PENCIL SHARPENER.

To all whom t may con-cern:

Be it known that I, ALBERT L. COLE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Auburndale, in the county of Middlesex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lenlcil Sharpeners, of which the following is a. full, clear, and exact specification.

The object of this invention is the construction of a simple, inexpensive and convenient device for sharpening lead pencils. The preferred form of the device c-omprises a bottle, means for rotating it on a longitudinal axis, and a tubular stopper carrying the Sharpener, the stopper being easily removed when it is desired to empty the bottle of its accumulated shavings.

In the drawings forming part of this specification, Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a device illustrating the preferred form. of my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through the axial centre of the bottle and connected parts. Fig. 3 is an end view of the clamp by which the rotating means is connected with the bottle.

The bottle 1 is preferably of glass or other transparent material in order to render visible its accumulating contents; 2 is the supporting standard having arms 3, 4.-; 5 is the crank arm, and 6 is the removable stopper. I

The crank arm 5 is fixed upon the outer end of a short spindle T rotatable in a closed bearing 9 at the extremity of the arm 3, the inner end of the spindle carrying the clamping device consisting of two spaced hands 10 between which the base of the bottle 1 is thrust. The narrow edges of the hands 1() are curved inward somewhat, as at 11 in Fig. 3, in order to ensure the retention of the bo-ttle therein.

The arm 4 is provided with forks or open bearing 16 loosely enclosing more or less of the neck 17 to enable the bottle to be rotatalbly supported, while being capable of being easilyv lifted out therefrom and withdrawn from the hands whenever it is desired to` empty and lclean out or wash the bottle.

This is rendered necessary by the fact that the base 20 of the standard 2 is designed to be screwed down upon a desk or shelf, and hence the only way the bottle can be emptied of its contents is by its removal from the standard.

The Sharpener 15 is of substantially well known construction, and may have a ren movable blade, or the Sharpener itself can be replaced by a new one whenever it becomes dull from use.

l/Vhat I claim is:

A pencil Sharpener comprising a standard having two arms, one arm having a closed bearing and the other an open bearing, a spindle rotatable in said closed bearing and having a means of rotation at its outer end two spaced hands at its inner end, a transparent receptacle having a neck and an open mouth at one end, its other end being closed and fitting between said hands, said neck turning in said open bearing, said receptacle being externally threaded between said neck and mouth, a screw cap internally threaded to screw upon said threaded portion, the. screw cap being centrally apertured and having a tube projecting inwardly therefrom, and a pencil sharpening dev-ice carried by the inner portion of said tube, said hands having their lateral edges curved slightly toward each other whereby the closed end of said receptacle is securely held and forced to rotate with said spindle.
