To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, lVILLIAM J. Lnvnr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Schenectady, in the county of Schenectady and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trousers Supporters, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to improvements in trousers supporters.

The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of trousers supporters andto provide a simple, practical and eiticient device oflight, strong and durable construction adapted to be simply and effectively attached to theshirt and then connected to the trousers by slipping buttons of the trousers into slots in the device whereby the shirt will be held down and the trousers supported in proper position without constricting the waist with a belt and also without the use of suspenders.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character adapted to be engaged with and remain on a shirt until the same is sent to the laundry and capable of enabling the trousers .to be readily applied to it and of effectively preventing the trousers from becoming accidentally disconnected from it while in use.

With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully. described, lllustrated 1n the accompanying drawings and pointed out I in the claims hereto appended, it being connected with the device attached to the shirt.

Referring to the drawing in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the in vention, 1 designatesa plate designed to be constructed of aluminum or other suitable material either metal, fiber, celluloid or the like and designed also to be slightly curved to conform to the configuration of the body of the wearer and connected detachably by means of spaced buttons 2 to the opposite sioes of a pair of trousers 3 at the interior of the same at the waist band as clearly shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 of the drawing and connected also by means herein- The device after the buttons have been adjusted on the trousers as hereinafter fully explained is engaged with the shirt and after the device has been properly adjusted to suit the wearer it is designed to remain attached to the shirt until the garment is laundered.

The plate 1 is oblongand is provided at the upper portion with horizontal longitudinal slots 4 terminating at their outer ends short of the ends of the plate and provided at their inner ends with enlarged entrance portions 50f sufiicient size to permit the buttons 2 to pass readily through the slots for engaging the same with the plate 1. Portions of the slots lying beyond the enlarged inner ends 5 are of a width less than the diameter of the heads of the buttons so that when the latter are engaged with the slots of the plate 1 andthe trousers band is buttoned it will be impossible for the plate 1 to become accidentally disengaged from the buttons. Safety buttons are preferably employed and have the usual metallic shank 6 so that there will beno liability of the plate cutting the shanks of the buttons. If the buttons are properly spaced so that the dis tance between them will not be greater than the distance between the outer ends of the slots 4 the trousers will not bulge when the buttons thereof are engaged with the device attached to the shirt. The heads of the buttons are passed through the enlarged portions of the slots and are moved towards the outer ends of the slots in attaching the band of the trousers to the device which has been previously applied to and is carried during use by the shirt. When the band of the trousers is buttoned it is stretched and will present a smooth appearance and will not be loose or wrinkled between the buttons.

The plate is equipped at its lower portion with a resilient clamping member T constructed of relatively heavy spring wire or similar material and provided at one end with a terminal eye 8 which is linked into a loop 9 formed integral with the plate. The eye 8 is formed by coiling one end of the clamping member T and the loop 9 is formed by spaced openings 10. The portions of the plate between the openings 10 is bent or bowed outwardly and the eye 8 is engaged with the same as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings. The other end of the resilient clamping member free and is engaged with a keeper 11 consisting of a tongue formed integral with the plate 1 the opposite side of the center from that at which the loop is located and the said tongue dependsfrom the upper portion of an opening 12 and is bent outwardly with respect to the plate 1 at the top to offset the said tongue from the plane of the plate. This will enable the free end of the clamping member 7 to be readily engaged with and disengaged from the tongue.

The clamping member is also provided with an intermediate engaging portion consisting of an inverted hook shaped loop 13 formed by bending the clamping member into an approximately U-shaped loop and then curving or bending each side of the loop into approximately U-form to provide an inverted hook as clearly shown in Fig. i of the drawing for engaging a portion of the shirt to connect the device therewith so that the weight of the trousers will be supported by the shirt and the shirt maintained in proper position by the weight of the trousers. This will distribute the strain incident to holding up the trousers over the entire body of the shirt and will obviate the necessity of a belt and also the inconvenience and injury often resulting from the use of a tight belt or tight suspenders.

The plate is provided at the central portion with upper and lower apertures 14: and 15. The upper aperture is formed of an opening located between the enlarged inner ends 5 of the slot at and the lower aperture 15 consists of a relatively narrow longitudinal slot. In applying a device a portion of the shirt is pulled through the lower aperture 15 and directed or folded upwardly and then passed through the upper aperture 1-1: and is engaged by the intern'iediate clamping portion of the clamping member at the lower edge of the upper aperture clearly shown in Figs. 2 and s of the draw ing. After the intermediate engaging portion 13 of the clamping member is engaged with the shirt. the free end of the clamping member is then engaged under the keeper formed by the depending tongue 11. A sufticient amount of the fabric of the shirt is engaged with the plate 1 at the apertures 1% and 15 to prevent the garment from being torn or worn through its engagement with the plate by the clamping member. .Utcr adjustment of the device to the garment has been properly made to suit the wearer the latter will become normal with the position of the device on the shirt and when transferring the device from a soiled sh rt to a clean one the wearer will have become normal with the position of the device on the. shirt and will be able to apply it to the shirt accurately without the measurement and adjustment originally required in lirst applying the device to a shirt. is the. device is exceedingly inexpensive in construction a Separate set may be conveniently employed for each of several shirts in use so that in changing from a work shirt to a dress shirt or to any other type of shirt it will not be necessary to change the device from one shirt to another if each of the shirts equipped with a pair of the devices.

hen the plate is constructed of fabric or other material, which may not have satlicient strength to enable the loop and the keeper to be formed integral with the plate a rivet may be employed for securing the eye of the clamping member to such plate and the keeper may be formed by a separate piece of material suitably secured to the plate at an aperture similar to the aperture 12. A metal keeper of this character may be readily riveted to a fiber or other plate where itis desirable to employ a metal portion to engage with the free end of the clamping member.

lVhat is claimed is:

1. A trousers supporter comprising a plate provided at the upper portion with spaced longitudinal slots having enlarged inner portions for the passage of a button and being of a width less than the diameter of the heads of the buttons beyond the enlarged portions, the plate having apertures located between the said slots and adapted to have a portion of a shirt passed through them, and a resilient clamping member carried on one side of the plate for engaging the shirt at the said apertures to clamp the shirt in said apertures and thereby secure the device to the shirt.

2. A trousers supporter comprising a plate adapted to be secured to the waist line of a pair of trousers and being relatively narrow with respect to its length so to be worn by the wearer above the hips. the plate having spaced apertures adapted to have a portion of a shirt passed through them and thereby wrapped around a portion of the plate, and a clamping member having a portion projecting through one of said apertures for securing the device to the shirt.

3. A trousers supporter comprising: a plate having an upper opening and a lower slot and adapted to have a portion of a shirt pass through the slot and the opening, and a clamping member mounted on the plate and having a portion extending through said opening for clamping the shirt at the said opening to secure the device to the shirt.

4. A trousers supporter comprising a plate provided intermediate of its ends with upper and lower apertures and adapted to have a portion of a shirt passed through them, said plate being provided at one side of the apertures with a keeper and a clamping member connected to the plate at the opposite side of the apertures and engaged with the keeper at one terminal portion, and ahook carried by the clamping member extending through one of the apertures for engaging the shirt at the apertures to secure the device to the shirt.

5'. A trousers suppoiter comprising a plate provided intermediate of its ends with upper and lower apertures and adapted to have a portion of a shirt passed through them, said plate being provided at one side of the apertures with a keeper and a clamp,- ing member connected to the plate at the opposite side of the apertures and engaged with the keeper at one terminal portion and provided with an intermediate engaging portion consisting of a loop bent to form an inverted hook to extend through one of the apertures to engage the shirt at the apertures and thereby secure the device to the shirt.

6. A-trousers supporter comprising a plate provided with an aperture and having an integral loop at one side of the aperture and provided at the opposite side thereof with a depending tongue forming an inverted keeper and a resilient clamping member provided at one end with an eye linked intothe said loop, the other end of the clamping member being detachably engaged with the keeper, said clamping member being also provided with an intermediate portion arranged to extend through said aperture and engage and clamp a shirt at the said aperture to secure the device to the shirt.
