To all whom it may concern:
lic it known that l. lVlLLIAn J. Nnsrr'r, a citizen of the l'rnited States of America, residing at Los Angeles, county of Los Angeles, State of California, have invented a certain new and useful Heel-Cutting Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact-description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to heel cutting apparatus, more particularly to improvements in the heel cutting apparatus which is disclosed in in v latent No. 1,178.176, dated April 4, 1916, and in my Patents Nos. 1,109,130, 1,109,137, and 1,109,139, dated Sept. 1, 1914, and in my Patent No. 1,170,178, dated Feb. 1, 1 916.
One object 0f the invention is to simplify and perfect the apparatus and make it more practical and commercial. f
A further object of the invention is to make the apparatus compact and convenient to operate, light in weight, easy and smooth running, aud to enable the operator to work quickly and produce good results.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved rmeans for adjusting the pulley for the band saw.
lith the above and other objects in view which will be apparent to those skilled in the art the invention may be said to consist in the provision of the novel and advantageous features and in the novel and improved construction, arrangement, and combination of parts and devices as will appear from the following description of the preferred construction embodying the invention, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a front elevational view of the apparatus; Fig. 2 is a partly broken side elevational view of the apparatus; Fig. 3 an enlarged broken view of the apparatus taken' on the line of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a plan view of the same; Fig. is a broken sectional view taken on the line of Fig. 4; Fig. 6 is a broken sectional view taken on the line 6 6 of Fig. 4; Fig. 7 is an enlarged broken sectional view taken on the line 7-7 of Fig. 1; Fig. S is an enlarged broken sectional view taken on the line 8 8 of Fig. 1; Fig. 9 is a sectional view taken on the line 9--9 of Fig. 7; and
Fig. .10 is a broken sectional view taken on the line 10-1() of Fig. 7.
As shown in the drawings, the frame of the apparatus consists of the upright support or post 11 about which extends th bowed portion 12.
The shelf 13 has its rear part secured by screws 14 to the lower part of the bowed portion 12 of the frame, and on said shelf 13 is mounted the platform l5 which has on its underside the dovetail guide 16 which is slidably fitted in a corresponding guideway 'in the shelf 13. y In a dovetail guideway 17 in the platform 15 and in the lateral extension A 15 of the platform is fitted the transversely movable table 18, and on a pivot 19 on the upper part of the table 18 is mounted the plate 20 which carries the heel clamping means and is adjustable angularly to the cutter or band saw 21.
The heel clamping` means preferably consists of the lower plate 22 which is suitably secured to the side of the plate 20, and the.
upper plate 23 which is suitably secured to the lever 24: said plates 22 and 23 being disposed in substantially the same vertical plane and having the adjacent edge portions thereof curved and adapted to it in the crease between the heel seatand the heel of the shoe 26. The lever 24 has its forward end provided with the handle 27, and it has its rear end mounted on the pivot 28 between the upright lugs 29 onvthe rear vpart 0f the plate 20. The plates 22 and 23 are provided with a plurality of spaced lateral projections 30 which have thereon the pins or teeth 31 which are adapted to grip the heel of the shoe 26 but have their pointed ends terminating short of the curved edges 25 so as not to interfere with the latter being quickly placed in the crease of the shoe 26. The flever 24 preferably makes tight frictional contact with the lugs 29 so that said lever does-not drop down froln its raised position.
The means for operating the platform 15 consists of the angular lever 32 which is mounted on the piv-ot 33 carried by the downward extension 34 of the shelf 13; said lever 32 having at one end the handle 35 and having at its other end the pivot 36 to which is connected one end of the curved link 37 which latter has its other end connected to the pivot 38 on the side of the platform 15.
' erly; and a guard 74 is suitably arranged The means for adjusting and locking in adjusted position the transversely movable table 18 consists of the angular lever 39 which is mounted on the pivot 40 on the extension 15 of the platform 15, and which lever is provided at one end thereof with the handle 41 and at the other end thereof with the projection or pin 42 which latter passes through the arc shaped slot 43 in the extension 15 and is provided with a roller 44 disposed in the straight slot 45 in the table 18. The lever 39 is provided with ears 47 between which on the pivot 46 is mounted the latch 48 which extends through the slot 49 in the lever 39 and has `one end thereof provided with teeth which are adapted to t in the notches 50 which are provided in.
the plate 51 which latter is suitably secured to the underside of the extension 15. A spring is suitably connected to the lever 39 and to the latch 48 to move the latch 48 and normally lock the latter in position in engagement with the plate 51.
The means for adjusting and locking in adjusted position the plate 20 consists of the lateral extension or arm 53 which is provided on the plate 20 and which has thereon the ears 54 ,between which on the pivot 55 is mounted the latch 56 which latter is providedlwith teeth adapted to fit ill the notches 57 provided in the arc-shaped end of the table 18. A spring 58 is suitably connected to the arm 53 and to the latch 56 to move the latch 56 and normally lock the. latter in position in engagement with the table 18. An abutment or stop 59 is suitably mounted on the extension 15 to limit the movement of the arm 53.
The post 11 has thereon the stub shaftA 60 on which is mounted the wheel 61 around which and the pulley 62, which latter .is
adjustably mounted on the upper part ofv the bowed portion 12, passes the band saw 21. The wheel 61 is connected by the key 63 to the sleeve 64, and the shaft 60 is conl nected by the key 65 to the bushing 66, and
A suitable brush 73 is mounted on the bowed portion 12 and contacts with the wheel 61 toy clean the latter of waste particles which would otherwise be interposed between the wheel 61 and the band saw 21 and prevent the latter from operating propto shield the operator from contact with the wheel 61 and pinion 69.
The pulley 62 is mounted on the shaft 75 which is mounted on the pivots 76 which are mounted on the tubular side extensions 77 which are provided on one end portion of the armY 78 and are slidably fitted on the guides 79 which latter are secured to the bowed portion 12, and to the other end portion of the arm 78 is connected the thumbscrew 80 which passes through the shaft 75 and can be turned to move the shaft 75 toward or from the arm 78 to adjust the tilt of the pulley 62. A post 81 is threaded to screw in the bowed portion 12, and it has a head 82 fitted inl a socket 83 in the arm.,78 so that it can be turned 'by the handwheel 84 to raise or lower the arm 78 andconsequently raise or lower the shaft 75 and the pulley 62 to adjustthe tension of the band saw 21. The pivots 76 are preferably threaded to screw inthe lugs 85 which are provided on the extensions 77, and they are provided with grooves 86 so that they can be turned by a screw driver to adjust them and thereby adjust the shaft 75 and pulley 62 horizontally.
A fan or air blower 87 is arranged to remove the waste particles from the work, and is preferably operatively connected to the pulley 62. As shown, the air blower 87 consists of the radial blades 88 arranged in the box or casing '89'which is provided with the intake opening 90 and with the discharge opening or nozzle y91. The housing 89 is suitably attached to the shaft 75,. and the blades 88 and the. pulley 62 are mounted fast on the sleevev 92 between which and the bushing 93 mounted fast on the shaft 75 a re interposed a plurality of balls 94 which latter are arranged in suitable raceways which are provided in the sleeve 92 and bushing 93. i
A suitable duct 95 is mounted on the post 11 to carry the waste particles or refuse to a heap or -suitable receptacle.
The band saw'21 passes through the guide 96 which is mounted on one side of the bowed portion 12 of the frame, and it passes through the guide 97 provided on an arm 98 which is adjustably mounted on the post 99 on the other sider of the bowed portion 12 of the frame, and it also passes through the adjustable guide 100 which is suitably secured to thev shelf 13. An electric switch 101 for the motor 71 is mounted on the post 11.
From the foregoing the operation and advantages of the improved heel cutting apparatus will be understood by those skilled in the art. It will be seen that when the motor 71 is operated to drive the wheel 61 which drives the band saw 21, and the heel of the shoe is gripped by the clamping amount that is .to be cut off 'of the heel of the shoe 26, whereupon the latch 48 is released to engage the notches 50 andlock the table 18 in the adjusted position. If a straight cut of the heel is to be made the arm 53 of the plate 20 is moved to position against the stop 59, and the angular lever 32 is moved to operate the platform 15 and thereby effect'jmovement of the table 18 and plate 20 thereon to move the heel past the band saw 21 to have the latter cut away a part of the heel. When itis desired to make an angular cut of the heel the latch 56 is moved out of the notches 57 and then the arm 53 is moved to turn the plate 2O horizontally on the table 18 and thus move the latter until it makes the desired angle with the band saw 21, whereupon the latch 56 is released to engage the notches 57 and lock the plate 20 in the adjusted position. The band saw 21 can be adjusted by turning the thumbscrewSO to give any desired tilt to the pulley 62, the-screw post 81 can be turned to raise or lower the shaft 75 and consequently the ulley 62, and the pivots 76 can be adjuste to effect horizontal adjustment of the shaft 75. The blower 87 causes a blast of air to removethe waste particles from the work.
I claim In heel cutting apparatus, the combination of a frame, guides thereon, an arm provided with a socket and having side exten.- sions slidably fitted on said guides, adjustable pivots mounted on said side extensions, a shaft mountedy on said' pivots, a thumbscrew passing through the shaft and adjustably connected to said arm, and a threaded post provided with a handwheel, said post adjustably mounted on the frame and provided with a head rotatably fitted in said socket, substantially as and for the purpose set.forth.
