Description
State of Ohio, have invented certain new and 7 top edge, so as to let the back tilt freely for- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIoE.
JAMES M. CAMPBELL, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN GA ITERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,460, dated June 30, 1874; application filed June 5, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES M. CAMPBELL, of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and useful Improvements in Gaiters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
The nature of my invention relates to an improvement in gaiters; and it'consists in the peculiar cut of the front, back, and fasteningstrap, as will be more fully described hereafter.
The accompanying drawings represent my invention.
it represents the front, which is joined to the vamp 0 along the seam l, and which is cut wider at its bottom than its top, and has the curved edges 2, so that it can be made to tilt backward, as shown, to meet the back (I. The back (I is formed in a single piece, has curved rounding'edges 3, and is joined to the counter J alongthe seam 5. It is alsocut wider at its lower than its upper edge, as shown in Fig. 2, so that it will tilt forward to meet the front a without strain, the counterj being raised somewhat at the center of its ward without strain at this point and to fit more snugly around the ankle. By tilting the front and back in this manner they are made to grasp the leg and yet allow free and ample room for the ankle to move about in.
The fastening-strap 0 has its inner edge 4 cut rounding, as shown in Fig. 4, and is joined to the front a by the seam 6 and to the top of the counter at the point 7. By making the edge of this strap rounding it forms a socket in which the ankle rests. Secured near the center of the back, by means of a short strap, is the buckle g, which is located at such a point as to be out of the way.
The pulling-011 straps i are secured to the front edge of the front a, and the other to the side of the back d just in rear of the side opening. By locating the strap on the side of the back it is out of the way, so that it will not be constantly catching under the bottom of the pantaloons, and it affords a much more direct pull in drawing on the shoe.
I am aware that it is not new to have the front and back out so as to tilt toward each other and be smaller up above than around the ankle, and I do not claim such.
Having thus described my invention, I elai1n A gaiter composed of the front a, upper 6-, back (I, strap 0, and strap i, located on the side of the back, the parts being out as described and united by seams at the points 1, 5, 6, 7, substantially as shown.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand this 30th day of May, 1874.
JAMES M. CAMPBELL.
