Be it known that I, ARCHIE E. PARNALL, a citizen of the United States, and'a resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVorm-Wheel Cutters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same,"reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon,'which form a part of this specification.
This invention pertains to a worm wheel mit the same to cut the, blank to form a worm wheel.
It is an object of this invention to provide a mechanism wherein ablank and cut ter, rotated by a common driving means, permits said cutter to cut the blank to form a worm wheel.
Another object of this invention is the construction of a worm wheel cutting mechanism wherein a rotatably mounted blank is adapted to be manually moved into engagement with a worm cutter forming a part of a driving shaft which also rotates said blank. I
It is furthermore an object of this invention to provide a driving shaft having a driving and a cutting means forming a part thereof and adapted to rotate a gear and a blank mounted upon a casing'attached to a pivotally mounted handle member, to permit said blank to be cut by said cutting means when said casing is moved toward said cutting means by means of said handle.
It is an important object of this inven-.
tion to construct a worm wheel cutter mechanism simple and inexpensive of constructionv wherein a' shaft is adapted to, both drive and out a blank mounted upon a pivot support adapted. to be manually moved toward said shaft.
Other and further important objects of this invention will be apparent from the disclosures in the drawings and specification,

As shown on the'drawingsz The reference numeral 1, indicates a base plate or a foundation, having an extension 2, formed at one end thereof on the end of which is pivotally mounted by any suitable means a clutch control lever, 3. Rigidly mounted upon the base plate 1, near'one end thereof is a support or standard 4, having formed on the upperendthereofa bearing sleeve 5, disposed longitudinally with respect to said base plate. Also rigidly secured or integrallyiformed on said base I plate near the rear thereof and ashort distance from the right hand end ofthe base plate is a secondsupport or standard 6, on
the upper end of which is integrally formed a second bearing sleeve 7 whichis axially alined with the first bearing sleeve 5.
'Journaled' in the bearing sleeve 5, and projecting therethrough is one end of a driving shaft on which is rotatably mounted to the outside of the sleeve 5, av pulley or driving wheel 8, adapted to be rotated by means of a belt (not shown) connected with any suitable source of power. Rigidly mounte'don the driving shaft to the outside ofthe driving wheel 8, is a clutch 9, of any suitable type and adapted to beactuated by means of the clutch lever 3, to engage the driving wheel 8, to permit said driving shaft to be driven thereby when desired. The driving shaft also projects through and extends beyond the bearing sleeve 7, to within a very short distance from the right hand 7 end of the base plate 1. and has integrally formed thereon between the sleeves 5 and 7 a master worm '10, while'the endof the driving shaft extending beyond the outer end of the bearing sleeve 7, isshaped to provide acutter 11. o Formed or rigidly secured upon the up-.
per surface of the base plate 1, to the front of the standard 6, is an arc-shaped friction strip or curved ridge 12. Integrally formed centrally on the top of the base plate 1, is a boss 13, on which is pivotally mounted a flat handle 14, by means of a pintle oibolt 15, which projects vertically up through the base plate 1, the boss 13, and upwardly through the inner end of the flat handle 14. Rotatably mounted upon the upper end of the pintle bolt 15, with its lower end bearing-upon the upper surface of the handle 14;, is a sleeve or collar 16, having integrally formed near the lower end thereof a gear 17, which meshes with an intermediate gear 18, rotatably mounted upon the handle 14, by means of a suitable screw bolt 19. Projecting upwardly through the handle 1 1-, a short distance from the inner end of the handle is a vertical pintle or bolt 20, the head of which seats in said handle. Rotatably mounted on said pintle bolt 26, with the lower end resting upon the handle 14, is a sleei e or collar 21, having integrally formed at right angles thereto a. gear 22, which meshes with the intermediate gear 18, as clearly shown in Fig. 4.
Mounted upon the inner end of the handle 1 1, is a cover or casing 23, having apertures in the top thereof, to permit the sleeves 16 and 21, and the threaded end of the bolt 19, to project therethrough, so that the cover 23, may inclose the gears 17, 18 and 22. Said cover 23, is removably held in position seated upon the handle 1 1, by means of a nut 24, threaded upon the upper end of the bolt 19.
The upper end of the sleeve 16, is reduced in diameter and has keyed or otherwise rigidly secured. thereon a horizontal master gear 25, which meshes with the master worm 10, and.- is held seated in position by a washer 26, and a. nut 27, engaged'on the upper threaded end: of the vertical. pintle bolt 15. The upper end of the sleeve 21, is also reduced in diameter to permit a metal blank or form 28, to be removably seated thereon to rotate with said sleeve. To prevent said blank 28, from moving upwardly, a tube washer 29, is engaged onthe pintle bolt 20, and rests upon said blank. Removably threaded upon the upper threaded end of the pintle bolt 20, is a finger nut 30, which engages the. upper end of the sleeve washer thus affording a means for removably holding the metal blank 28, in position. Securely mounted or integrally formed upon the base plate 1, and near the right hand edge thereof is a vertical projection or arm 81, disposed to the rear of the handle 14, and adjustably threaded horizontally through a suitable threaded aperture in said projection 31, is an adjustable controlling screw 32, provided with lOClI-lllli? 33, to hold saidscrew locked in an adjusted position with one end thereof positioned to abut the handle 1%, to limit the rearward movement thereof.

The operation of the device is very simple, and when it is desired to cut a worm wheel, a blank28, of the desired diameter and thickness is seated upon the reduced upper end of the sleeve 21, and the washer sleeve.

Of course, during the abovestarting oper ations the handle 1 1, and the gear mechanisms mounted thereon are in a position wherein the handle 1' 1, rests upon the front end of the curved friction ridge 12. By gradually pushing the handle 14:, toward the adjusting screw 32, the master gear 25, which is in meshing engagement with the driving worm 10, is thus rotated, thereby rotating the gear 17, the intermediate gear 18, and the gear 22, which in turn causes rotation of the blank 28, seated on the sleeve 21. The friction ridge 12, serves to, prevent the handle from being moved too easily, and also acts as a suitable guide upon which the pivoted handle may bear to hold the handle in the same; plane. when operated. With the gradual movement of the handle 14:, inwardly the gear blank 28, is thus slowly fed into engagement with the cutting teeth of the cutter tool 11, which cuts into the blank as the same is rotated thus cutting a worm wheel, the depth of cut depending upon the adjustment of the adjusting screw 32, which limits the inward movement of the handle. After the worm wheel has been cut the handle is moved outwardly away from the cut ter and the clutch 9, is thrown out of engagement with the driving wheel 8, by means of the clutch lever 3.
I am aware that various. details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from'the principles of this invention, and I therefore do, not purpose limiting the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
' 1. A worm wheel cutter comprising a rotatable shaft, a worm and a cutter tool coaxially forming a part thereof and rotatable therewith, a driving wheel on said shaft, a clutch mechanism on said shaft for controlling the operation of said driving wheel and. shaft, a pivoted handle, a gear mechanism mounted thereon adapted to mesh with said worm to be driven thereby, and a blank holder on said handle adapted to be rotated with said gear mechanism and moved toward said cutter tool by said handle to ermit a blank rotatable with said holder to e cut by said cutter tool. to form a worm wheel.
2. In a worm wheel cutting device of the class described, a rotatable shaft, an alined worm and cutter integrally formed thereon, a clutch mechanism controlling the operation of said shaft, a blank holder adapted to be rotated by said worm, and a manually operatable member adapted to be actuated to move a blank rotatable with said blank holder into engagement with said cutter to permit said cutter to out said blank to form a worm Wheel.
3. In a device of the class described, a pivoted handle, gears mounted thereon, a sleeve integral with one of said gears adapted to support a blank, a rotatable worm shaft adapted to rotate said gear mechanisms and said blank when said handle, is moved toward said worm shaft, and a cutter tool forming a part of said worm shaft adapted to engage said rotating blank to cut the same to form a worm wheel.

In a worm wheel cutting device of the class described, a shaft, a worm and cutter integrally formed thereon, means for rotating said shaft, a clutch mechanism for controlling the operation of said means a pivotally mounted handle, gear mechanisms rotatably mounted thereon adapted to be moved into engagement with said worm to be rotated thereby, a gear on said handle forming a part of said gear mechanism adapted for mounting a blank to be out, said gear and blank adapted to be rotated by said gear mechanisms when said handle is moved toward said cutter= to permit the cutter to out said blank to form a worm wheel, and adjustable means for limiting themovement of said handle to determine the depth of cut of said cutter in said blank.
5. In a device of the class described, a pivoted handle, means therebelow for frictionally engaging said handle to control the movement thereof, a rotatable gear on said handle adapted to carrying a blank thereon, a rotatable worm shaft adapted to rotate said gear and said blank when saidhandle is moved toward said worm shaft, a cutter forming part of said worm shaft adapted to engage said rotating blank to cut the same to form a worm wheel, and adjustable means for limiting the inward movement of said handle to control the depth of cut of said cutter.
