Description
aps. SARGHET. v Sash-Lock. No. 204,096 Patented 'May21, 1878'.
.WITJVES3BY' V I ENTORS B i;
N PETERS, FNOTO-LITNOGRAFNER. WASHINGTON.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE B. SAROHET, OF CHARLESTON, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-LOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent .No. 204,096, dated May 21, 1878 application filed April 8, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
4 Be it known that I, GEORGE B. SARGHET, of Charleston, in the county of Ooles, and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Locks;
and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention relates to sashfasteners; and it consists in the combination, with a case, of two bolts having curved recesses, and provided-with stops extending in opposite directions through slots in the case, and a double reverse-action tumbler having a slotted hub, and also in hooks or lugs formed at the ends of the double-action tumbler, in combination with the bolts, all as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which p Figure 1 is an end view of the sash-lock, showing the key at the side thereof. Fig. 2 is an interior view of the lock. Fig. 3 is a detailed view of the lock-tumbler, and Fig. 4 shows the application of my invention to a window frame and sash.
A represents the lock-case, provided at top and bottom with a perforated lug, B, for the fastening-screws, the body of the lock-case being ,mortised into the window-jamb at or near the center, at the junction of the two sashes. In recesses formed at the top and bottom inside of the case are placed two sliding bolts,O and O, which are provided, respectively, with projecting stops D and D, extending in opposite directions through slots in the case A, the upper stop, D, being intended to work in the upper sash, and the lower stop, 1), for the lower sash.
The bolts 0 G are formed with curved recesses a a on the faces that are opposite each other--that is to say, in the'under side of the top bolt and in the upper side of the bottom bolt. In these recesses work the ends of a tumbler, D, which is pivoted in the center of the lock, said tumbler being provided with a slotted hub, b, for the insertion of a key, F. This key has a flange, e, on one side to fit in the slot of the hub.
By turning the key F to the right, the up-- per end of the tumbler D, moves the upper bolt and stop back, while the lower bolt andstop remain in position. By areverse motion the lower bolt and stop are thrown back, while the upper bolt and stop are held in position.
Spiral springs d d are placed, respectively, behind the bolts O O to throw the same outward. As either bolt and stop is thrown back the corresponding sash can be raised or lowered.
he ends of the tumbler D are provided each with a hook or lug, i, as shown, by which, when either bolt is thrown back and the sash unlocked, the bolt is held back, thereby affording the operator a chance to use both hands to raise and lower the sash.
The lid A of the case Ais secured by a single screw at w.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a sash-lock, the combination, with the case A, of the bolts 0 0, having recesses a a, and provided with the stops D D, extending in opposite directions through slots in the case,-the springs d d, and the double reverseaction tumbler D having slotted hub 1), substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The hooks or lugs i '5, formed at the ends of the double-action tumbler D in combination with the bolts O O,for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 6th day of March, 1878.
GEORGE B. SARGHET.

JOHN S. THEAKER, S. M. LEIToH.
