3 Claims.
My invention relates to pencil sharpening devices, and has for its main objective to provide a simple pencil sharpener, in which the heart of the mechanism is a manually operative pencil sharpener incorporated in suitable structure to mechanize and fool-proof the entire sharpening operation.
Another object of my invention is to provide a pencil sharpener of the aforementioned character which has for its object an interchangeably removable sharpener head embraced in suitable mechanism or structure to mechanize the entire sharpening operation. The said sharpener may, of course, also be utilized for pointing or tapering dowels, and other similar wood items yet need not necessarily be restricted to pencil pointing or sharpening.
A further object of my invention is to provide in a pencil sharpener of the aforementioned character facilities for collecting the shavings therein and for disposal of the same.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a sharpener of the aforementioned character which will not mar or otherwise damage the body of the pencil or article being pointed or tapered.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a device of the aforementioned character which is simple and practical in construction, which is also efilcient for the purposes for which it may be used, and moreover, an article which is of such simple elemental structure as to warrant economical manufacture thereof in quantity production.
Other features, and objects, inherent in my invention will become, readily, apparent from an examination of the accompanying drawings, taking into consideration the ensuing description, wherein like symbols are utilized to designate like parts; and, in which,
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal cross-sectional view of one form of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a transversal section taken, substantially, on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view of the sharpener head construction utilized in connection with my device.
Fig. 4 is a front View of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a View similar to Fig. 3, fragmentary in nature, showing how the sharpener head is removably secured to the fixture for retaining the same interchangeably and removably.
Fig. 6 is an elevational view of another form of my invention, with a portion thereof broken in order to show the slight modifications of the forms illustrated in Figs. 1 to 5.
Fig. 7 is a top view of Fig. 6.
Fig. 8 is an end View of Fig. 7.
Referring to the various views, my invention is a sharpener or pointer, generally, designated 9, the pencil to be pointed being characterized by the numeral l0 and showing the completion of the operation in having produced the pointed end i l on the said pencil E0. The device comprising my invention consists of a transparent case is having a beaded portion l4, and a bushing portion 15 integral therewith. The bushing portion l5 acts as a guide for the pencil ll] causing it to be located properly within the sharpening or pointing recesses or confines of the sharpener head proper, generally, designated l2. The said case section l3 cooperatively abuts the remaining portion of the case structure It also made of transparent material such as lucite or any suitable plastic, the said case l6 being suitably bored out at l9 so as to be riveted at 20 to the stud 2i, the body of the said stud rotating in the bearing portion 29 of the support 28 which also has a base portion 38 for suitably securing the same by screws or other iastenings 3| to a surface for maintaining the entire unit rigidly supported.
The stud 2| is provided with a reduced threaded shank 22 which threadably engages the female thread H3 in the head portion 23 of a suitable handle 24, the said handle having at its other terminus a knob 25 confined rotatably thereon by virtue of rivet means 25 and 21. Within the casing I5 I secure, by a driving lit, the adapter 32 which has a reduced portion 44 so as to act as a stop or locating terminus for the sharpener head, generally, designated l2, positioning the same firmly, rigidly and in accurate position.
Ifhe said adapter 32 is provided with a chucking portion 36 having an opening 31 for clearance, and is made of resilient material so as to frictionally grip the sharpener head l2 when inserted therein, yet permitting its removal when subjected to slight pulling effort. The sharpener head proper is that well-known type, generally, designated l2, which consists of an elongated body 31' having a recessed slot consisting of a straight locating edge 4i] and an arcuate end 39 merging with the said straight edge 4!), for confining the cutter 38 and locating the same in the proper position, it being secured firmly in place by the binding screw 4|.
The cutter has a cutting edge 41 which is spaced a suitable distance to provide a chip clearance 48, so that the shavings which result from the rotation of the sharpener head l2 will be deflected away from the knife and not impair the efficient function thereof. The sharpener is also provided with a tapered opening 42 terminating in a reduced cylindrical bore 43 in order to permit proper pointing of a pencil or unit I!) inserted therein.
Referring to Fig. 2, it will be noted that the sharpener head, generally, designated l2, which is preferably to be used in connection with my invention, is provided with one straight side 45 and one angular side 46 so as to fool-proof the insertion thereof into the chucking portion 36, thus making it impossible to insert the sharpener in any but the right manner. The elements l3 and I6, and the adapter element 32, being transparent, permit a visual observation of the sharpening operation. The sharpening or pointing is performed by grasping the knob 25 and rotating it in a clockwise direction as shown in' Fig. 8; the pencil l being fed in gradually and carefully until a suitable point has been produced.
It is to be noted that in the adapter unit 32 I provide a reduced front forward section 33; which is also provided with drilled openings 35 to define the ends of the longitudinally slotted portions 34 and permit the peripheral edge 33 to possess a degree of flexure, so that the removal of the case I 3 when shavings are to be disposed of can be readily efiectuated, and the assemblage of the case I3 can also be readily eifectuated. The beaded portions l4 and I! are provided in order to facilitate the partition or separation of the case [3 when it is desired to remove the same from frictional and resilient engagement by the adapter 32. In actual operation when looking at Fig. 1, everything rotates except the pencil in, and the standard 28.
In Figs. 6, 7, and 8 I show a slightly modified form of my invention. In this particular instance, I provide a bushing portion 50, which is shorter than the one shown in Fig. 1, in order that a bushing 49 may be rotatably accommodated therein, the said bushing having a head on one end and a grooved portion interiorly at its other terminus, so as to receive a split Washer 52, thus confining the said bushing rotatably within the bushing portion 50, and yet preventing its removal until so desired, which operation can readily be eifectuated by virtue of the removal of the split washer 52. The operation of this construction is quite similar to the one shown in Figs. 1 to 5, namely, the pencil or article to be pointed It] is inserted, it will find'readily the conical opening 42 and will be fed in manually and gradually until a suitable pointing has been com pleted. Like, in the other instance, the only feature here is the bushing 5| which is mounted to function as a bearing, which causes the device to operate about the said bearing, the bearing engaging frictionally but with slight pressure, the article It! being pointed, and thus preventing the device 9 from marring the surface of the pencil in. This construction is deemed to be the ideal of perfection as between the two forms illustrated.
I believe I have herein described and illustrated, rather succinctly, the construction of my invention, and inasmuch as it is susceptible of modifications and improvements, I hereby reserve the right to all modifications and improvement coming within the scope and spirit of my invention, also all those improvements and modifications embraced suggestively in the accompanying drawings, as well as all those falling Within the purview of the foregoing disclosure; my invention to be limited by the subjoined claims.
Having thus described and revealed my invention, what I claim as novel, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
