Be it known that we, l'tIA'rHnw J. BURKEL and LoUis I). FosNo'r, citizens of the4 United States, and Vresidents of Aurora, county'of Kane, and: State of"Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valve-Spriiig-Lifting Devices; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exactdescription thereof, reference being had to theaccompanying drawings, and -to the letters of reference marked thereon, which Vform a part :of this specifica# tion.v
This invention relates to improvements in valve spring lifting devices and consists of the' matters `hereinafter described and more particularly pointed 'out inthe appended claims.
The object of the'invention is to produce a tool of the kind, thei aws of which are al ways maintained in parallel relation and which is'y capable of` a widerange of opening movement of the lifting jaws combined with a minimum span of movement of the operating handles and which capable of 'af maximuin of liftingpower with a'minimum of length of tool. 'Another `object of the invention is toprovide atool ofthe kind in which the j aws' are so arranged that the tool is readily `"capable of use in close quarters when parts adjacent the valve spring to vjbe operated upon stand iin the way of. direct access tothe spring.
In addition the novel tool comprises a minimumoff.v parts which may be produced with 'great economy both as' to cost ofmanufacturing the parts and asto `the facility and ease ofa'ssembly andpossesses otheradvantages which will appear as we proceed with nour specification.

Referring now to that embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawings: lO-lO indicate the opposed jaw members, each provided with a bifurcated jaw 11 adapted to embrace the valve stem and` having a flat part 12 for engagement beneath the valve spring, with a semi-circular upright shoule der 13 spaced back from the edge of the fiat part for embracing the' peripheral body of the spring.
The body 14 of each jaw member is a straight bar, made hollow, as shown, with depending side flanges 15. `The jaw proper 11 extends at an angle to the length of the body 14, so that the tool may be inserted for engagement with the valve spring at one side ofand back of any obstruction that'may interfere with direct access. The jaw, if desired, mayy of course be made to extend di- 're'ctly in line with the body 14. The -jaw members, when made as last described, may be stamped by means of the same forming die and even whenmade as shown in full lines may be` fabricated from t-he same blanks-two forming dies however being required.
The jaw members are connected together and maintained in parallel relation by means of. a lazy tongs 16, the ' elements 17, 17 `of which have fixed pivotal connection at their forward. ends to the bodies 14 nof the respective members 10, by means of transverse pins `18,A 18fixed in the flanges 15 `of said bodies, and movable pivotal connection at their rear ends with said bodies by means of transverse pins 19, 19 carried by said rear ends and mounted to slide in longitudinal slots 20 formed in said flanges. The elements of thelazy tongs are themselves pivoted together by means of a pin-or rivet 22.

Each is a flanged bifurcated bar, the bifurcations 24 of which embracethe sides of the bodies 14 of the jaw members Vas shown in `Figure 2. The bifurcations 24hav`e like fulcrum extensions 25, 26 vwhich are pivoted together on a transverse pin 27 and the short arms 28 of the levers are pivoted on the transverse pins 18, Y
bar 31 fixed in the other leven-the latch bar extending up through a suitable slot 32 in the lever body immediately back of the jaw members l0 andbeing preferably provided with a forwardly bent knurled finger piece 33 for use in releasing the latch. A coiled spring 34 connecting the latch bar to the lever on which itis pivoted acts to normally hold it in engagement with the bar 31.
llhe 'levers are made alike so that a single set of tools is required to make both. To this end, one of the fulcrum extensions 26 is offset towards the median plane of the lever so that it may receive, ina plane adjacent to it, the fulcrum extension ofthe other lever which is not thus offset.
llfrom an'inspection of the drawings,it is apparent that the power applied to the handles is greatly multiplied when applied by the short lever arms of said levers to open the jaw members and that this is made possible in a construction wherein the greatest span between the lever handles is not greater than will easily come within Vthe grip V of a hand of ordinary size. `Again,-
by reason of the location of the fulcrum 27 d' back of the `axis pin 22 of the lazy tongs, f the power is vapplied by the short arms-of the levers in lines at an angle closely. approximating a right angle to the lengthV of the jaw members, so that a maximum component of the actual power exerted by said arms is applied in opening said jaw members. Thus a tool of comparatively short length isl capable of great lifting power under the grip exerted by one hand.
In the manufacture o f the tool as heretofore has appeared only three blanks are required (eliminating the latch and spring). So that it manifestlyV may be made very cheaply. Other' advantages will be evident to those familiar with the art.
We claim as our invention :--V 1. A valvelifting device comprising two parallel jaw members, hand levers fulcrumed together between said jaw members near the rear ends of said jaw members and having short arms operatively connected tothe front ends of Ysaid jaw members, means' independent of said levers flexibly connecting said jaw members and adapted to maintain them in parallel relation, and
means for automatically locking said jaw members in several, varied, open positions.
2. A valve lifting device comprising two parallel jaw members, a lazy,V tongs connecting said jaw members and adapted to maintain them in parallel relation, and hand levers having integral fulcrum extensions pivoted together at a point between said jaw members andback of the axis of said lazy tongs, said Vhand levers having Y v ing said jaw members in several, varied 1 openv positions.V
