LOUIS MYERS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO THE TRAUT & HINE MANUFAC- TURING COMPANY, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OF CON- NECTICUT.
Specification 01. Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 8, 1916.
Original application filed December 22, 1913, Serial No. 808,147. Divided and thisapplication filed March 9, 1915. Serial No. 13,162.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS MYERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at the f cuttings from the pencil I lfix to'the yoke 5.
borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, .city and State of New York,.have invented -'certain new and useful Improvements in Pencil-Sharpening Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in pencil sharpening machines and has for its object to provide a pencil sharpener of the planetary type having a revolving shield for preventing-the scattering of the cuttings from the pencil.
The following is a description of an embodiment of my invention, reference being had to. the accompanying drawings, in which,-
Figure 1 shows the cutting mechanism of a pencil sharpener of the planetary type partly in section and partly in side elevation. Fig. 2 shows a section of a portion of the same on the line 22, Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to thedrawings, 1 is a standard having an upper plate 2 and a laterally projecting arm 3. Connected to the upper plate 2 is a stationary gear 4. Journaled upon the arm 7 3 and within the gear 4 is a yoke or carrier 5 which carries two cutters or milling devices 6-6, each of which has a shaft provided at its upper end with a gear 7 these gears meshing with the gear 4. The upper end of the yoke 5 carries a disk 8 having gear teeth 9 with which engage a gear 10 mounted upon a shaft 11 carried by the standard 1 and actuated by a handle 12. As the handle is revolved, the yoke 5 is caused to revolve on its axis and the milling devices by reason of the engagement with the gears 7 with the gear 4 revolve also upon their own axes so as to have a planetary movement. The pencil to be sharpened is inserted through the opening 13 through the gear 4 and plate 2 so as to comcin contact with the revolving milling devices which act upon it to cut a point thereon.
14 is a gravity actuated clutch for the pencil..
In order to preventthe scattering of the downward direction to any convenient receptacle' beneath. In order to make the cutters v1sible,'I make this sheath of transparent material such as celluloid, This sheath 'is secured to the yoke by the screws 16."
.'The operation of the device is obvious. When the pencil is placed in position and the handle is turned the cutters act upon the pencil to sharpen it and the cuttings are caught by the sheath and discharged at its lower end.
This application is a division of my application Serial No. 808,147, filed December 22, 1913.
As will be evident to those skilled in the art my invention permits of various modifications without departing from the spirit thereof or the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a pencil sharpening machine, the combination of a support, a frame mounted thereon and revolving about a vertical axis, a cutter in said frame and revolving relatively thereto, a sheath secured to said revolving frame and surrounding said cutter.
.2. In a pencil sharpening machine, the combination of a support, a frame mounted thereon and revolving about a vertical axis, a cutter in said frame and revolving relatively thereto, a sheath secured to said re- LOUIS MYERS.
