HANDLE MOUNTED PENCIL SHARPENER Filed 00%. 20, 1965 INVENTORS FEA/vc/5 E. CHIP/WA? and MEL vy/v E, Cow/1E1? United States Patent 1 Claim. c1. 1211-1 This application is a substitute application for our application filed May 1, 1964, Serial No. 364,081, now abandoned.
This invention relates to improvements in tools for carpenters, mechanics and the like, and more particularly to provide means with tools for sharpening pegs or pencils while the carpenter or mechanic is working.
Normally, when a carpenter or mechanic is working and breaks the point of his pencil, he must either leave the work site or must sharpen his pencil with a knife or a tool which is intended for another purpose.
Accordingly, it is an object of the present invention to provide a pencil type sharpening means for pegs or pencils in combination with a commonly used tool.
Another object of the present invention is to provide the foregoing in which the pencil type sharpener is housed within the tool handle.
The foregoing and other objects annd advantages will become more apparent to those skilled in the art by referring to the following description and the accompanying drawings wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a side elevation of a tool with a portion thereof cut away to illustrate the invention,
FIGURE 2 is an enlarged sectional view of the cut away portion of FIGURE 1,
FIGURE 3 is a sectional view taken on line 33 of FIGURE 2,
FIGURE 4 is a perspective View of a pencil sharpener in accordance with the present invention.
Referring now to the drawings, a tool, in this instance a hammer 10, has a head 11 connected to one end of a handle 12. The other end of handle 12 opposite from the head 11 has an axial recess 13 for receiving and housing a pencil sharpener 14. The recess 13 is rectangular in cross-section as shown in FIGURE 3, and is of a depth greater than the length of the pencil sharpener 14, which is also rectangular in cross-section, and so dimensioned as to snugly fit within the recess. As shown in FIGURE 2, the bottom of the recess 13 is flat with the inner end of the pencil sharpener 14 seated thereagainst and its outer end spaced inwardly from the terminal end of the handle 12.
The pencil sharpener 14 is fixed in the recess 13 of handle 12 by a screw 15 which extends through the inner end of the pencil sharpener 14 longitudinally into the handle 12, however, it should be readily understood that any adaptable well known means may be used such as cementing or peening the ends of the recess.
The pencil sharpener 14 has a receiver or sharpening chamber 16 f0 rreceiving a pencil 19 to be sharpened. Chamber 16 has a slot in one side to provide communi- 3,294,067 Patented Dec. 2'7, 1966 'ice cation with a shavings chamber 17. It is to be noted that the screw 15 extends through the bottom of chamber 17. A blade 18 is fixed in the sharpener 14 adjacent the slot for sharpening a pencil 19 when it is rotated in chamber 16.
It should therefore be readily understood that a carpenter using the hammer 10 on a job has a pencil sharpener 14 available at all times. By virtue of the pencil sharpener being entirely contained within the recess 13 and with its outer end spaced from the terminal end of the handle 12, it is apparent that the pencil sharpener can in no way become damaged should the hammer 10 be dropped.
While certain novel features of my invention have been shown and described and are pointed out in the annexed claim, it will be uderstood that various omissions, substitutions and changes in the forms and details of the device illustrated and in its operation can be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In combination with a hand held tool comprising:
(a) a handle,
(b) a recess in the handle extending longitudinally inwardly from the free terminal end thereof,
(0) a pencil sharpener complemental in shape to said recess positioned therein with the inner end of the pencil sharpener seated on the bottom of said recess,
(d) fastener means extending through the inner end of said pencil sharpener longitudinally into said handle, and
(e) said recess being of a depth greater than the length of said pencil sharpener, such that the outer end of said pencil sharpener is spaced inwardly from the terminal end of said handle, whereby to be wholly contained within said recess in order to obviate damage thereto wherein,
(f) said recess is of a uniform rectangular cross section throughout its length and having a fiat bottom,
(g) said pencil sharpener having a chamber for receiving shavings extending lengthwise thereof, with its bottom at the inner end of said pencil sharpener, and
(h) said fastener means extending through the bottom of said chamber.
