Patented July 14, 1874l UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SILAS BARKER, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN TACKK-HAMMERS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent N o. 152,960, dated July 14, 1874; application filed May 25, 1874.
To all lwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SILAs BARKER, of Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tack-Hammers; 'and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, whereby a person skilled in the art can make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Like letters in the figures indicate the same part-s.
My invention has for its object providing a convenient tool for driving and drawing ont tacks or small nails. The said invention consists in a hammer-head provided with suitable grooves for holding it iirmly while in use, and having an interchangeable screw-driver and claw, which lit into the head at the end opposite the face. It also consists in making the claw with a screw-driver upon the end which is inserted in the handle. It also consists in rounding or chamfering the corner or edge ing it more conveniently with the thumb and fingers. B is the detachable claw. It has at one end the'usual prongs, bent at the proper angle, as shown at b, and at the other end it is furnished with a screw-driver, d, for turning the set-screw S when another' tool is inserted in the handle. C is a screw-driver to tit in the place of the claw B. It can be used for withdrawing tacks or nails where'the claw b will not operate, as well as for all the usual purposes ot' a screw-driver. When the claw B is inserted in the handle this screw-driver is used to operate the set-screw S, the edge c being made to fit this screw. e e are ilat places upon the shafts of the tools, to receive the end of the screw S, and hold the tool more firmly. fis a chamtered or rounded part of the edge of the face of the hammer A. This comes against the hand when the claw is used, and prevents thefsharp corner from injuring it. The opposite part of the face is left sharp for use in hammering upon the head of the tack.
What I claim as my invention is- An improved tool consisting' of an interchangeable claw and screw-driver, combined with a metallic handle having a hammer-face upon its end, the whole constructed and arranged substantially as described.
