INVENTOR WITNESSES ATTOR N EY ERNEST W. MAGKEY, OF MONTROSE, NEW YORK.
LEGGING'.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 7, 1917..
Application filed December 2, 1916. Serial No. 134,616.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EnNns'r WV. MAOKEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Montrose, in the county of W'estchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Leggings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved legging and the principal object of the invention is to provide a legging which may be formed in two sections, seamed at the back and releasably connected at the front, an improved type of connection between the releasable forward edges of the side sections being provided and also an improved type of protecting tongue. By providing the structure shown, the legging may be very easily and quickly laced and unlaced and further, an even lacing will be provided as after the legging is in place and the lacing tied, it will be evenly distributed throughout the height of the legging thus preventing undue pressure at one point and slack at another point. This improved structure will further provide means for securely connecting the tongue with one of the side portions and provide a tight closure when the legging is in place.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view showing the improved legging in side elevation,
Fig. 2 is a view showing the improved legging in front elevation, and
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view through the forward portion of the legging.
The legging is formed in-two sections 10 and 11 which are stitched together at the back and have their forward edges left free and provided with reinforcing strips 12 and 13, upper and lower binding strips 1 and 15 being also provided. A tongue 16 is secured between the reinforcing strip '13 and the free edge portion of the side section 11 and is of such length that when the legging is in place, this tongue will extend beneath the side section 10 as clearly shown in Fig.
3. This tongue will of course be the full length of the legging and when the legging is in place and secured will close the space between the free edge portions of the side sections and thus provide a closure which will prevent water from passing between the free edge portions of the side sections and further permit of a tight fitting legging without binding.
Then in use, this legging is put in place and the strap 17 passed beneath the shoe and secured by means of the buckle 18. The lacing 19 will be passed through the eye 20, a knot being provided at its inner end and will then be hooked about the hooks 21 and tied at the top of the logging. If the lacing should be tight at one point and loose at another, the lacing will gradually work to a point where it will be evenly distributed thus providing a good fit and preventing overpressure at any particular point. It should be further noted that by having the legging connected at the front instead of the side, there is less danger of the lacing catching upon anything and being released.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is A legging comprising a body having free edge portions, reinforcing strips extending along said free edge portions, a tongue carried by one free edge portion between its reinforcing strip and said edge portion and extending into the legging along the inner face of the other free edge portion of the body when the legging is in place on the leg of the wearer, said tongue being engaged by said reinforcing strip for substantially the full width of the reinforcing strip, and means for releasably connecting the free edge portions of the body.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ERNEST W. MAOKEY.
