WILLIAM ZUGKERMAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BOOK COVER.
Application filed August 4, 1922. Serial "No. 579,713.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVILLIAM ZUGKERMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Book Cover, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to book covers and has for an object to provide a simplified construction which will be extremely easy to apply or remove but which will properly cover the back of the book.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a book cover in which the flaps or folded parts are held in place by certain interlocking features without the use of adhesive or other similar fastening means.
In the accompanying drawing- Figure 1 is a plan view of a cover embodying the invention when the same has been spread.
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1 but showing the parts partially folded with the flaps at one end interlocked as they would appear when fitted over one back of a book.
Referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals, the section 1 indicates the body of the cover which is adapted to fit over the outside face of the two backs of a book and across the back edge of the book, line 2 indicating the point of bending which Would be in the center of the back edge of the book. In order to reinforce the cover and to take care of excessive wear and abuse, tabs 3 and 4 are provided at the center of body 1 which are folded in as shown in Figure 2 and thereby present an extra thickness at the ends of the book on the back edge.
Arranged on the opposite side edges of the body 1 are respective side flaps 5, 6, 7 and 8, flaps 5 and 7 being formed with notches 12 and 12 while the flaps 6 and 8 are formed with similar notches 13 and 13 adapted to register asshown in Figure 2 when the flaps are folded. Extending from each end of the body 1 are end flaps 9 and 9. End flap 9 is provided with laterally extendng tabs 10 and 11 while the end flap 9 is provided with similar tabs 10 and 11.
When the cover is to be applied to a book, said book is placed open on the section 1 and the various side flaps 5, 6, 7 and 8 are folded over as shown in Figure 2. The end flap 9 is then folded over and the interlocking tabs 10 and 11 are inserted into the respective notches 12 and 13 in the flaps 5 and 6. The opposite flaps 7 and 8 are also folded over the other back as shown in Figure 2 and then the flap 9 atthe opposite end is folded over the flaps 7 and 8 and the locking tabs 10 and 11 are inserted through the notches 12 and 13 so that they will be properly interlocked with the flaps 7 and 8. This completes the application of the cover to a book.
It will be noted that there is no adhesive used to hold the cover in place nor any applied fastening means but merely the interlocking of the various parts of the cover itself. It will also be noted that the cover is so constructed that it may be removed, turned over and replaced. Under some circumstances the tabs 8 and 4: may be omitted though ordinarily this extra reinforcement is desirable.
What I claim is 1. A book cover, comprising a body, a centrally arranged tab on each side of said body, a pair of flaps on each side of said body and spaced apart by said tabs, each of said flaps having a notch, and an end flap extending from each end of said body, each of said end flaps having laterally extending tabs adapted to be fitted in said notches for interlocking with the side flaps when the parts are in a folded position.
2. A book cover, comprising a rectangular body provided with a pair of side flaps on each of the side edges, each of the side flaps having a notch extending from the outer edge toward the edge of said body, said side flaps being adapted to be folded over the body when in use, a pair of end flaps extending from the ends of said body, each of said end flaps having a plurality of tabs project- 'ing therefrom, said tabs being adapted to be inserted through the notches in the side flaps so that the tabs may interlock with said side flaps for holding all of the flaps in a folded position and a center flap on each of the side edges of said body between the respective side flaps, said center flaps being short compared with said side flaps and capable of folding over the center of the body to present a reinforced structure at the back of the book when the device is in operation.
