Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT L. PRUYN, OF ATON ROUGE, LOUISIANA, ASsIeNoR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO SAMUEL M. HART, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-FA STENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 167,935, dated September 21, 1875; application filed July 31, 1875.
CASE A.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT L. PRUYN, of Baton Rouge, in the parish of East Baton Rouge and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Sash- Fasteners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon. Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a vertical sectional view of my sash-fastener, and Fig. 2 is a sectional detail View of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view, and Fig. 4. a sectional detail view, thereof.
This invention has relation to improvements in sash-fasteners.
The object of the invention is to provide a means whereby a single latching device may be made to lock the upper and lower sashes, so that they cannot be lowered in the one case or raised in the other, and so that one may be raised or lowered independently of the other, and locked at the desired point of adjustment; and, finally, so that the one may be lowered and the other raised, and both be locked when adjusted in the desired position.
To this end the nature of the invention consists in a sliding bolt recessed into the jamb of the window-frame, and provided at each end with a raised lug, in combination with the upper and lower sashes, having notches upon their lateral edges, as will be hereinafter more fully explained.
In the annexed drawings, A designates a section of the jamb of a window-frame, provided'with exterior guide-strips a a and an intermediate strip, b, serving to hold the sashes and to guide them accurately when they are either raised or lowered. B represents my improved sash-fastener, which may be made of any suitable metal, and is provided at each end with a raised lug, 0. This sash-fastener, which is in the nature of a bolt, is arranged in a plate, D, recessed into the frame-jamb, with its outer surface flush With that of the said frame, and is guided therein during its reciprocations, the said plate being provided with beveled guides d for the purpose; and it is provided with an operating handle, 6, projecting out from the same, as shown in Fig. 2. A
Bolt B is arranged transverse to guidingstrips' 0. a b of the frame; and one ofits lugs, which I designate by the letter 0, is adapted to be received in a recess of corresponding shape in the central guide-strip b, while the other lug, 0, will be in a recess of corresponding form in the inner detachable strip a.
The space between lugs c 0 being equal to that between strips to and b, and to the width respectively, in a notch in the upper and in v the lower sashes by thrusting the bolt outward, thereby preventing the former from being lowered, or the latter from being raised, from the outside; and if the bolt be drawn inward, thereby allowing either sash to be operated, the upper sash may be lowered for the purpose of allowing the foul air in the upper part of a room to escape, and then looked into position by thrusting the bolt outward, so that the said sash cannot be further lowered, to give access to a burglar, from -'the outside. The lower sash may be also'raised and locked by the same means, and this holds good whether the sashes be balanced or not.
What 1 claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is The slidin g bolt B, having terminal lugs c 0, adapted to be received into recesses, respectively, in the central guide-strip b and detachable inner guide-strip a of a window-frame, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT L. 'PRUYN. Witnesses:
ALVAN E. READ, A. W. SIMMONS.
