This invention relates to improvements in dustproof pencil sharpeners having ample space for pencil shavings and dust including a collecting receptacle in combination with a baffle to prevent the spilling of the shavings and the dust through the sharpener while it is being handled and used by the operator or user thereof.

It is a particular object of this invention to provide a unique combination of a frusto-conical hopper and bafile with an attachable and detachable shavin s and dust collecting receptacle.

It is an object of this invention to provide a combined hopper and shield baffle having a pencil sharpener therein in combination with a collecting receptacle for the shavings and dust in which the receptacle is detachably connected to the pencil sharpener.

Other objects and advantages will be revealed in connection with the detailed description of the accompanying drawings which constitute a part of this specification.

Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of my new dust-proof pencil sharpener.

Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view of my sharpener taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.

The drawing is merely illustrative of my invention and is not definitive thereof except as pointed out in the subjoined claim. i

In the drawin and specification the reference characters identify the details of my particular pencil sharpener.

The pencil sharpener I is provided with a main tubular cylinder 2 having a cap 3 preferably having a screw-threaded connection 4 with the main cylinder 2. provided with a detachable receptacle 5' having V telescopic relation with the main cylinder 2 and is also provided with a bottom wall 6 and an an nular cap rim I having preferably a screwthreaded connection 8 with the cylinder 2. The receptacle 5 also constitutes a tubular cylinder and extends upwardly within the cylinder 2 beyond its mid-portion to provide an amply large removable'receptacle for'shavings and dust. The upper end of the cylinder or tube 2 is provided with a fixed apertured closure plate 9. The closure plate 9 has a centrally located aperture larger than an ordinary pencil (not shown) adapted to receive a tubular pencil guide II.

The combined pencil sharpener and hopperbaiile constitutes a replaceable unit R.

This unit R comprises a hollow frusto-conical shell I2 with a cylindrical tubular portion I3 having a circular closure I4. The closure plate It may be secured to the cylindrical tube I3 by brazing, soldering, 'or welding. A pencil sharpener element I5 comprised of a tubular pencil guide II and a tapered portion I5 is secured in a pencil aperture in the closure I4 by screw threads IS. The tapered frusto-conical portion I5 including the blade slot I1 and the blade I8 extend downwardly into the frusto-conical hopper-baifie l2 and terminate substantially flush with the lower edge thereof. The blade I8 is secured to the tapered portion I5 by screws 20.

5, 6, 1 must be removed from the cylinder 2 and the unit R may then be guided to position in the tube or cylinder 2 and secured in position by screws 20.

It is noted in Figure 1 that the major portion of the tube 2 is reinforced by the telescopic receptacle- 5 which is removably received and is telescopically guided into and out of the tube 2.

In order to sharpen a pencil (not shown) the cap 3 must be removed from the tube 2 and the pencil inserted and sharpened in the usual manner. Instead of grasping the pencil sharpener I5 directly the tube 2 is grasped in one hand and relative rotation in the proper direction of the pencil and sharpener sharpens the pencil. It appears to be self-evident that more accurate sharpening could be accomplished by manipulat- The lower end of the cylinder 2 .is

The shavings and dust from the pencil are guided by the hopper-bafiie I2 into the receptacle 5.

If the device is tipped sidewise and even. upside down the contents of the receptacle 5 merely slides along the receptacle and tube 2 to a posi- 3 tion back of the hopper-baffle l2 and does not spill out because of the presence of the hopperbaffle.

It is an important result that the dust does not under normal use, includin handling, tipping or even carrying it about in a, garment pocket, spill out of the sharpener.

The construction disclosed in Figure 5 is identical with that disclosed in Figure 1, except that the tubular cylinder 20 constitutes united cylinders 2| and 22. The cylinders are preferably connected by a screw-threaded portion 29. The lower cylinder 22 is preferably provided with an inwardly offset annular portion 24, on which the threads are formed, whereby the connection or joint may be smooth or substantially flush on its outside of the sharpener construction. In this modification, as shown in Figure 5, the tube is only reinforced at and about the connection, and is not reinforced; and is not reinforced over its entire bottom portion, as shown in the construction of Figure 1.

In Figure 5, the cylinder 22 constitutes the removable receptacle and comprises substantially one-half of the tubular cylinder 20-2 i. The unit R and the section 21 may be readily assembled and secured together, since the unit R is longer than the section 2 l.

The combined pencil sharpener and hopperbaifie unit constitutes another important feature of my invention, since this unit i detachably secured to the upper end of the cylinder 2. When the blade l8 becomes dull, the whole unit can be replaced including a new blade.

The hopper-bafiie E2 of Figs. 1 and 5 may be omitted.

As shown in Figures 6 and 7, the blade 18 may have a guard or shaving breaker in the form of a plate 28 mounted over the top of same. The forward edge 21 of the plate 28 breaks up the curled wood shavings as the blade 18 removes same from the penci. The screws Iii-I9 of Figures 1 and 5 are here replaced by longer screws 29-29 having knurled heads.

Figure 8 shows a modified form of sharpener 30; adapted for use in either the cylinder 2 of Figure 1, or the cylindrical sections 2l22 of Figure 5 having a solid base 81 shaped like an inverted pyramid. Theneck 32 rising from the base is closed by a, suitable removable cap 33. After removal of this cap the neck can be fitted in an opening in the top of a cylindrical cover 34 which is interiorly threaded for connection to a receptacle 35. Screws (not shown) may be passed through the top of the cover into holes 36 in the sharpener and below the neck.

Having fully disclosed my novel invention and the operation thereof, what I claim is:

A dust-proof pencil sharpener comprising a tubular receptacle, said receptacle being formed with upper and lower sections detachably connected together, the upper section including a closure member for the receptacle, said closure member having a central aperture therethrough, a, pencil sharpener mounted in the upper end of said receptacle and including a tubular portion projecting through said aperture in said closure member, a hollow frusto-conical blade-carrying portion extending downwardly from said tubular portion, said blade-carrying portion having a slot therethrough, and a blade mounted along one edge of said slot, and a hollow frusto-conical baffle member surrounding said frusto-conical blade-carrying portion and attached to said tubu-. lar portion, said frusto-conical member serving to prevent dust within the receptacle from escaping therefrom through said tubular portion, said pencil sharpener and said baffle member being formed as a, unit, said unit being detachably connected to said closure member, and a cap member detachably engaged with the top portion of said receptacle and enclosing said tubular portion.
