To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, Fnnnnnion BAUMANN, Jr., a citizen of the United States, and a resident of East Orange, Essex County, New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lCutting Machines, of which the following is a description.
This invention relates to cutting machines and more particularly to motor driven machines adapted to cut cloth and other material.
An object of the invention is to provide a construction characterized by compactness and simplicity and in which the several parts are arranged in the most advantageous manner so that the view of the work will not be obstructed during the cutting operation.
Another object of the invention is to provide a combined support and guard for the cutting means.
Another object of the invention is to provide a sharpening device arranged to be conveniently placed in operative position to sharpen the edge of the cutting means without nicking the same and to be maintained in inoperative position when not in use.
Another object of the invention is to provide a switch for controlling` the motor, so mounted adjacent to the handle that it may be actuated by the operator while grasping the handle.
The invention consists further in details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter more particularly described and claimed.

ln the embodiment of the invention here illustrated, there is provided a base plate 1 on which is mounted a narrow vertically arranged support 2having a circular knife 8 or cutting means rotatably mounted thereon at the side thereof and parallel thereto. The support 2 constitutes a housing enclosing a gear 4 which is rigidly secured to interposed between the knife and housing and so mounted that it extends beyond the inner side of the housing thereby slightly spacing the knife away therefrom.
The base plate 1 is provided with a slot 5 through which the lower portion of the knife rotates. The support 2 constitutes a fixed guard projecting beyond the knife for substantially three-fourths of its periphery. The portion of the support 2 between horizontal planes passing through the center of the knife and its lower edge is cut away, as indicated at 6, exposing a minimum of the cutting portion of the knife. This constitutes a guardl 7 providing the maximum of protection against accidents.
The rear portion of the housing 2 is provided with a collar 8 enclosing a bearing 9 of a motor 10 and secured to the motor casing 11 by means of screws 12, supporting the motor and securing it in position to rotate the knife. A motor shaft 13 extends axially of the motor and is provided at one end with a bevel gear 14 meshing with the gear L and enclosed by the housing 2. The motor is arranged with its axis projecting rearwardly at an acute angle to the base eX- posing the top of the knife 3 and'guard 7 and with the upper surface of the casing 11 substantially tangential to the upper portions of the support and knife whereby the work in front of the knife is exposed to the view of the operator at all times.
An angle piece 15 mounted upon the upper part of the support 2 by means of a vertically extending` slot 16 in a supporting member 17 for a-sharpening device and adjusting screws 18 extending into the slot adjustably supports the member 17. The member 17 has a vertical tube 19 in which is rotatably mounted a shaft 2O provided at its lower end with a fork 21 adjacent t-o the knife. Supported within this fork upon suitable bearings and on a common axis extending transversely to the plane of the knife is a pair of independently rotatable grindingstones or elements 22 spaced from each other and arranged upon the opposite sides of the edge of the knife, the guard 7 being cut away as indicated .at 23 to allow the stones to engage the knife. The fork constitutes av unitary mounting for said stones or grindin elements. The shaft 20 is supported in tu e 19 by means of a pin 24 secured thereto andl engaging the upper edge of the tube.
In order to hold the stones parallel with and spaced from the knife durino the cutting operation, the upper edge of the tube 19 is provided with a notch 241a in which the pin 24 is adapted to ride, the notch and pin being so arranged that the stones will be out of engagement with the knife when the pin is in the lowest lportion of the notch.
Interposed between the member 17 and the transversely into engagement with the opposite sides of vthe edge of the rotating knife sharpening the same. When the shaft 20 is released the spring 25 draws the pin downwardly in the notch, t-he engagement of the pin with the inclined portions of the notch rotating the shaft tomove the stones to inoperative position and to hold them inthat position.
The sharpening device can be easily manipulated to sharpen the knife whenever desired, by swinging the stones horizontally or transversely to the plane of the knife around a vertical axis, bringing the edge of one stone into engagement with one side of the knife and the edge of the other with the other side of the knife. Since the stones are not moved vertically above the knife but are always maintained at opposite sides of the knife and overlapping it there is no danger of the stones engaging the extreme outer edge of the knife thereby nicking the same as in constructions in which the stones are raised and lowered. As the knife wears down the sharpening devicecany be adjusted vertically by means of the screws 18 and the slot 16 to bring it to proper position relatively to the edge of the knife.
The inclination of the motor casing is such that a handle 27 may be secured to or project from the rear end of the motor casing in a most convenient position for manipulation and without obstructing the view of the cutter. In the present instance the handle 27 is secured to project from the rear end of the casing by means of a connecting member 28. The handle is substantially horizontal and parallel with the base and mounted for convenient manipulation. The support 2, knife, motor casing and handle are united ina compact way to provide a well balanced cutting machine which can be easily manipulated without obstructing the view. y
Mounted upon the inner end of the handle between the handle and the motor casing is a switch housing or casing 29 having at one side a plug element 30 connectable. with a source of power and at the opposite side a v vertically movable switch lever 31 extending transversely to the axis of the handle and movable vertically for controlling the motor circuit through conductors 32. rIhe handle 27 and lever 3l are so arranged that the lever 31 can be actuated by the thumb while the handle is grasped by the hand. In the present const-ruction also the plug element and switch are combined in a single casing whereby the parts are simplified and the number of lead wires to the motor is reduced.
It is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the embodiments and features specifically shown and described herein, but such embodiments and features are subject to changes and modifications wit-hout any departure from the spirit of the invention.
Having now described the invention, what is claimedr as new and it is desired to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows:
1. In a device of the character described, a base plate, a support thereon, cutting means rotatably mounted on said support, a motor therefor having a casing with its axis projecting rearwardly at such an angle as to leave the view of the cutting mea-ns by the operator unobstructed and the prolongation of said axis intersecting the axis of the cutting means, a bevel gear transmission between said motor aXis and said cutting means, and a handle projecting ,from the rear end of said casing and spacedfrom said cutting` means at least a distance substantially equal to the length of said motor.
2. In a device of the character described, a support, cutting means movably mounted thereon and a grinding element arranged when in inoperative position substantially parallel with and overlapping said cutting means and swingable transversely to the plane of the cutting means into engagement therewith.
3. In a device of the chaacter described, a support, cutting means movably mounted thereon, and a sharpening device comprising grinding elements arranged substantially parallel with and overlapping opposite sides of said cutting meanswhen in inoperative position and swingable transversely to the plane of the cutting means to bring said elements into simultaneous engagement with said cutting means.
4C. In a device of the character described, a support, cutting means movably mounted thereon and a sharpening device comprising elements overlapping the sides of said cutting means when in inoperative position and simultaneously swingable about a common aXis and transversely to the plane of the cutting means into engagement with the opposite sides of said cutting means.
5. In a device of the character described,
a support, cutting means movably mounted thereon and a sharpening device comprising elements mounted on an axis extending transversely of said cutting means and movable laterally about an axis at an angle to said first axis into engagement with said cutting means.
6. In a device of the character described, a support, cutting means movably mounted on said support and a sharpening device having grinding elements overlapping said cutting means when in inoperative position and movable about a common axis from said inoperative position transversely to the plane of the cutting means into simultaneous engagement With said cutting means.
7. In a device of the character described, a support, cutting means movably mounted on said support and a sharpening device comprising grinding elements overlapping opposite sides of said means When in inoperative position and a unitary mounting therefor movable to cause said elements to move laterally to simultaneously engage said means.
8. In a device of the character described, a support, cutting means movably mounted on said support and a sharpening device comprising grinding elements overlapping and substantially parallel With the cutting means when in inoperative position, a mounting therefor rotatable to cause said elements to move laterally to engage the cuttino means and means tending to maintain said elements in inoperative position.
9. In a device of the character described, a support, cutting means movably mounted on the support and a sharpening device comprising grinding elements normally overlappingsaid cutting means When in inoperative position and movably transversely to the plane of the cutting means about a common axis into simultaneous engagement With said cutting means and means tending to maintain said elements in inoperative position.
10. In a device of the character described,
a support, cutting means movably mounted on the support, a member provided With a tubular portion, a shaft rotatably mounted in said tubular portion and terminating in a fork, grindingelements mounted on said fork, overlapping said cutting means When in inoperative position and movable from inoperative position transversely of the plane of the cutting means into engagement vvith the cutting means upon rotation or' the fork and means tending to move said elements out oi engagement With the cutting means into inoperative position.
11. A sharpening device comprising a supporting member, a mounting rotatably mounted on said member and grinding elements supported by said mounting on an axis at right angles to the axis of movement of the mounting whereby said elements may be swung about an axis parallel to their planes.

A sharpening device comprising a supporting member, a mounting rotatable thereon, grinding means supported by said mounting'and movable into engagement With a cutting means upon relative rotation of the mounting and means comprising a notch and a pin Working in said notch and a spring to move said grinding means out of engagement with said cutting means into inoperative position When released.
13. A sharpening device comprising a supporting member having a tubular portion, a mounting comprising a shaft rotatably mounted in said tubular portion, grinding elements upon said mounting movable into engagement with a cutting means upon rotation of said mounting and means comprising` a cooperating notch and' pin upon the tubular portion and shaft and a spring interposed between the supporting member and mounting for maintaining said sharpening device in inoperative position.
