WIT ESSES INVENTOi R ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELBERT STANNARD, OF WESTBROOK, CONNECTICUT.
[IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 178,198 dated May 30, 1876 application filed March 25 1876.
Toall whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EILBERT STANNARD, of Westbrook, in the county of Middlcsex and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Window-Sash Fasteners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation or the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked there- Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a longitudinal vertical section of the frame .and sashes, showing the pawl-prop in position for locking the latter. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of my improved sash-lock and Figs. 3, 4., 5, 6, 7, and 8 are details.
This invention has relation to improvements in sash-locks, the object of which is to prevent sashes from being either raised or lowered from the outside.
This invention has relation to improvements in sash-fasteners; and it consists in the novel combination, with a vibratory prop, having spurs above and below its pivot, and arranged in line with and forming a part of the partingstrip, of a peculiar seat-plate recessed into the window-frame, in line with the said strip, and provided with grooves adapted to receive the said spurs, whereby the pivot of the prop is secured against undue strain. It also consists in the combination, with the parting-strip and the parting-strip groove of the windowframe, of a sash-fastener, consisting of a pivotal prop and its holder or seat-plate, notched at its ends, extending into said groove and engaging with the said sections, as will be hereinafter more fully explained and definitely claimed.
In the annexed drawings, the letter A designates an ordinary window-frame, having an upper sash, B, and a lower sash, C, arranged therein, in the customary manner, between outer guide-strips a and a parting-strip, b.
, The parting-strip b is cut away from a point slightly below the meeting-rails of the sashes to a point several inches above the same, dividing said parting-strip into an upper-and a lower section, and in the interval thus formed is placed my improved sash-lock, consisting of abolt, D, pivoted at or nearthe center of its length 'to a metallic holder-plate, E, recessed into the 1 parting-strip groove in the frame. The bolt and its holder are practically a part of the strip 1), and their edges are flush with the correspondingedges of the said strip, the sections of which are provided with projections to engage with the notched ends of the seat-plate, whereby they are held in place in the parting-strip groove. Consequently, when the bolt and strip are in line, the sashes may be raised or lowered without opposition from the former; but if this bolt'be out of line with strip b, its lower end will bear against I the meeting-rail of the lower sash, and its upper end enter a notch, 0, in the side rail of the upper one, and it will be found impossible to raise the former or lower the latter. In order to prevent the meeting-rail of sash G from being defaced by the bolt D, as well as to fill up the space between them, I employ a metallic wedge-shaped foot-plate, F, secured to the meeting-rail of said sash, upon which the foot or lower end of the said bolt will be received when it is in a position for lockin g the sashes and in order that the upper sash may be lowered a little for purposes of ventilation, and be then looked, I provide the side rail of the upper sash with one or more notches, 0, above notch c, with which the upper end of the bolt will as readily engageas with-the said notch c, and thus prevent the said sash from being further lowered by a burglar from the outside. A notched plate or block, K, having an offset, 2, may be let into the sash, if greater security is desired, as the offset is designed to engage with a similar offset or hook at the upper end of the prop, to prevent movement of the sash in either direction. In order to provide against the breaking of the pivot 01, whereby the bolt is secured to its holder-plate, and prevent the consequent detachment of the former from the latter, the bolt will be provided with a lug, 6, above and below pivot 11, engaging in curved grooves i in corresponding positions in the holder-plate. These grooves, being open at one end and closed at the other, serve as stops, and will allow the bolt to. vibrate only sufiiciently to lock the sashes, and no farther. In lieu of the fixed heel-plate F, above described, on the meeting-rail of the lower sash, I may,
the double function of a pawl and prop, and
notches c c are provided with wedge-shaped metallic blocks 7', which will prevent the said bolt from bruising the sash, and by jamming the latter in its ways prevent it from rattling. What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- a 1. The combination, with the vibrating prop D, having spurs 0 above and below'its pivot,
and arranged in line with and adapted to form a part of the parting-strip, of the holder or seat-plate E, recessed into the window-frame, in line with said strip, and provided with grooves 71, to engage with -said spurs, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the parting-strip sections and the parting-strip groove, of the sash-holder, consisting of the pivoted prop D,
and its holder or seat-plate E, notched at the ends, extending into said groove and engagwith said sections, substantially as speci- In testimony that I claim the ahoveI have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
