Description
C. A. BALDWIN.
Skirt-Supportersy N0, 151,648, lPatentedjune-Z, 1874.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES A. BALDIVIN, OFNEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN SKIRT-SUPPORTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 51,6118, dated J une 2, 1874; application filed May 2, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that LCHARLEs A. BALDWIN, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Skirt-Supporters, and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon,
different sizes of waists; and the invention con-A sists in a metallic or other spring-band constructed with a slot at each end, by which to attach it to the corset, combined with an eX- pander or hoop of larger circumference than the band, and which extends from one end of the band around to the other, the band and hoop connected by any suitable material.
A, the band, is made, from any suitable elastic metal, to extend about halt' around the body. In each end a longitudinal slot, a., is formed, its rear end opening into a perforation, b, of larger diameter than the width of the slot, as shown in Fig. 5. At the center a slide, B, is placed upon the band, and tted with a hook, e. The expander consists of a hoop, C,
extending from one end ot' the band Varound to the other, the ends of both secured together, the hoop of larger circumference than the band. The band and hoop are secured together at different points, but, preferably, by inclosing both in a fabricated material, forming a kind of skirt, D, filling the space between them. In such construction a portion of the band must be left exposed at the center, as seen in Fig. 2, and within which is the hook-slide B. A button of any suitable character, not larger than the perforation b, is placed upon each side of the corset. Onto these the ends of the band are set, the perforations b passing over the buttons, and thus left free the band will slip back, the shanks of the buttons passing into the slots a. In that position the band will work freely upon the button, yet will be held in position. The hook e is engaged with the lacings in the back 5 or, with asuitable eye set on the corset, the slide will be held, but
will allow the band to work freely. The skirts' are placed over the hoop C, and secured around the waist, in the usual manner, the hoop C, from its connection with the band A, support ing the skirts, and through the corset carrying the weight to the shoulder-straps.
It' desired, to engage the ends of the band, several hooked-shaped notches n are made in one vside of the slot, either of which may be set upon the button according to the size of the waist.
This supporter is applicable to any corset, it only being necessary to apply the buttons to secure it in place.
I claim as my invention- The herein-described skirtsupporter, consisting of the band A, provided with the slots a and the hook e, combined with the hoop C, substantially as set forth.
CHAS. A. BALDWIN.
