Description

- v. s. JOHNSON RENEWABLE SIGN PLATE Filed May 15. 1922 INVEN TOR.
ATTORNEY.
Patented June 23, 1925.
UNITED STATES VICTOR S. JOHNSON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
RENEWABLE SIGN PLATE.
Application filed May 15, 1922. Serial No. 560,970,
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Vroron S. JoI-rNsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Renewable Sign Plates, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to signs of the kind which are disposed along the highways, although it may be advantageously employed in the construction of any advertising devices wherein a change in advertising matter is desirable.
In its broad aspect, the invention consists of a removable sign plate carried by a frame which is made removable to admit of the invention being restricted to specific devices which admit of the aforesaid substitution of one sign plate for another sign plate. The specific construction of the companion application is designed for use with a single post sign, whereas the invention of the present application is associated with a double or two-post sign.
The invention will be understood if reference is made to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a view showing the sign in front elevation;
Figure 2 is a vertical section taken on the line 22 of Figure 1.
The sign, as a whole, is sustained by spaced posts, 1, 1, which are connected by suitable transverse beams, 2, 2, the lower one of which may rest upon brackets, 3, 3, the upper one being supported in any suitable manner. I
Disposed between the beams 2, 2, is a main frame, t, which is, preferably, a permanent part of the structure, and is so disposed with reference to the beams as to leave room behind it for a removable supplemental frame, 5, carrying a sign plate, 6, which is to be attached to said supplemental frame before it is inserted in the sign, this work being preferably done in the factory. The supplemental framemay be provided with braces, 7, which bear upon the rear surface of the sign plate, and thus re-inforce it.
Secured to the posts, 1, are transverse retaining bars, 8, 8, which are held in position by suitable and easily-removable devices, such as lag screws, 9, 9. Removal of these bars liberates the supplemental frame and the sign plate, and their replacement firmly holds a substituted sign plate in position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, is:
1. A sign including a main frame, posts, a co-inciding supplemental frame carrying a sign plate, and beams supported by said posts and arranged above and below said frames, the main frame being fixed to said beams and the sign plate being disposed between said frames and behind said main frame, and said main frame constituting a margin for said sign plate.
2. A sign including spaced posts, horizontal spaced beams attached to said posts, a main frame disposed between said beams, and a removable co-inciding supplemental frame, also disposed between said beams and behind said main frame, said main frame constituting a margin for a sign plate carried by said supplemental frame.
3. A sign including posts, a main frame and a removable supplemental frame, a sign plate disposed between said frames, and at tached to said supplemental frame and bars for securing said supplemental frame in fixed relation to the sign, said main frame constituting a margin for said sign plate.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
V vroron s. JOHNSON.
Witnesses IV. H. F. MILLS, I/V. H. KADING.
