PATENT; OFFICE.
. JULIUS JONAS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
GARMENT-3U PPO RTING CORS ET ATTACHM ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 739,603, dated September 22, 1903. Application filed December 24, 1902- Serial No. 136,447. (No model.) I
To aZZ whom; it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JU IUS JoNAs, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Supporting Corset Attachments, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in corset attachments for holding skirts and waists in position. In wearing the dip skirt and waist now in vogue it is found necessary to provide some means for holding the fronts of the skirt and waist down. Heretofore hooks have been sewed to the corsetfront and the bands of the skirt and waist in-. sorted under this hook. This is found disadvantageous, becanse the hook would readily become displaced and would occupy too much space. Accordingly I have devised an attachment which is adapted to be attached to the corset and which is not liable to become displaced and which also strengthens thev corset-steel at about the waist-line, where the front steel is subjected to the greatest strain.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 shows the blank from which my attachment is formed. Fig. 2 shows a front view of the- Fig. 1 shows the blank having a body 1,
the tongue 2, the slot 3, and the holes 4. The tongue is bent over upon itself, so as to be parallel, or substantially so, with the body 1, and the body is bent longitudinally of the slot 3, as shown inFigs. 2 and 3, so as to form a U-shaped portion. The attachment is applied to the corset by slipping it over one of the hooks a on the front or, if placed between the hooks, by sewing or otherwise securing it through the holes 4, with the hook 2 projecting downward. The body portion may be of spring material and clasps the corset closely, forming a reinforce, which prevents breakage of the corset-steel at the place where the greatest strain comes when in use.
It is obvious that under some circumstances a corset clasp does not come at the waist-line,
designed to reduce this percentage.
where'the skirt and waist are to be secured, and in this case it is necessary to place the attachment between two clasps and attach it by stitches through the holes 4. W'hen it is placed over the clasp, it is unnecessary to use stitches, the resiliency of the material being generally sufficient to hold it i n position.
Figs. 5, 6, 7, and 9 show an attachment having two hooks instead of one, so that more garments may be supported without making the attachment occupy too much space. Fig. 6 shows the hooks in alinement-that is, one
under the otherbut it is preferable to place them out of alinernent, as in Fig. 9, so as to permit easy adjustment and positioning of the garments. The parts are otherwise the same as in the other figures.
By my invention it will be seen that I have provided an improved means for holding garmentsin posit-ion, and at the same time I have provided means for reinforcing the corsetsteel at the place where the hardest strain comes when in use. very large percentage of breakages in corsets happens at the front, and my invention is The di- It is well known that a mensions and proportions may vary in practice, and I do not wish to be limited to the proportions shown in the drawings, as my invention residesin the combination, witha reinforcing device, of means for retaining gar ments-such as skirts, waists, &c.-in position.
Having thus described my invention, I declare that what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A'corsetsteel-reinforcing attachment comprising an elongated U-shaped body portion having a slot located at the bend and longitudinally thereof, said U-shaped body adapted to closely embrace the corset-steel, and a projecting integral hook located on one face of the body portion and projecting in a direction substantially parallel to the slot at the body portion, substantially as described. 2. A corset-reinforcing device, comprising an elongated U-shaped body portion having a slot located at the bend and longitudinally thereof, and adapted to engage the clasp of a corset, two hooks projecting from one face of the body portion in a direction, substantially parallel to the slot atthe bend, one of said hooks being located above and at one side of the other, substantially as described.
3. A garment-holder comprising two connected parallel jaws provided at one edge with an opening, and a tongue secured to the end of oneof said jaws and curved upon itself to lie substantially parallel therewith.
4. A garment-holder comprising two connected parallel jaws provided in one edge with an opening, and a tongue extending from the end of one ofsaid jaws, and formed integral therewith, said tongue being curved upon itself to lie substantially parallel with said jaw.
5. A garment-holder comprising a plate of metal bent upon itself to provide two spaced parallel jaws, and having in its bent edge an opening, and a tongue secured to the end of one of said jaws and curved upon itself to lie substantially parallel therewith.
6. A garment-holder formed from a single piece of metal and comprising a plate bent upon itself to provide two spaced parallel JULIUS JONAS.
