Description

Patented July 24, 1923 UNITED STATES insane Application filed May 19, 1922. Serial No. mama To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM B; FINK, a citizen of the United States, and resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in; a Sign Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates more particularly to a class of devices adapted to be used for publicity purposes.
y invention has for its object primarily to provide a device or holder designed to be employed for framing removable signs, especially of forms having advertisements and other subject matters painted or otherwise inscribed on both faces of a surface element so that the device may be positioned in a conspicuous place whereby the subject matter will be observed by persons from the front as well as from the rear of the de-.
vice',-'thus permitting the utilization in one sign of a surface. area equivalent to the surface' area of two signs. The invention consists essentially of an outer frame element having a recess throughout its length for receiving a removable surface element on both faces of which are provided advertise- ,ments or other subject matters for display to persons, and in therecess of the outer frame element as well as being disposed on the marginal edge of the surface element is removably fastened an inner frame element so that when the device is displayed in either an upstanding position or in a suspended position the subject matter on both drawing faces of the surface element may be observed by persons.
A further object of the invention is to provide a sign holder of a simple, eflicient and durableconstruction which may be made in any appropriate size and shape.
With these and other objects in view' the invention will be hereinafter more fully dethe accompanying.
scribed with reference to forming a part ofthis specification in which smilar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and will then be pointed out in the claims at the end ofthe description;
In the drawing, Figure 1 is an elevation of a sign holder embodying my invention, and which is of a form supported in an upstandingpositiom Fig. 2 ,s a sectional view,
member23 of its walls partly frag-- mentary and partly detail, taken on the size and shape, though the form of the element illustrated is substantially rectangular to provide a bottom bar 11, top bar 12, and side bars 13, 14 all of which may be made of metal or other suitable material. The bars of this outer frame element are substantially L-shaped'in cross section to provide each of a form having a' flange member 15 with a second flan e member 16 protruding angularly from t e outer perimeter of the member 15. 'A recess 17 is thereby provided in one face of the outer frame member.
An inner. frame element 18 is removably seated in the recess 17 of the outer frame element 10, and this inner frame element is also preferably substantially rectangular to provide a bottom bar 19, top bar 20 and side bars 21, 22. These bars of the inner frame element are substantiall L-shape in cross section to provide each of a form having a flange member 23 with a flange member 24 extending angularly from one of its marginal edges. The inner frame element 18. is of a size as well as being disposed in the outer frame element so that the flange snugly fit removably in lapping arrangement on the inner face of the flange member 16 of the outer frame element '10 and so that the flange member 24 of the. inner frame element is in spaced relation to the flange member '15 of the outer frame element. The flange member 23 of the inner frame element is also preferably of less width than the width of the flange member 16 of the outer frame element so that the free edge of the flange member '23 is spaced from the elbow 'of the outer frame element in order to provide a groove, as 25, extending the entire length of the frame elements. Inthe groove 25 is removably mounted the marginal edge of a element, as 26, which may be of I Ell) or otherwise inscribed advertisements, as 27 for bein displayed so that the sub ect mattors-of t e Sign will be observed by persons [viewing it from either of its faces. The surface element 26 is disposed with1n the outerframeelement '10 prior to fitting the inner frame element "therein so that the flange member 23 of the inner frame elee m'ent serves to clamp the surface element in 10 the outer frame element, and both of the frame elements may be detachably fastened together by screws or bolts, as 28 being driven through registered threaded .holes provided in spaced. parts of the lapping i5 flange members 16 and 23 of the top bars 12 and.20 of the frame elements.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, forms of the holder maybe made for .display inupstand! ing positions by supporting the outer and an inner frame elements. with the 'surfaceelement 26 on a standard, as 29. The standard 29 may be formed witlia base 30 of a suitable size .and weight, and on this base is an upwardly extending post 31 having on its 25 upper end abracket or yoke or substantially U-shapedQstrap, as 82. .Thelower bars 11 and 19 of. the outer and inner. frame elements are removably seated in the U-shaped bracket, and these bars are detachably tasaotened to the bracket by screws or bolts 33 being driven through registered holes provided in spaced parts of the braoketand in the flange member 16 of thebar 11 of the outer frame element 1Q. a 1 35 Serving as means to permit the outer and inner frame elements with the surface elefnent to bev displayed in suspended position instead-.ofbeing-supported on the standar 29, I proyide pn theupper bars 12*ai1d 20 4 of the frame elements two or more spaced rings or eyes,- as 34, and these eyes are ro-' 'tatably mounted in) registered -openings pro vided in the lapping flange" members 16 and 23 of the upper bars ofthe frame elements sothat by 'revolvablyadjusting the eyes-in the positions, shown in Fig. 3,. the holder and surface element may be suspended on suitable hooks or the like,- not shown, or by revolvably adjusting the eyes so that they are inregister the .{holder and surface ele=v ment may be supported in suspensionby the'eyes being removably mounted on a bar or red, as 35 Fig. 4, which in turn may extend from asuitable support, as 36. In the foregoing description,
frame element of substantially I have em t bodied the preferred form of my invention, but I do not wish to be 'understoodas limitin myself thereto, asI am aware that mo ifications may be made therein without.
departing from the principle orssacrifioing any of the advantages of this invention, therefore, I reserve to myself the right to make such changes asfairly fall within the scope thereof. I r ,Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire-to secure by Letters Patent 1. A sign' holder, comprising an" outer an L-shape' in cross section, an inner frame element also of substantially an L-shape in 'crossise'ctiomi' the inner frame element being disposed withw in the outer frame elementlso thattwooorresponding flanges of the elements are in spaced relation, while the-other two 001}- responding flanges of the elements are in lapping arrangement and the freeledge of thelapping flange of the inner frame elef v ment being spaced from the elbow of the,"
,outer frame element to provide a groove 8 therebetween, means detachably fastening the lapping flange members together, a
standard, and means removably. mounting the frame elements to the standard. ,2. A sign holder, comprising an outer frame element; of substantially an L-shape' in cross section, an inner frame'elementalso 7 of substantially an L-shape in cross section, v the inner frame element 'being disposed frame elements to the standard, and ad- -justable means on the outerframe element whereby both frameelementstmay be pended from a support.
This specification signed and witnessed this-18 day'of May, -A. D. 1922.
