UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM BEATTIE, OF PORTAGE, WISCONSIN.
LEG AND FOOT PROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 237,667, dated February 8, 1881.
Application filed August 30, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM BEAT'IIE, of Portage, in the county of Columbia and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Leg and Foot Protectors; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertaius to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective front view ot' one of my improved protectors. Fig. 2 is a perspective view otl the Opposite sideotl the same, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section.
Similar' letters ot reference indicate corresponding parts in all the ligures.
My invention relates to protectors or leg` and foot coverings adapted to be worn inside the bootin cold weather, and is especially intended for the use of farmers and lumbermen in the Northern and Northwestern States, where the winters are very severe and frostbitten feet of frequent occurrence.
It consists in the improvement hereinafter set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claim. Y
In the annexed drawings, A represents the leg part or upper', which is made of a single piece of sheep-skin with the wool on, without any seam. The sole, which is of the same material, is stitched to the under side of the upper in the usual manner. The leg-piece A is cut with a Hap, B, which overlaps the front opening, and is provided with straps C for bucklingthe upper tightly around the leg.
(No model.)
In the upper end of the flap B is a leather loop,l),corresponding to a similar loop on the opposite side or rear part ot' the upper.through which is inserted the leather strap E, having buckle F. This arrangement of the strap enables the upper part ot" the leg-piece to be strapped tightly around the leg without bagging.
Around the upper rim of the leg-piece A, on the inside, I stitch a piece ot" sheep-skin, G, reaching up to the top of the upper A and folding inwardly, as shown more clearlylin Fig. 3 ofthe drawings. This piece forms a packing, so to speak, which will prevent the ingress of snow or water into the upper, and also facilitates a better adjustment of the top strap, E, below which its lower edge is stitched to the upper.
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent ot' the United States- The described leg and foot warmer or protector, composed of the leg and foot piece or uppe1A,provided with a sole and with a liap, B, having straps O, buckles arranged opposite to said straps, inside packing-strip or collar, Gr, strap-loops D D', and detachable strap E, having buckle F, substantially as and for the purpose shown and speciiied.
In testimony that I claim 'the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed Iny signature in presence ot' two witnesses.
WILLIAM BEATTIE.
Witnesses N. J. GUREIER, JOHN T. JONES.
