Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
THOMAS J. WATERS, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN PAPER BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,433, dated August 25, 1874; application filed July 29,1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. WATERS, of Baltimore, county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain Improvements in Paper Boxes.
The following description, taken in connection with the accompanying plate of drawings hereinafter referred to, forms a fulland exact specification, wherein are set forth the nature and principles of the invention, by which the same may be distinguished from others of a similar class, together with such parts thereof as are claimed as new and are desired to be secured by Letters Patent of the United States.
My invention relates to that class of paper boxes which are made use of for transmitting samples of merchandise through the mail; and the nature thereof consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, hereinafter shown and described.
In the accompanying plate of drawings, in which corresponding parts are illustrated by similar letters, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the box, with the lid thereof raised. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section.
The various parts are designated as follows:
A is the box. B is the lid, attached to the upper edge of the said box by a flexible joint or hinge, in the ordinary manner. 0 is a projection, formed upon the outer edge of the lid by doubling the paper of which -it is ,composed upon itself, in such a manner as to form a compact double thickness thereof and leave a projecting marginal piece, D, which serves as a handle for the said lid. The marginal piece D and projection U are of the same size and shape as the front piece G of the box-casing, so that when the box is closed they will form a support for the lid, and prevent it from being crushed or forced downward.
Having thus described the construction of my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- A box composed of the body A, lid B, projection O, and marginal piece D, as and for the purposes described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 25th day of July, 1874. y
THOS. LWATERS. "it-nesses:
M. I. WEsooTT, H. H. SEGERMAN.
