Application filed February 17, 1920.
To @ZZ whom t may concern.:
Be it known that l, VILLIAM M. MCFAR- LAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norwich, in the county of Chenango and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trousers Supportersj of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to trousers supporters and more particularly to a device which may be removably attached to opposite sides of the waist band of the trousers whereby the trousers will be tightly held around the waist of the wearer so that an ordinary belt will be unnecessary and the trousers will be properly supported.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide an elastic strip having clip members at its ends which may be secured to portions of the waist band of the trousers so that the waist band may be tightened as desired and the desired tension may be maintained around the waist of the wearer.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which consists of comparatively few parts and is simple in construction, but durable and well adapted to withstand the rough usage to which devices of this character are ordinarily subjected.
For a full description of the invention and the advantages and merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device showing its use.
Figure 2 is an enlarged elevation of the inner side of the device.
Figure 3 is a section taken on the line 3 3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the modified form of fastening clip.
Figure 5 is a similar view, the clip merely being inverted.
Figure 6 is a vertical sectional view, and
Figure 7 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on line 7-7 of Figure 5.
Referring to .the drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, wherein like numerals of reference indicate like corresponding parts throughout the several views, the band 1 is constructed of any suitable elastic material and Specification of Letters Patent.

serial No. 359,310.
has one end provided with a loop 2. The opposite end is equipped with alloop 3 which is adapted to engage the central bar 1- of a sliding ferrule 5 which is mounted upon the body portion of the band 1. This ferrule comprises a substantially square frame having the parallel portions 6 and the end portions 7. The bar 4t is centrally located in the frame and is integrally connected with the end portion 7 so that it is disposed midway between the portion 6. The body portions of the band is passed under the portions 6 and over the main or central bar l and one of the loops 3 is connected to the bar as shown. This will permit extension of the band for any desired length in order that 4the adjustment desired may be obtained. The loop 2 is connected to a clip S and the loop 9 formed by the doubling of the band 1 is connected to a clip 10. These clips 3 and 10 are identical in formation and consequent-ly a description of one will suffice. y
These clips may be either made in one piece as illustrated in Figures t to 7 or in two pieces as indicated in Figures 2 and 3. llhen in two pieces, the clips include the outer shell or protecting plate 11, as illustrated so as to be approximately triangular, and provided upon its inner face with a marginal Hang/e 12, carrying at its terminal the integrally formed collar portion or flange 12. This plate 11 is usually provided with brass or nickel finish and any suitable4 and appropriate design may be stamped or otherwise impressed upon the face of the device so as to give it a pleasing effect and render the device attractive. Attached to the plate by means of collars 12 and spaced from the inner face of the plate so as to provide room for the end of the button engaged therebetween is the fastener 13 formed of a wire strip bent to provide spaced arms 14k extending in a loop from the transverse straight bar 15 to which is attached the looped end of the elastic band 1. The arms 14 are bulged outwardly in opposite directions as indicated at 16 and 17 respectively, to accommodate a button such as 19 sewed or otherwise affixed to the trousers for the purpose of engagement with the clips 8 and 10, which button is drawn into the restricted portion 18 so as to be firmly gripped by the clip member of the elastic band while the latter is being adjusted to tighten the trousers.
In its more simple and economical application, the invention is modified vto the eX- tent of dispensing with the wire fastener altogether and utilizing the shell ll as the fastening means. This is done by providing the plate with a slotted portion 20 through which the loops ot the band 2 may be attached and by providing inwardly directed flanges 2l and 22 respectively, having the folded edge 23 and extending over and above the innerI tace of the plate in spa-ced relation thereto. At their outermost extremities the flanges 2i and 22 are appreciably spaced from each other and from the inner face of the plate so that the trousers button 19 is readily accommodated between the flanges themselves and also between the face of the plate ll and the under head oi the flanges. Each plate has its nose portion 24 curved inwardly to substantially conform to the curvature of the trousers waist and thus permit the clip to adhere closely to the trousers waist, the flanges 2l and 22 of the clip converging -inwardly toward each other and downwardly toward the face oi the plate as illustrated in Figure 7 of the drawings, for the purpose of restricting the passage o'f such button 19 and for permitting it to become wedged to the clip as it is forced toward the nose portion of the clip. T he terminal flange portions 25 are `llattened against the nose 24- and the inner fold 23 terminates adjacent the flange portions 25 as indicated by the dotted lines of Figure fl.
ln applying the invention, a supporter is attach'ed tov a trousers as shown in Figure l of the drawings on each side, being secured to the buttons 19. By adjusting the elastic band so as 'to draw the clips closer together, that portion of the trousers to which the buttons are attached will also be drawn toward each other, so that the waist 'band of the trousers is made to fit snugly Vand comfortably about the person as etlietc., as may prove expedient and fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus fully described'my invention, what l claim as Vnew and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A'fastening device for adjustable garment supporters comprising a `flat, substantially triangular' plate, 4the sides of said plate being bent inwardly and their edges rolled upon themselves to provide button engaging flanges spaced from each other and from the inner side of the plate, said plate having a closed flat apex at the meeting edges of the flanges, the opposite open end of the plate being adapted to Areceive various sized butt-ons and converging from end to 'end to provide a wedgeshaped slot for the engaged button.
ln testimony whereof I affix my signature lVitnesses WM. H. DEWITT, ALBERT B. BORLAND.
