- Pencil Sharpener.
' No. 240,520. Patented Aril 26,1881.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY M. JONES, OF MERI'DEN, CONNECTICUT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters `Patent No. 240,520, dated April 26, 1881.
Application filed October 4, 1880.
improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The object of my invention is to provide a device for sharpening pencils in as perfect a manner as is possible.
Figure 1 is a perspective view, and Fig. 2.
represents a detail.
A is a case in which are arranged a cutter, C, an inclined bearing-surface, B, and afpressure-spring, D. The slot E is for the purpose of inserting the pencil, and the slot F for letting out the shavings. The cutter C is fastened to the case with a screw.' One end of' low the edge of the cutter, enough to make it takeo a shaving when the pencil is drawn down the inclined bearing-surface over the cutter. The roughened surface or portion G on the'cutting-blade is for the purpose of rubp (Model.)
bing the lead point of the pencil to bring it to a fine sharp point. This portion of the cutter or cutting-blade is cut similar to a iile.
To sharpen the pencil, insert the end in the slot E in the case A and push it forward over the cutting-blade C, and, as it is forced forward, it will raise the pressure-spring D, which will let it move up the inclined bearing-surface B to the stop or end of theineline,
above the cutting-blade C. Then, as the pencil is drawn back and down the inclined bearing-surface, with the pressure-spring D bearing down upon it and forcing the pencil against the cutting-blade C, it will cause the cuttingblade to take off a shaving, which will pass out of the slot F. The continuous moving of the pencil forward and backward, and at the same time turning it around in the lingers, so as to bring all of its surfaces to the cuttingblade, will sharpen it to a point in the center on the same pitch as the pitch of the inclined bearing-surface.
What I claim is- As a new article of manufacture, a pencil- Sharpener consisting of a case, A, having slots' E and F, pressure-spring D, inclined bearingsurface B, and cutting-blade C, having roughened portion G, all substantially as set forth, and for the purposes described.
HENRY M. JONES. Witnesses:
