ALBERT L, HITOHCOCK, or PAwTUoKET, RHODE ISLAND.
WEATH ER-STRIP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 496,876, dated May 9, 1893.
Application filed June 13, 1892. Serial No. 436,621. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT L. HITCHCOOK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pawtucket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Weather-Strips; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which'it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of my invention is to provide a weather strip, which is a complete protection and can be easily applied to any form of door either single or double and I accomplish this by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure l is a front elevation of door and strip, door being closed. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of same. Fig. 3 is a top, plan view of strip and its attachments upon the door sill. Fig. 4 is a top, plan View of same the door being open; Fig. 5 a view of the engaging lifter, and the bearing in which same is secured; and Fig. 6 a top view of lifter, dotted lines showing position of same when lying flat.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout.
In Fig. -l- A designates a double door closed. To the bottom of the door is secured to each section a metal strip. In Fig. 2 this strip is shown secured to the bottom of the door and extending at an angle therefrom.
-B designates a strip of metal, which is secured to the sill'of the door, and hung upon the same by the staples c c-, set on the outer edge thereof in such a manner that the strip will hinge upon the same and its free end can be readily raised or lowered. Upon this strip is secured the lifter a, made of metal, and swinging from right to left or vice versa in the bearing b, a flat strip of metal raised in the center and riveted to the strip -B-. This lifter may be described as of irregular shape springing outward and upward from the bearing -b-, and flat upon its under side, its purpose being to engage the strip .a on the front of the door when the door is shut, and raise the strip b upon the door sill and thus form a complete cut-01f to outside air. purpose of this swinging lifter is for use on double doors, although equally practicable for single doors, the great trouble hitherto in the use of a litter being that when at times both the doors must be swung open, the lifter remains vertical and is a constant obstruction, but with the employment of my swinging lifter, the lifter can be easily invert-ed by the toe of the boot, and will then lie flat and out of the way. I have preferred to exhibit it in use on double doors as its use is of special advantage, and I would'also call attention to the use of staples forming a simple and practical hinge.
The advantages of my invention are obvious and need not be referred to here.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In weather strips the combination of a metal strip --a firmly secured to the bottom of a door, extending outwardly at an angle therefrom the metal strip B- loosely secured to the door sill by staples -c c, and the engaging lifter a swinging in the bearing The particular my hand in the presence of subscribing witnesses.
ALBERT L. HITCHCOOK. In presence of- ALMON H. TUCKER, EDWARD W. BLODGETT.
