CLASP 0R BUCKLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 8, 1910.
Application filed January 3, 1910. Serial No. 536,210.
To all whom it may concem:
Be it known that we, DANIEL Kors, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan, in the city, county, and State of New York, and JOHN J. BUCHANAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Clasps or Buckles, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to a clasp or buckle of metal for connecting together the adj acent parts, edges or ends of outer and undergarments and corsets and particularly the ends of strap members of cloth or webbing such as the tension members of corsets. and hose supporters, with the object of providing members that are readily connected both 'with the fabric to which they are secured and with one another and that cannot accidentally become disconnected,-besides members which are simple in construction, easily made and strong.
In carrying out our invention we provide parts stamped up out of sheet material; one of these is an attachable hook plate with a slot for connecting the same to fabric or webbing. This plate has an off-set part forming a back recess, clips cut from the sheet material and side lugs forming guides, and associated therewith is a clip plate preferably of spring sheet metal having an enlarged arched or convexed part for fingerpressure and a reversely bent tongue end which fits said recess and is held in place by the clips; the free end of the tongue coming between the guide lugs and within the free end of the hook and bearing thereon. With this part and complementary thereto we employ a slotted eye-bar plate adapted to engage the hook of the other member.
In the drawing, Figure 1 represents the respective parts of our invention as stamped up out of sheet material, preferably sheet metal. Fig. 2 represents the several finished un-assembled'parts by plan views. Fig. 3 is a plan, Fig. 4; a cross section at 00, w, and Fig. 5 a longitudinal section of the parts comprising our invention as secured to material or webbing and as connected together.
The attachable slotted hook plate with the holding spring clip plate comprises a plate a broadened at one end and provided with an attaching slot 2 to receive and be secured to fabric or webbing, a hook a at onefree end of the plate, an ofi-set portion a in the back forming a recess, lugs 3 forming guides bent up from the opposite edges of a portion of the plate and clips 4 stamped out of a part of the off-set forming the recess.
6 represents a clip plate, 6 a tongue integral therewith and provided with opposite notches with the tongue bent around so as to lie in substantially a parallel plane with the clip plate.
In connecting these parts the tongue 6 of the clip plate Z) is passed from the end of the plate at the slot 2 into the recess or offset portion a beneath the clips 4: which hold the tongue end in position and with the same determine the posit-ion of the clip plate which overlies the surface of the plate a, extends between the guide lugs 3 and with its free end coming underneath the free end of the hook a and in contact therewith. The attachable slotted eye-bar plate as a second member of the clasp or buckle comprises the plate 0 of elongated character through which is made a parallel-sided slot 5, and 0 represents a curved bar at one side of the plate formed in the stamping operation by cutting the eye or slot 6; therefore the eye or slot 6 has one straight edge and one curved edgeg the curved edge providing for a swing function or out of line draft. This eye-bar plate is to be attached to a fabric or webbing either by passing a. part of the same through the slot 5 and returning the same on itself with the parts sewed together, or the slot may be employed for sewing threads in connecting the plate in position to the fabric. Usually however, the fabric or webhing will be passed through the slot.
hen the respective parts of this clasp or buckle are connected the finger is forced against the clip plate to press the free end of the same downward below the free end of the tongue so that the curved bar 0 will be readily disconnected, because solong as the under surface of the hook a remains in contact with the upper surface of the clip plate 5 by the spring action of the clip plate, it will be impossible to accidentally disconnect the eye-bar plate from the hook plate.
From the drawing it will be noticed that the clip plate 7) has a raised or prominently convexed portion and that this convexity is formed both longitudinally and transversely of the said clip plate. In other words the clip plate is purposely arched in this mancurved bar in beneath the hook a her so as to strengthen and stiffen the clip plate at the place upon which the finger presses with force in the operation of our improved clasp or buckle.
The parts may be disconnected by pressing the clip plate down away from the hook toward or against the plate a and the parts may be connected by similar action. The parts however, may be connected by pressing the curved bar 0 against the outer surface of the clip plate I) and forcing the clip plate down simultaneously and drawing the These parts are strong and light, are substantially made and exceedingly efiicient in use.
We claim as our invention:
In a clasp or buckle the combination with an attachable eye-bar plate, of a hook-plate and spring clip plate, means for securely connecting the hook-plate and spring clip plate together and the latter having an integral stamped up portion which is convexed both longitudinally and transversely or arched to stilfen the same to withstand finger pressure in the operation thereof.
