Description

(No Mo del.)
' A. ELLYTLE,
COMBINATION TOOL. Y
.No.- 292,168. Patented Jan; 22, 1884.
UNITE STATES PATENT OFF-ICEO ALBERT E. LYTLE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
COMBINATION-TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 292,168, dated January 22, 1801.
Application filed November 28, 1883. (No model.)
To all witch 11" it may concern Be it known that I, ALBERT E. LYTLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Tools, of which the following is a specification, to wit:
This invention relates to an improvement in combination-tools; and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement. of the same, substantially as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe it, referring to the accompanying drawing, in which the figure represents a perspective view of my tool.
' A represents a hatchet, and B its handle,
cast in one piece, as represented. On the back of the hatchet is formed a hammer-head, a, having a nail-claw, a, as shown. In the body of the head A is formed a square opening, I), forming a nut-wrench, and upon the forward edge is a screw-driver, c. The handle B is provided with a series of graduations to inches and fractions of the same, as seen at c, and is also formed with two openings or nut-wrenches, b b, of different size, as shown. The rear end of the handle B is sharpened and beveled upon its under side, to form a box-opener, d, and this is also formed with a notch, d, forming a tack-puller.
Upon the back of the handle B, near the hammer-head, is formed an angular lug, e, 5 having a toe, e, which is used as a hoop-lifter for barrels and easks, and the blade of the hatchet is provided with a nail lifter or notch, f, as usual. s
g The operation of the various tools is obvio ous, and will be readily understood without detailed explanation, except the hoop-lifter, which is used thus: Place the hammer upon the head of the cask or barrel, with the end of the stave projecting between it and the toe e,- 5 then catch this toe under the edge of the hoop, and it is readily pried ofi.
Thewhole forms a handy and useful combination of implements of general utility, which are cheaply cast in one piece, preferably of 50 tool-steel.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination-tool herein described, con- 55 sisting of the hatchet A, hammer a, nail-claws a f, screw-driver c, nut-wrenches b bb, scale or measure 0, hoop-lifter e e, box-opener d,
and tack-puller d, all constructed, combined,
and arranged for operation substantially as'6o shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT E. LYILE.
