Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN HASZINGER, OF VIOKSBURG, MISSISSIPPI.
SHOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 267,887, dated November 21, 1882. Application filed August 17,1882. (No model.)
To all whom tt may concern:
Be it known that I, 'JoHN 'HASZINGER, of Vicksburg, in the county of Warren and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shoes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in that form of shoe which is constructed without side seams; and the invention consists of an upper having the tongue so iormed as to provide edges for attaching, tie-straps, the object being to provide a so-called seamless shoe which shall be strongly supported at the instep, and Which, for such a shoe, shall be formed at a minimum of expense in actual cutting and stitching, without at the same time involving greater expense of stock than is ordinarily required for a seamless shoe.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of the shoe, and Fig. 2 is a blank from which the upper is formed.
The upper A, which is made in a single piece, has slots at a, of angular shape, cut in its sides from the center, and extending obliquely downward to form the tongue b, and to provide a curved edge, 0, to which the instep-strap d is to be sewed. With this construction the straps may be made of heavier and stronger leather than the body of the upper, as is needed, and
1 they may. also be made of suitable length for buckles, if desired. Notonly a perfect and easy fit, but durability and economy in cutting are thus secured. 4
I am aware. that tie-straps or buckle-straps 'as a heel-lifter'and to re-enforce the side elastics.
This construction, however, is only adapted to gaiters in which the uppers are formed of two or more pieces. In my invention, on the contrary, the upper may be formed. of a single piece, and scraps of leather may be utilized in forming the tie-straps, which are sewed to the lower edge of slots cut in the vamp to form the tongue, and in such manner that they shall completely cover the slots when tied across the instep.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The shoe-upper having the angular slots aa cut through its sides and extending obliquely downward to form the tongue I), and having the straps d 01 sewed to the outer edges, 0 c, of the slots, and adapted to cover the said slots when tied across the tongue, substantially as and for the purposes specified. I
JOHN HASZINGER. Witnesses:
I JAS. H. KING,
HERMAN H. BIEDENHARN.
