This invention relates to certain novel improvements in power driven planes has for its principal object the provision of an improved construction of this character which will be highly etlicient in use and economical in manufacture.
Among the several objects of the invention is the provision of a plane of `this character which is electrically operated for planing or EO smooth finishing a surface of wood o-r the like by a planeioperated in a horizontal plane from a vertically disposed operating mechanism thereby to more effectively accomplish the work of a plane of this type.
A still further obj ect of the inventien re- Vsides in the novel arrangement for adjusting the plane cutting mechanism'in a proper position for effective operation upon thek work.
A still further object of the invention re- 20 sides in the simplicity of arrangement of parts which afford expeditious assembly of the several parts making up the device.

The invention consists in the novel combi- 35 nation and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.

To accomplish the many objects of this invention I provide a power drivenplane which includes a basev on which a body 11 is vmounted. This body 11 includes a sleeve 12 of a split type structure for reasons hereinafter set'fo-rth.' This sleeve 12 adjacent the vsplit end 13 is provided with oppositely disposed lateral ears 14 lconnected-togetherby means of a screw or bolt 15 wherebythe sleeve willbe clamped about a motor housing 16 of 1930. serial No. 449,248.
a motorl( of electrical construction including an armature 18 having its shafts 19 and 20 j ourna-led in suitable Ibearings 21. s The motor 17 is arranged in an inverted position so that the shaft 20 thereof will project downwardly and eXteriorly of the housing 1G. The motor 17 may be of any approved structure and is connected in circuit with a suitable source of electric` energy by means of conductor wire 22 in which is incorporated a switch 23 of any approved construction. The motor housinglG is mounted within the sleeve 12 and clamped therein by means of a screw 15.
Referring to Fig. 5 of the drawings, it will be seen that an edge portion 2-1 of the motor housing is provided with a cam edge 25 adapt- '.ed to engage pin 26 supported by the body 1l. This arrangement is such that by relieving the clamped condition between the sleeve 12 andvfthe motor housing 16 the motor may be elevated orV lowered vertically for reasons hereinafter set forth. This is accomplishedv by rotating the housing 16 so that the cam edge 25 will ride upon the pin 26 and elevate or lower the housing according to the direction of rotation. I
As shown, the forward end portion of the base 10 terminatesy a predetermined distance from the forward end portion of the body 11 so that an opening 55 is provided between the end of the base 10 and a shoe 27, through which opening project the cutting or planing elements to be presently described.
This shoe 27 is capable of vertical adjustment andthis is accomplished by providing as an integral part of the shoe a'stud 28 which extends upwardly through a boss 29 formed at the fo-rwardend portion of the `body 11. lhreadedV upon this stud 28 is 'an adjustment cap30 which bears upon the boss 29 whereby upon rotation of the cap 30 the shoe will be moved upwardly or downwardly. Surrounding the stud-28 is a spring 3l which spring provides a yieldable connection between the ,shoe and the body 11 whereby when manual pressure is applied to the body 11 ina manner to be presently described thefplaning elements may be brought into closer` contact with the work. This manual pressure may be applied by placing one hand at the for- 10oV Y ward end of the body ll as on top of motor housing 17, while guiding and operating the movement of the plane by the other hand by grasping the handle 32 which is secured to the rear portion of the body ll by suitable screws 33, handle 32 carrying the switch 23 which includes a suitable switch lever 34 whereby to provide expeditious operation of the switch. The motor and cutter may likewise be forced downwardly toward the work, againstthe action of spring 3l, by screwing down the cap 30, or by tilting the body ll downwardly by pressure on handle 32.
So as to limit the adjustment movement of; the cap 30 for adjusting the shoe 27 there 1s provided by the cap a stop finger 35 which is adapted to engage a pin 3G. This will prevent the cap 30 from becoming completely detached from the stud 2S.
The motor 17 is of the brush driven type, said brushes being` diagrammatically illustrated at 5T and mounted on the shaft 20 of this motor is a suitable fau 37 which is rotatable with the armature 18 whereby to introduce air over the armature through the housing of the motor and out through suitable openings 3S provided for the purpose. This will also permit the blowing out of any `line shavings or dust that might find. entrance into the motor.
The planing elements include an arm. 39 which is secured to the outer end of the shaft 2O by means of a sleeve 40 connected to the shaft 2O in any suitable manner and threaded into the arm 39 as at 4l. This' arm 39 at its outer ends, as best shown in Fig. 4, carries the planing elements 42 which include the blade like edges 43 and tapered shank Aportions 44 which are removably wedged in similarly shaped sockets 45 provided in the arm 39, there being provided on these shanks ribs 46 which are positioned in clove-tailed grooves 4'? formed in the sockets 45.
A guiding bar is indi ated at 48 and this guiding bar is hingedly supported from the base ldas at 4f). Pivotally connected to this bar 4S as at 50 are adjustment links 5l` slotted as at 52 through which projects a connecting nut bearing bolt 53 supported by lateral ears 54 provided by thev base.
From the description herein it will be seen that l provide a plane which includes vertically rotatable planing elemeuts operable by a vertically disposed operated shaft. driven bj a motor of electrical type confined within av housing and provided for vertical adjustment whereby the cutting blades may be readily adjusted toward the work to produce the desired result. This is of importance in one respect in that it enables the opera-torto adjust the blades so as to shave or plane a very thin strip from the work operated upon. The adjustment of the shoe permits the blades to be properly disposed in operative engagement with the work whereby to assure a smooth linish in coutradistinction to a rough finish should the blades be adjusted too close to the work. In addition to this the parts are such that they may be readily assembled or dissembled for any reason.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my inventioninto effect, this is capable of variation and modification, without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what l claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
l. ln a power driven plane, a. base plate, a body upon said plate providing a sleeve, a motor including a casing confined vertically within the sleeve, means providing vertical adjustment of said casing within the sleeve, a shoe yieldably supported by said body at the forward end thereof, and planing elements rotatably operable by said motor between the shoe and the forward end of the base plate in substantially a horizontal plane.
2. In a power driven plane, a base plate, a body upon said plate providing a sleeve, a motor including a casing confined vertically within the sleeve, meansproviding vertical adjustment of said casing within the sleeve, a shoe at the forward end of the body, planing elements rotatably operable by said motor between the shoe and the forward end of the base plate in a substantially horizontal plane, and means providing yieldably supporting connection between the shoe and the body.
3. Tn a power driven plane, a base plate, a body upon said plate providing a sleeve. a motor including a casing confined vertically within the sleeve, means providing vertical adjustment of said casing within the sleeve, a shoe at the forward end of thebody, planing elements rotatably operable by said motor between the shoe and the forward end of the base plate in substantially a horizontal plane, and means providing yieldably support-ing and adjustable connection between the shoe and the body.
4. In a power driven plane, a base plate, a body upon said. plate providing a sleeve, a motor including a casing confined vertically within the sleeve, means providing vertical adjustment of said casing within the sleeve, a shoe at the forward endA of the body, planing elements operable by said motor between the shoe and the forward end of the base plate in substantially a horizontal plane, said first mentioned means including a cam edge provided by the casing, and a pin member provided by the body for engagement with said edge.

body upon said plate including a vertically extending sleeve, a motor vertically supported within the sleeve, means providing connection between the sleeve and the casing ofy the motor, a shoe at the forward end of said body, means providing yieldable supporting connection between said shoe and said body, an arm carried by the shaft of said motor and extending substantially transversely of the shaft, planing elements carried by said arm and rotatably operable by said motor between said shoe and the forward end of said base plate, and means providing connection between the planing elements and said arm.
6. In a motor driven plane, a base plate, a body upon said plate including a vertically extending sleeve, a motor vertically supported within the sleeve, means providing connection betwee-n `the sleeve and the casing of the motor, an arm carried by the shaft of said motor and extending substantially transversely of the shaft, means yieldably supported by and connected to said body at one end thereof, planing elements rotatably operable between the forward end of said base plate and said second named means, and means providing connection between the planing elements and said arm whereby pressure may be exerted upon said body during the operation of said planing elements to yieldably engage said elements with the work.
7. In an electrically driven plane, a base plate, a body providing a sleeve upon said plate, a shoe, means providing yieldably supporting and adjustable connection between said shoe and said body, afmotor including a casing mounted in said sleeve, means foi1 effectuating connection between the sleeve and the motor, means for effectuating adjust ment of the motor within said sleeve by rotation of said motor, planing elements carried by the shaft of said motor and rotatable between the forward end of said base plate and said shoe, means providing connection between the planing elements and the shaft of said motor, and fan means operable within the casing by said motor.
