To all whom it may concern:

In carrying out the invention I find it advisable to secure one end of the retainingstrap to the lower edge of the instep-covering, at one side of the middle thereof, the position, of the secured end of the retaining-strap corresponding to the relative position of the buckle and loop, so that when the free end of the draw-strap is passed through the loop and buckle it will tightly and evenly draw both sides of the instep-covering to the shoe and cause it to conform closely thereto.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a side-opening legging, showing the leg portion, the instep-covering, and the combined retaining and draw strap, the strap in this view being unfastened. Fig. 2 is a similar view to Fig. 1, with the retaining and draw straps fastened. Figs. 3 and 4 are similar views to Figs. 1 and 2, respectively, showing a modification of the draw-straps shown in Figs. 1 and2, respectively.

the meeting edges of which are provided with any suitable fastening devices to hold the meeting edges together. As shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the side edges are fastened together by springs cl and 62, respectively, the ends of the spring d being adapted to enter keepers d at the ends of the spring d", while in Figs. 2 and 4 the fastening medium is shown to consist of a series of eyelets f and hooks f, the

, eyelets being arranged along one of the meeting edges of the side opening and the hooks along the other' meeting edge. At the top and bottom of the side opening are eyelets g,

formed in the meeting edges thereof and passing through the eyelets g and f, and around the hooks f is a lace f to draw the meeting edges of the side opening together and secure them in their closed position. The style of fastening for the meeting edges of the side opening is not an important feature of the invention, nor are the means for stiffening or strengthening the leg portion, as any style of fastening and stiffening device can be used without departing from the nature of the invention.

The instep covering 7) is shaped and designed to cover the upper portion of the boot or shoe and at one edge of the side opening of the instep-covering is a draw-loop h and at the other end is a retaining-buckle i.

As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, one end of the draw-strap is connected to the bottom edge at the middle of one side of the instep-covering to correspond relatively to the position of the draw-loop and retaining-buckle, while the other end of the draw-strap is arranged to pass through the loop and buckle.

In Figs. 3 and- L I have shown one end of the retaining-strap m, to be connected to the middle of the lower edge of the instep-covering, at the opposite side thereof, to the side opening a, and the other end of the retaining-strap to be provided with a loop 0, through which passes the draw-strap p. In the use of the invention shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the retaining and draw straps are combined and the strap is passed under the shank of the shoe and then through the drawloop and buckle to draw together the meeting edges of the side opening of the instepcovering and cause the instep-covering to adhere closely to the upper portion of the boot or shoe and cover the lace-opening to prevent the ingress of snow, Water, or other foreign substances to the foot. The retaining or draw strap, in addition to confining the instep-covering to the boot or shoe, prevents the displacement of the legging when used for mounted purposes.

In making the legging I find it advisable to make the leg-covering and instep-covering of one continuous piece of material in order that there will be no seam in the leg portion to detract from the maximum strength of the material or wearing qualities of the leggings.

Having thus fully described my invention,

what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A legging consisting of a seamless leg portion having an opening at one side thereof, an instep-covering integrally formed with the lower end of the front of the leg portion, a draw-strap connected to one side of the leg portion, draw-strap-engaging means connected to the other opposite meeting edges of the side, the draw-strap being arranged to engage said means to confine the instep-covering to the foot and hold the lower end of the opposite meeting edges together, substantially as specified.

2. In a legging the combination of a leg portion and an instep-covering integrally formed therewith having a side opening extending from the top to the bottom of .the legging, a retaining-strap connected at one end to the lower edge of one side of the instep-covering and fitted at the other end with a loop, a drawstrap connected to the other side of the instepcovering and a loop and buckle connected to the lower end of the edges of the side opening, substantially as specified.
