Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 188,701, dated March 20, 1877; application filed February 9, 1877.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MELVIN H. WALKER, of Westborough, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plow- Shoes 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents a view of the outer side of a plow-shoe with my improvements applied thereto. Fig. 2 represents the opposite or inner side of the shoe. Fig. 3 represents the main portion of the upper, and a part of the leg, after it has been cut out preparatory to being made up into the shoe. Fig. 4 represents another portion of the upper and leg, .as will be hereafter explained. Fig. 5 represents another part of the shoe, as will be hereafter explained, and Fig. 6 represents the tongue, hereafter more fully explained.

To enable those skilled in the art to which my invention belongs to make and use the same, I will proceed to describe it more in detail.

In the drawings, the parts lettered A, B, and O are cut in one piece, a cut, a, from 1 to 2, being made between the parts B and 0, whereby part 0 can be turned down, so that its edge b can be stitched to the lower edge 3 of the part D, while the edge c'is turned under and secured to the sole, as indicated in Fig. 1, while'the edges 4 and 5 of the parts B and D are stitched together to form the back seam d, the upper portion of the partD forming a part of the leg, as shown in Fig. 1, while the tongue E is stitched to both the parts D and E. The edge e of tongue E being stitched to the upper portion of edge 3 of piece D,

while the edge f is stitched to the edge 9 of the piece F, the tongue-piece E occupying the position when folded up and the shoe strapped about theankle, as indicated in dotted lines, Figs. 1 and 2. of the drawings, and a metallic stay, h, is inserted so as to hold the lower end of tongue E and the parts 0 and D firmly together also metallic stays 43 may be employed to more firmly secure the upper part of tongue E to parts F and D, as indicated in Fig. 1'. The

part Fis stitched, as shown in Fig. 1, and when said parts are stitched together, and the sole G and heel H properly secured to the upper, a very secure and durable plow-shoe is obtained and one, too, which has a tight and secure seam for some distance below the lower end of the tongue-piece E, while ample provision is secured for the enlargement of the leg when the shoe is to be put on or taken off of the foot. It will also be observed that the cut of the parts B, O, D, and F are such that the shoe can be cut with great economy of stock, the parts D, E, and F being cut from small pieces of leather. It will also be observed that if it is desired to reduce the length of the leg the upper edges b and 7c of the parts B and O, as shown in Fig. 3, may be reduced down, the additional portion taken off of the edge I), the part 0 being made up by cutting the piece D a little wider. Two straps, I and J, in this instance, are riveted onto the parts 0 and F, as indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawings. These straps are combined with buckle-pieces K, riveted to the part D, and provided with buckles K, and by this arrangement the shoe is securely held about the ankle and above the instep.

The buokle-pieces K may be secured and stitched to the part D, and the parts I and J reversed and stitched to the parts F and G, if preferred.

It will be seen from the foregoing description that I am able to produce a much better and more durable shoe for the purposes for which it is intended than by any other method now employed, and that, too, as before stated, by an economy of stock.

Having described myimprovements in plowshoes, what I claim therein as new, and of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The plow-shoe upper composed of the parts A, B, G, D, and F, cut in the form described and shown.

2. A plow-shoe in which the parts A, B, O,

-D, and F, cut as shown and described, are

combined with the piece E and straps and buckles, as set forth.
