally from the rear edges 12 of the garment toward the front thereof. To insure this result, that is, the tendency of the crotch piece to position it self horizontally, we show in Fig. 4 a modified form of said crotch piece wherein the bottom edge is reinforced by means of a rib as 24, suit-ably held in the rib pocket 29, whereby the crotch piece and part of the sectionsIlO and 11 to which said crotch piece is connected are made to stand between the legs of the wearer for protecting his clothes at that point. It will be understood, however, that the said rib may be omitted from the crotch piece without lessening the eficacy of our garment.
For securing the leg portions 15 and 16 about the legs of the wearer, suitable fastening means such as snap fasteners, hooks or the buttons 25, are attached along the edges engage corresponding fastening elements such as the button holes 26 along the front edges 27 and 28 of the sections 10 and 11 respectively.
0 put on our improved garment, the arms of the wearer are inserted in the sleeves and the coat portion is then buttoned up as usual. The crotch piece 23whether shaped by the rib 24 or not, automatically assumes its horizontal lateral position when the garment is put on and covers the crotch of the wearers trousers, so that he may lie down or crouch in any position without .fear of'exposing his clothes to injury. By drawing the edges 1.7 and 18 around the leg of the wearer toward the edges 27 and 28 respectively and fastening the buttons, the garment is completely secured about the wearer in a very short space of time and with little effort.
It will of course be understood that the main, sections 10 and 11' are so shaped as to allow ample room for movement of the wearer without constriction while at the same time fully protecting every part of his clothes.
We claim:
1. In a garment comprising coat and trousers, a pair of similar sections each having a front edgestraight throughout the length thereof, a substantially vertical rear edge in thecoat portion thereof, a short, substantially horizontal edge at the lower end of said rear vertical edge, and'a rear'edge in the trouser. portion of said section beginning at the end of said horizontal edge and inclined away from said horizontal edge, a seam joining all but the lowermost portions of the rear vertical edges of said sections together, a
triangular insert having side edges joined to said lowermost portions of said rear vertical edges, and a lower edge longer than the distance between the lower extremities of said vertical edges, said insert. being'adapted a loose fit at the crotch of the wearer.
2; In a garment. combining coat and trousers, a pair of similar sections having straight front edges throughout the length --thereof, spaced upwardly converging rear edges, horizontal edges at the upper extremity of each of said converging edges, and vertical rear edges in the coat portion thereof seamed together to within a short distance of said horizontal'edges, a triangular insert having an edge longerthan the distance between the lowermost portion of said vertical edges inthe operative position of said straight front edges throughout the length thereof, a substantially triangular crotch member independent of said front edges for. providing a loose fit at the crotch. of the wearer and inserted between and separating part of said sections, a lower edge on said insert longer than the distance between the lowermost rear edges of said sections in the inoperative .position of said garment, and independent of the remainder of said garment in the operative position thereof, said crotch member being adapted tocollapse normally and to spread out to cover the crotchof the wearer in the operative position thereof,
and inclined seams connecting one side edge of said crotch member to sections.
4. A garment comprising a coat member, a trouser member integral with 'said coat each of said member, openable leg portions in said trouser member having straight'front edges throughout the length thereof and having spaced converging rear edges, and a substantially triangular crotch portion inserted between and adapted normally to collapse. between said leg portions and to spread out when the garmentis put on to cover the crotch of the wearer loosely, said crotch-portion comprising side edges'attachedto said leg portions, and a free bottom edge unattached to any part of said'garment in the operative position thereof, said bottom'edge being longer than the distance between the lowermost points of attachment of said side edges.
5. In a garment combining coat and trousers, openable leg portions, a substantially triangular crotch piece inserted between said leg portions at the juncture thereof, a bottom edge on said crotch piece longer than the distance between the lowermost points of attachment of said piece to said leg portions, seams securing the side edges of said crotch piece to each of said leg portions, and a rib in said bottom edge of said crotch piece for shaping and min forcing said edge.
Signed at New York,'in,the county of New York, and State of New York, this 21st day of November, A. D.- 1921.
