FRANCISCO, F LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-HALF T0 SIMON E. DAVIS, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA FASTENING Looi1 non Burrons on THE LiKE Application filed September 23, 1929.
lThis invention relates to an improved button fastener, and has for one of its principal objects the provision of a newly perfected fastening loop to be used in co-operation with a button in the fastening of overalls and'similar garments.
One of ythe important objects of this invention is the provision of a fastening loop for connecting supporting straps of work 1o garments and the like to supporting buttons which will not be subject to the present disadvantages of such loops which are easily bent in laundering and ywhich when not held fairly taut, are apt to slip off the button.
Another and still further important object of the invention is the provision of a garment supporting loop which ordinarily acts in co-operation with a button fastened to the article to be supported or which might act in co-operation with a button maintained in operative conjunction with the loop and adapted to be pushed through a portion of the garment to be supported, and which will be much stronger and less liable to become detached than the devices now in use.
Other and further important objects of the invention will be apparent from the disclosures in the accompanying drawings and following specification.
The invention, in a preferred form, is illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter more fully described.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the 35 proved button fastener of this invention showing the same in operative position.
Figure 2 is a side elevation thereof.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the button-fastening loop.
As shown in the drawings:
The reference numeral 10 indicates a button or the ylike adapted to be attached in the usual manner to a garment or portion of a garment 12 which garment is adapted to be supported in position by means of a strap or the like 14.
The strap 14 is looped preferably for the adjustable mounting of the improved button-fastening loop of this invention, which comprises essentially two arms 16 formed Serial No. 394,543.
of a single piece of metal wire with the arms bent into the shape of a V as best shown in Figure 1.
At about the middle portion of each arm is an integral hump or upraised portion 18 which is adapted to be fitted behind the upper end of the button 10 when the device is in garment-supporting position.
The provision of the hump 18 prevents slippage of the button from the V-shaped loop and also acts as a guard against the button catching upon exterior objects. The ordinary loops now in use must be made of spring wire as their grip upon the button depends upon 'this spring action. In this invention, the wire need not be tempered or of spring material, as the button is maintained against the humps or upraised portions 18 without spring pressure, and therefore the loop itself may be made of harder and stiffer wire, which is more resistant to distortion in laundering or the like.
At the uppei' ends of the arms 16 the loop itself is bent integrally outward as shown at 20 and thence upward at at 22, and finally inwardly as at 24, where the ends of the two arms are joined and welded at the point 26. This welded construction is new, as ordinarily the ends of the wire are simply free, and accordingly liable to spring, and additionally the welded joint provides a unitary device which is therefore rendered further resistant to distortion from any cause.
It will be evident that this fastening loop may be made of any desired size, and that its shape may also be varied considerably to accommodate dierent sizes of buttons and also for use with different kinds of work. Further, the same may be made as economically or in some cases even inoie cheaply than the present-day devices, and when finished constitutes a much better and more satisfactory construction of lasting qualities.
I am aware that many changes may be made and numerous details of construction varied throughout a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted hereon otherwise than as necessitated bythe prior art.
I claim as my invention: e
A button fastener comprising a'V-shaped metal wire loop, and a hump in each arm, the hump being adjacent the ypoint where the periphery of a button will cross said arm when in co-operative relation with the device, and with the upper ends of the arms bent outwardly, thence upwardly and lina1 v ly inwardly to a welded joint.
In testimony whereof I aix my signature.
GEORGE I-I. FRANCISCO.
