IMPROVEMENT IN DOORS FOR GRAIN-CARS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,410, dated June 23, 1874; application filed February 24, 1873.

To all 'whom it may concer/n Be it known that I, HIRAM PURDY, of Burlington, in the county of Des Moines and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Doors for Grain Cars or Vehicles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specifica tion.

My invent-ion relates to an improvement in doors of grain-carrying cars or vehicles.

In the drawings, Figure l is a view in perspective of my invention, as seen from the in side of a car to which it is attached; Fig. 2, a view, in plan, ofthe same; and Fig. 3, a view of the same in perspective, as seen from the outside of the car.

My invention consists as follows: The door A is swung upon the single swivel-hinge B, attached to one of its upper corners. This hinge may be either thc swivel-hinge or there may be used a universal joint or any other desired style\of hinge. By the operation of the single hinge B the door A may be turned in any desired direction. Should the car be filled with grain, when the door A is raised by the outside metal catch a, the pressure of the grain upon the lower corner of the door opposite to the hinge B will force said corner outward and the upper corner opposite the hinge inward, and, when desired, the door can be swung out of the way in almost any desired position. To prevent the escape of grain I fasten to each side and to the bottom of the door A strips of rubber or other suitable elastic material C, which, pressing against the oor and wall of the car, prevent the escape of any gratin. When the door is closed it is secured by the swinging hook D, held in position by the leciti-piece d also by the bent piece E, which is attached to the lower part of the door opposite the hinge, and which is made to slide behind and hook upon l'the piece c, secured to the jamb j'.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire t0 secure by Letters Patent, is-

The grain-car door consisting of the door A, provided with the single swivel-hinge B, elastic strips C, and securing latches or hooks E e D d, all constructed and combined to operate substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
