`Be it known that .SEXTUs A. EDDiNs, a citizen of'the United States, and a resident of Brockton, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Garters, of which the following description, in, connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing' like parts.

,My present invention relates to garment supports, and more particularly to an improved form of garter.` o

In garment supporting devices, and particularly a garment sup1i orting device such as a garter, considerable difiiculty has been experienced in devising such an article as will not become unclasped without warning, and noarticle of this character of which 1 am aware possesses this desirable feature. My present invention was designed to overcome this particular defect in prior devices and I have so constructed the portion of the device that comes into engagement with the article to be supported as to be incapable of movement in a reverse direction until positively removed by the wearer of the article. This device cannot be accidently loosened or removed under any condition of service to which it may be subjected and as this feature is extremely important, I desire to claim the same broadly. In a garment supporting device, the weakest feature of construction is the looking clip for attaching the supporting device to the garment and l have, in my present invention, devised a non-metallic clasp, positively operating, and which will gripy the finest fabric without injury to the fabric while at the same time holding the fabric, of which the garment is composed, in the desired position. In connection with the clasping device`l I have devised a new form of holding, or button, head which is cheap to manufacture and which, in conjunction with the removable gripping member, firmly clasps the device to the garment to be supported. The clasping device in garters is attached to the usual leg band and I have arranged the movab'le looking member of the clasp so as to act as a looking device to p'revent accidental separation of one end of the leg` strap while the support is in position to support a garment. Other features of construction will appear as the description of the nvention progresses.

Referring to the drawings, 10 designates a plate, preferab-ly of non-metallic material such as, for example, celluloid, and arranged on such plate 10 in vertical alinement with respect. to each other is' a hollow rivet. 11 and a clasping stud or button 12, the .bzutton 12 being located beneath the hollow rivet 11. On the back of the plate 10, or the surface that is next to the skin of the wearer, is placed fabric discs 13 whichco'ver the exposed inner ends of the hollow rivet- 11 and stud or button 12 respectively so that no metal touches the Wearer. On the upper end of the plate 1.0 and on one side thereof is arranged a slot 14 of a width and length 'to receive one end of a strip of elastic web'- bing 15. On the other side of the top end of the plate 10 is arranged a hollow or perforation 16 for a purpose to be hereinafter described.

Slidably mounted on the front face of the plate 10 is a looking plate 17 provided near its top end with an elong'ated slot 18 which fits over the hollow rivet 11, this. rivet retaining the looking plate 17 in position on the plate 10 and limiting its Vertical movement. Near the lower end of the locking plate 17 is provided a substantially triangular perforation 19 which cooperates in the usual manner with the stud or button 12 to clasp a portion of the garment to be supported. 17 and 10 tobe in the position shown in F'ig. 1; that is, in the looking position, the operator may move the plate 17 downward so as to bring the large end of the perforation 19 into association with the stud or button 12 when the lower end of the plate 17 may be lifted up and the plate 17 rotated about the hollow rivet 11 as an aXis, such movement freeing any material that may have been clasped by the Stud or button 12 and the perforation 19.

The end of the elastic webbing 15 remote from the slot 14 is secured in a slot 20 formed in a plate 21 and to this plate 21 is fastened by means of a hollow rivet 22 a looking hook 28 which is adapteol to engage in the slot 16 in the plate 10. This hook 23 is so constructed that, when it is in engagement with the slot 16 and the plate 17 is in its nppermost position with respect to the plate 10, the upper left hand end of such plate 17 prevents the hook 23 from being turned into such a position as to allow such hook 28 to be removed from the slot 16 and it is only when the plate 17 has been moved to its downward position with respect to the plate 10 that enough of the slot 16 will be exposed to allow the hook 23 to be removed therefrom. On the Vstrip of webb-ing 15 is arranged the usual adjusting clasp 21, the details of construction of which need not be described, although it is to be understood that such clasp 2a is, in the present instance, constructed of a non-metallic material such, for example, as celluloid, and this is true also with respect to the plate 21.

It will be obvious from the above that my improved garter construction fulfills all requirements of an article of this Character and the clasping device is of such a construction as to enable material of any thickness, within suitable limits, to be firmly clasped on the stud or button 12 and that, when once the hook 23 is hooked into the slot 16 and the plate 17 moved upward with respect to the plate 10 to clasp material firmly on the stud or button 12, a positive operation on the part of the operator must take place before either the material can be unclasped or the hook 23 removed from the slot 16.

Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new is:

n a garment support, the combination with a body portion having a slot at its upper end, of a button secured to its lower end and extending` outwardly therefrom, a pivot member secured intermediate the cnds of the body portion, a clasping member slidably and rotatably inounted on the pivot member and provided with a perforation cooperating with the button, a leg band secured at one end to the body portion, a looking` plate secured to the other end of said leg band, the upper end of the clasping member cooperating` with the slot in the body portion whereby removal of the lockim;r member from the slot is prevented when the parts are in assembled position.
